Hi! I'm new...an introduction?

Postby Deltablue on Fri Nov 12, 2010 4:22 pm

Well,
How do I introduce myself? I'm a highschool English teacher, I own a rescued Texas Blue Lacy named Gunner, I have a crazy catahoula foster named Jewel, and we are adopting a Dobe TOMORROW! (I'm really excited, can you tell?)
We work with fosters in an East Texas rescue called Piney Woods Animal Welfare Society.

I'm all about R+ and hate Ceaser Milan. His methods are intimidating and, in the wrong hands, can cause more harm than good. Gunner will have his CGC soon and Gretel (soon to be Delta? we're working on the name) our dobe, will start work on her's the first weekend after Thanksgiving. I do all R+ clicker training!

We feed Blue Buffalo (I want to switch to RAW, but there are a few things still holding me back, freezer space being one, carpet being another...we do treat with raw sometimes). We also have a georgous kitten named Maple who Gunner is still getting used to.

WELL, I think you know everything I do! BOL! I'll figure out how to post pics and you can see the 'kids'.

If you're interested in Jewel, our catahoula/border collie foster, let me know. She can (and frequently does) jump about 6 ft. off the ground and is super fast, I think she would do great in agility if there was somene interestered and willing to work on her manners!

Welcome, welcome, welcome! Your babies are absolutely beautiful and congratulations on the new addition (tomorrow, woo!) - we can't wait to see pictures! I'm Shari and Sookie is my lab/pit/herding dog/heinz 57 mix. I'm actually getting my master's currently with plans of being a high school English teacher! Small world :)

Like Lynners said in the behavior and training forum, you're among friends here in terms of training methods - many of us are big proponents of positive reinforcement and clicker training (that's how I trained Sookie). If you hop over to the health section you'll see a long thread on feeding raw. Many members here are raw feeders, so if you're looking for some help/guidance getting started you'll definitely find that thread useful (Titled: "i met a pig's foot today" )

It's good to meet you, and welcome!

Welcome to the Daily Puppy from Oliver & Henry, and their Mum, in London, Ontario

Your home sounds like a wonderful haven for dogs. Best wishes to you for tomorrow. You must be very excited!

As Shari said, most of us are proponents of positive training methods. I am guessing from Shari's post that you have already posted elsewhere in the threads, but I've not seen them yet. It's lovely to have you join us. :D

Very pretty dogs! Most of us here use positive based rewards and we encourage that. As Shari said check out the Raw feeding section, I feed my a combo of Raw with Kibble and it works good. I am Kian, soon to be the owner of my own boarding kennel and own two Aussies - Allie and Ice.

Congrats on the new one, you must post pics!

Hi Delta Blue, welcome to the DP from the Deerhounds Loki and Idun and their mum in England.

I raw feed. It's easy when you get going. My 18 month old Idun has only ever been raw fed. Find your suppliers before you start so You know that you can sustain the diet and away you go. I feed my pair outside. That way there is no need to worry about your carpets. Don't be tempted to raw feed your kitten. Cats dietary requirements are much more complex than dogs and they don't fair well on an exclusively raw diet. It's something to do with the different Taurine levels.

Welcome to the DP! You have 2 beautiful dogs! I hope Jewel finds a good home. Good for you for fostering her and giving her a good home for now. I love her blue and brown eyes. Can't wait to see pics of the new one too.

Thanks everyone! Its nice to meet you too!

Funny, I've read in cat threads that they should be fed raw (a specific diet of course).

Good news! Jewel found a home yesterday! WOO! She is living with two other dogs, a handful of horses, and lots of space to run and play. I'm happy for her (worried, as all foster moms can be, and only because I didn't do the adoption) I know she is in a great home!

We brought home the newby and named her Paisley. She is everything I wanted in a puppy and I feel like the luckiest girl EVER! Our trainer said she had the perfect attitude for therapy work. I'll post pics asap. But it may be a day or two.

Who lets their dogs free-sleep and who kennels at night?

Paisley! What a sweet name :)

Sookie doesn't sleep in her crate at night anymore, but she used to when we first brought her home. Mainly I don't put her in there anymore because she goes in on her own mostly, so I leave the door open. She's free to come and go as she pleases; most nights she starts in the crate and then wanders into the living room to sleep on the couch (we let her on the furniture). She's crated when we're not home, though.

Congratulations on getting Jewel adopted out! :)

Welcome, from Sniffers and his mom in America's Diaryland! Gunner is a cutie. Hope to see pics of Paisley soon!

Yay for Jewel finding a forever home!

Sniffers is crated at night. Gives us peace of mind that he his safe and can't get into trouble. He loves his crate and goes running to it when we say "crate"! He is also crated when we're gone for a while during the day.
