Hi everyone, after two months of living in a house with no canine companion, I couldn't stand it any longer. The end of May I started looking for a new dog. On a whim, I went to the local humane society to see what dogs were available for adoption. I first met a young Rottie puppy who looked so like Rex he made me cry. Not what I needed...and then I met Jose.
Jose is a Chihuahua/terrier mix - we think Jack Russell Terrier because of those ears! But someone thought Corgi...not sure. Anyway - he had just been surrendered by his owner because she said after two years he was completely incapable of being house trained. She had even gone so far as to try to have a vet put him down. I took one look at his face and picked him up. He was scared as he had just been left there a couple of hours prior, but he burrowed his head into my neck. I held him for a bit and then we went outside to play. My heart strings were totally plucked. I submitted an application and after they spoke with my vet, I was allowed to take him home for a "home trial".
What I can say is this dog IS house trained, but you have to pay attention to his signals. They didn't take long for me to figure out, but they are subtle. I also discovered during the next few days that he had been neglected in a variety of areas - most importantly in that he was terrified to drink water from a bowl. When I tried to get him to drink from the water bowl, he got scared and ran away. The only way I could get him to drink was by putting small amounts of water in a measuring cup and holding it while he drank. I talked with the people at the HS and they think since the woman was so upset about the housetraining that she withheld water to keep him from peeing inside.
He was with me for 5 days when I went out and signed the adoption papers. Jose has now been with me for almost 2 weeks. He has some anxiety and separation issues, but we are working on those. And the best thing is he has started drinking from his water bowl! He is the sweetest little lovebug I've ever known. His first evening with me he went to play rehearsal and met everyone. He was so well behaved and really "worked the room". Everyone who meets him, loves him. How can you not? Look at that face!! (I tried to attach a photo here, but they are too big. I have added a photo album for him on my profile, so please take a look!)
I miss Rex every day...but I know that he would have liked Jose. And he would approve of him joining my family. Jose needs someone who he can trust to be there for him for the rest of his life. And I needed a new buddy. Jose is definitely that!
