White Dachshund

Postby lou859 on Tue Jul 13, 2010 1:46 pm

I have a white dachshund that is out of black & tan parents, this is her second time, she has beautiful puppies, both times with 1 white one. what you think??? Funny thing also, is she was born with only big spot on back end and 2 small spots on the back of her neck, but all these other spots plus her black noes has appeared as she has aged.
Interested in any info. & comments.
Thanks

She is cute. The parents must both carry the recessive white gene. I think Lynners might be more up to date on the genetics as it's been a while since I was in school.

She is adorable. My two dogs had a pie ball mother and the father is brown and white. Interesting. Cyndy

I think Kian hit the nail on the head!

Both parents must carry the recessive "piebald" gene.

Interestingly, on a quick google search, white dachsunds can also be produced by breeding two dapple or merle dachsunds. This apparently is called "lethal white" because many of the puppies produced from such a pairing have significant health issues (this one kennel claims to have seen one pup born without eyes completely). It also can lead to blindness and deafness.

Lynners, I have seen a deaf, eyeless white dachshund. It was quite heartbreaking.

Lou859, Your puppies are very sweet! Welcome to the DP.
Do you know the historys of your parent dogs?

There is a dachshund rescue of Texas in the Hill Country. I have also seen deaf/blind white dachshunds on their site. It is very sad. Below is the link if anyone wants to take a look at these precious pups. Cyndy

I do have a pedigree on my Male but not the female, she was suppose to be an AKC registered dog and the owners were very old and didn't like to mess with the papers so just threw them away. I'll have to post some pics of them. Is my understanding correct that the formalities can come from breeding 2 dapples, but not when the gene is just recessive?

The "dapple" or merle gene is dominant (note that it is different from the piebald gene!). Lets call it A. Breeding two dapple parents leads to a a probability of 75% of the offspring to be born with the dominant dapple gene (2 Aa and 1 AA). Those puppies born AA are said to be double dapple, and they are the ones often born with deformities.

This website explains it fairly well: http://www.dachshund.org/article_double_dapple.html#why

Ok, so being this gene is recessive, I'm ok, and if I wanted to, I would be ok in breeding her as long as it was not with a dapple. I'll check out that site, thanks

What is your purpose for breeding your dogs in the first place? You claim that you don't even have papers for your female. My advice is to spay and neuter your dogs and enjoy them as pets.

No no no no no. The piebald and dapple gene are COMPLETELY different. A piebald can be bred to a dapple without problems. Unless you have papers for your dog (and a legitimate pedigree), and until you have a proper understanding of the genetic consequences of breeding your dog (or any dog)...don't breed! The existance of Dachsund rescue should have given you an eye opener that only experienced people should be breeding!

She is very cute but you are playing with fire. Having a cute dog is not a good enough reason to want to breed from her. Shelters and pounds are full of cute dogs. I am not anti breeding but it should be done for the right reasons i.e to further the breed and only then after all necessary research into bloodlines of the prospective PEDIGREE parents, preferably after they have proven themselves in the show ring and with a waiting list of future puppy owners. Would you be prepared to keep all of the puppies that you bring into the world?

I didn't say I was breeding her, Just trying to understand the recessive gene thing and I sure don't want any blind or deaf puppies.

I checked out this site, OMG, so many beautiul dachshunds, how could people abandon them????
But other than 1, blind in one eye, dog, I didn't see any others deformed etc....maybe I'm not looking at the right place.
