Hi! Newbie here.

Postby bubbyamore on Mon Aug 09, 2010 10:30 am

I am new to this site, and I am soo glad I found it! I found it by accident when I google imaged the type of dog we have (I had never heard of the breed before, and was doing information and image searches on it).

We just got a new puppy a little over a week ago. He is a shelter puppy, and is the sweetest most adorable little guy ever! He was surrendered with his 19 siblings and cousins when they were only 4 weeks old. His mom is beagle/treeing walker coonhound. His dad jumped the fence, so we are not sure what else is "in there."

This is mine and my husband's first puppy ever. His childhood dog, they rescued when she was 1 1/2 and was already past the "puppy" stage. My childhood dog, we got when she was 8 weeks old, and had her until she was 15, but I was 9 when we got her, and didnt really have anything to do with the training aspect of her puppyhood. My mom did all her training.
So, this is all new to us.
So far, potty training hasnt gone exactly like I imagined it, but we have only had him for about a week. Every time he goes potty outside, he gets a treat right away. We are crate training him as well, but I just researched "crate training" last night and found out, we have a crate that is too big right now. So, now I am looking for a divider to go in there to make it smaller.
Colby is super smart though. He learns very quickly, and loves to learn. (as long as I have treats in my hand..lol) He learns a new command every couple of days, and 3 times a day I work with him for 10-15 mins on his commands. In just the 1 week he has been here, he already knows sit, lay down, drop it, come (most of the time), crate, and I just started working with him on heel yesterday.
Last night he did start showing his "beagle" side though, and ran from me when I took him out. Up until then, he would stick right by our side when out, but I guess he is feeling more comfortable here!!

Anyway, I am really glad I found this site. I am sure I will be asking a lot of questions and sharing some frustration with you all over the next several months!

P.S- I am going to try to upload a photo of colby and my daughter, but it might not work out...I'm not sure I know what I am doing :D ok...it said the file size is too large :( so I guess I cant share a picture right now.

Hello Bubbyamore. Welcome to the DP. You can use a cardboard box as a divider to make your crate smaller. Either put the whole box in the crate or flatten it and use it as a wall wedged within the crate.

Right after I posted I went to my photobucket account and tried to download the picture there to attach here, but for some reason I couldnt upload the photo to the site:(
Deerie me, that is a GREAT idea!! I hadnt even thought of that and it will probably save me about 15 dollars! The crate only cost me 25, so I dont want to spend too much money. Besides, I know that when the little guy is full grown, this crate will end up being the right size!! LOL

Welcome. You're among friends. This is a great place to exchange information and just have some fun. I look forward to reading some of your comments and posts!

Frustrations are part of the bargain with a new dog...but the love is well worth it. One tip I have is that puppies need to go immediately after they wake up...doesn't matter if it's a 30 minute nap or all night. Grab Colby right away upon waking up and rush...and I mean rush...outside. Have a treat with you and as you set him down, tell him something like "Do your job, Colby" He'll go anyway, but make a big deal out of it...with a treat and a lot of " good dog". He'll soon get the idea that this peeing and pooping outside is pretty cool, when you make a big deal out of it. Gradually back the treats off to every other time and every third time, etc...but still lots of praise.
