a late introduction...

Postby SookDog on Tue Aug 10, 2010 3:51 pm

Since I've already asked for advice from the (very helpful) members of this forum, I thought it would be appropriate to introduce myself and Sookie. Sookie is a year and a half old lab mix (what she's mixed with is anyone's guess, the vet says Aussie because of her stature) who we rescued with the help of a nearby organization when she was 6 months old. She came from a high kill shelter in Georgia where she was picked up as a stray - luckily, the Georgia Puppy Caravan was put together and the entire shelter was empty and all the dogs re-homed. She's a truly fantastic dog, with the sweetest, most loving temperament. She loves other dogs, adores our cat (Lilly is warming up to her), and is so gentle with children. As we live in a city, we love taking her to our local dog park as well as to a state park nearby to do a little hiking. We haven't been able to get her in the water just yet, she doesn't seem to like it, but there's some summer left, so we're hoping she'll go for a swim before 2010 is up!

I haven't been on much lately, so I am glad to welcome you to DP. Sookie is adorable and I'm sure a joy. Hope you enjoy coming around. ( I like the paint color on your walls)

Kian and my 2 Aussies, one Diva named Allie and one pup named Ice.

Better late than never! Sookie is a lucky dog. High kill rates break my heart. I don't want to get on a rant, but our Humane Society here in Hamilton County, Indiana is blessed with hundred of great volunteers that raise a lot of money so that we can keep our friends long enough to re-home them. We only have a 4% euthanasia rate, mostly for dogs too aggressive or sick to make it. Our volunteers pack up our dogs every week to show them at Farmers Markets, Pet stores, shopping centers and other places with big crowds.

Good luck and enjoy the forum.

The high-kill rate shelters are truly heartbreaking; thankfully there are fantastic rescue groups in our area with volunteers who are committed to helping pups like Sookie. The Georgia Puppy Caravan was actually a well-publicized event in the summer of 2009 (the caravan brought Sookie up here) that emptied an entire shelter and saved hundreds of lives, I was just happy to do my part and bring Sookie into our home. She had a rough start in life; she was bred, had her tail docked (that's what leads us to suspect she was bred, the tail docking is a "professional" job), and was dumped only to end up on death row. Giving her a happy and comfortable life seems like the least we can do given all she does for us!

And Linda, Sookie thanks you for complimenting her fur! In person she's almost a reddish color; people have suggested that she's mixed with Chesapeake Bay Retriever because her coloring is much lighter than your average chocolate lab. She kind of looks like a baby deer! We think she's adorable :D

Sookie's coloring does look a lot like a Chesapeake Bay Retriever. She is beautiful!

Do you happen to know which shelter in GA she came from? Of course only share if you're comfortable. The rescue I work with has pulled a few dogs from down that way, too.
