Meet Jose

Postby Margie-Rex's Mom on Thu Jun 17, 2010 5:55 pm

Hi everyone, after two months of living in a house with no canine companion, I couldn't stand it any longer. The end of May I started looking for a new dog. On a whim, I went to the local humane society to see what dogs were available for adoption. I first met a young Rottie puppy who looked so like Rex he made me cry. Not what I needed...and then I met Jose.

Jose is a Chihuahua/terrier mix - we think Jack Russell Terrier because of those ears! But someone thought Corgi...not sure. Anyway - he had just been surrendered by his owner because she said after two years he was completely incapable of being house trained. She had even gone so far as to try to have a vet put him down. I took one look at his face and picked him up. He was scared as he had just been left there a couple of hours prior, but he burrowed his head into my neck. I held him for a bit and then we went outside to play. My heart strings were totally plucked. I submitted an application and after they spoke with my vet, I was allowed to take him home for a "home trial".

What I can say is this dog IS house trained, but you have to pay attention to his signals. They didn't take long for me to figure out, but they are subtle. I also discovered during the next few days that he had been neglected in a variety of areas - most importantly in that he was terrified to drink water from a bowl. When I tried to get him to drink from the water bowl, he got scared and ran away. The only way I could get him to drink was by putting small amounts of water in a measuring cup and holding it while he drank. I talked with the people at the HS and they think since the woman was so upset about the housetraining that she withheld water to keep him from peeing inside.

He was with me for 5 days when I went out and signed the adoption papers. Jose has now been with me for almost 2 weeks. He has some anxiety and separation issues, but we are working on those. And the best thing is he has started drinking from his water bowl! He is the sweetest little lovebug I've ever known. His first evening with me he went to play rehearsal and met everyone. He was so well behaved and really "worked the room". Everyone who meets him, loves him. How can you not? Look at that face!! (I tried to attach a photo here, but they are too big. I have added a photo album for him on my profile, so please take a look!)

I miss Rex every day...but I know that he would have liked Jose. And he would approve of him joining my family. Jose needs someone who he can trust to be there for him for the rest of his life. And I needed a new buddy. Jose is definitely that!

Margie, I am so, so, so, so pleased for you. You really deserve this happiness and it sounds like Jose does too. I'm glad you've found someone new to share your heart. Jose may have had an unlucky start but he's fallen on his feet now.

Good for you.

Thank you Tracy. It was a hard decision, but I knew it was time for me. And when I saw that face and those ears, I melted. He just loves to snuggle...and then has moments of terrier insanity. They last for about 5 minutes and then he is all tired out!

Congratulations Margie!

I am so happy you've found Jose. He is absolutely adorable.
He's probably received more love in the weeks you've had him than he ever had in his previous life.
This is so great...I am very happy for you both!

Margie, this is such wonderful news! Jose was meant for you, and you for him. He is absolutely darling! I can imagine him snuggling into your neck. He finally found his safe harbour.

I love his ears, and he has the sweetest eyes ever. Big hugs to you both! xo

Thank you all so much! While I know I am rescuing him, he is filling that part of my soul that was so sad after losing Rex. Jose makes me laugh a dozen times a day. And on his first evening with me, he curled up in my lap and sighed that deep contented sigh. I knew it was meant to be.

I had planned to try to change his name, because it is so cliched to have a Chihuahua named Jose. But he knows his name and it does suit him. So...he will stay Jose.

Margie - As I wrote to you earlier "Luck and Love has smiled on you both". It is so heartwarming to hear of the love that one can give to an animal.......they fill every hole that is in our hearts and souls. As far as name change, both of my dogs have multiple nicknames (Sadie is Mama Hound and Sweet Chop; Hugo is Houdini, Handsome, Weasel, Wiley), as does our cat "Goofy" (Panda bear), and they answer to all. What is really amazing that each knows which one you are talking to even using the nickname. Wonderful days ahead!
Stay in touch! Kris
