My Tahsis was always kenneled at night (and during the day while I was away at work) until she was about 7 months old. At that point, I "failed fostering" and ended up adopting her myself. Since then, she has slept in my bedroom, but always on the floor. Just in the last month has she been allowed to sleep ON the bed, but she prefers the floor anyway and after about 10 minutes she goes to her own bed. I'm only allowing her on the bed now because she has an extremely reliable "get off" and "go to your bed".

She is always crated whenever someone is not home to supervise her. She tends to enjoy playing with shoes, socks, slippers, wedding invitations  , etc. :)

BOL Lynners! Haha!

I haven't crated Paisley at night yet because her foster told me that she had been free-sleeping. She did well the first night (locked in our room with us and a dog bed, of course). We never kenneled Gunner, when we brought him home we didn't have a kennel (we found him running around some campgrounds). He proved so reliable in the first week that we just never needed one. I put him in a big one the other day just to see what he would do and he 'looked' at me. I left him for a few minutes and he didn't care one bit... I guess if I ever needed it at least he would use it! haha.

I DID crate her when I left for work this am (left with a nylabone). She whined right off. I just wonder if I should start crating her at night for the simple sake of training. Good question to ask a trainer. I've had so much time with her that she hasn't NEEDED to be kenneled. I usually kennel them right away, but the foster said... ... ...

I know, I know... She is going to have to be kennel trained anyway.

Sigh. BOL.

Welcome from Dusty and Sarah in Lansing, MI. I'm Marianne.

Dusty never "took" to crating and we mainly penned her in a small area of the kitchen at night and when we were gone until she was reliably housebroken. Since that worked for Dusty, we did basically the same with Sarah (who liked the crate somewhat better). Once housebroken, they have free reign of the house and sleep with us at night.

We haven't had any problem with either of them chewing, destroying or getting into stuff. We've been very lucky; may be the breed.

Bailey was crated at night (in our bedroom) up until he was about a year and a half. He has always been very reliable as a puppy in that he was housetrained within a week and only chewed on "his stuff." Despite that we still crated him, as it gave us piece of mind that he was safe, and as was our stuff. When he was crated at night, he had a bedtime routine in that he would get about 15 minutes of cuddle time with us in bed, then lights off and to the crate he went. He never minded it and ever since we let him sleep out of his crate, he still does his 15 minutes cuddle time and then off to sleep in his bed or the floor all on his own.

It was a couple months later that we started gradually letting him out of his crate while we were gone, working up to a full day of work. Again, it was always for our own piece of mind as he has always been reliable. He sleeps all day anyway. I always come home to him fast asleep in our bed. This morning I actually forgot my lunch on my first way out the door. I came back to grab it 2 minutes later and he was already out of sight, and I assume, already tucked in our bed :P

Our foster dogs are crated at night and during the day.

Loki is crated at night after having a run of nights where he wasn't clean. He had never been crate trained because when he was a pup we couldn't find a crate big enough. We used our usual crate training method - place small son in crate with treats to entice dog in. Works a treat! He went in the crate and completely monopolises it now. I get looks from him like he wonders why he didn't have a den before. Idun isn't crated although she is crate trained. We only have room in the kitchen for one huge crate so she sleeps on her bed in the kitchen next to Loki in the crate.

When Loki was a pup he used to sleep on our bed but it got very crowded as he grew and there is one thing deerhounds (or mine at least) don't like and that's being crowded so he took to sleeping on the floor. It made more sense when we got Idun for them both to be together in the kitchen and save upstairs for the cats.

Sorry this turned into an essay.

When I foster, I also always crate at night and during the day. At night to build independance, mostly, since they will eventually be moving on to their forever home and I don't want to create too strong of a bond!

When I had larger dogs (a Golden and a Lab) they slept in a room of their own. In one house we had, it was the Foyer and when we moved, their beds went in the main floor laundry room. Sally could never be fully trusted as she was a bit cheeky but then Labs often are. Emma could be trusted anywhere, anytime.

Now that I have 2 small dogs, Oliver sleeps with my OH and I, and Henry sleeps with my younger son Elliot. Both dogs are crate trained which is useful for travel or if everyone is gone from the house at the same time, or there is an emergency. They usually just come with us.

Congratulations on Jewel finding her forever home, and a big welcome to Paisley.

Btw, what is BOL? I'm old and out of the loop

I was wondering the same thing Deb...maybe we are in our own loop? :P

A new baby!! Paisley is a very cute name! Welcome to the DP! Glad to see you are jumping right in.
I'm Kris, from Nebraska. I have Abbey, Charlie and Izzy (pictured from left to right) and a bunny named Dougie!

Mine are all kenneled trained. Abbey & Charlie always slept in their kennels until Charlie had to wear a cone for several months. He couldn't get into or turn around in the kennel, so that was the end of sleeping in the kennels. They still have thier kennels, but I rarely close the doors. They like to hang out there if I'm on the computer or Charlie goes there when the dreaded camera appears!! Izzy has never liked his kennel. He slept there when he was a baby, but I think by 6-7 months, I gave up and let him sleep with me. I put a baby gate across the bedroom door to contain him.

BOL....best of luck :?: Just a guess.

Mine are all free sleepers when they prove reliable, I prefer to have a dog have free roam of the house at night. However, they are crate trained as well. We travel and take their crates as staying at other homes it becomes courtesy. So yes to your question, crate train. While it may not be needed once they are reliable, the crate may be needed at different times.
We went to our daughters home for a few days and took Allie and her crate, that way she could be in her crate when we were gone and not roaming someone elses house, I felt better that way.

Currently Allie sleeps with us and Ice sleeps on the floor. (right now he is in the crate at night due to other circumstances, but once we get settled again he will graduate....again. )

BTW: Lynners did not fail fostering! Tashis won her ♥. Lynners is great at fostering!

Jose is crated during the day when no one is home. He accepts it, but it isn't something he is thrilled about. However, due to the issues he has from his previous owner, he isn't quite trustworthy yet on his own unattended. However, I am working on leaving him for longer periods of time, each one a bit longer than the other. He has slept with me since I adopted him.

And Deb and Kris...BOL is "burst out laughing"...

I thought BOL was bent over laughing , but I could be wrong.

Welcome to the DP. From Me( kris/kwak) Rocco and Miley (Not a lacy, but thought she might be part Lacy, before dna proved me wrong) Nice to meet someone with a lacy dog.

Miley is crate trained, but after about 7 months she was allowed to sleep in the bed with me and Rocco. But she still goes in her crate on her own to take naps sometimes.
Rocco never really liked the crate and I didn't push the issue so he was only crated at night until about 5 months.

During the day they have the kitchen, hallway and backyard. Miley is still not 100% trustworthy with pillows and such.

Kris, you could be right. I asked one of the girls in the office today what it meant and she told me burst out laughing. Either works, I guess!

Oh I feel like such a mean mommy, keeping Sniffers in a box at night. :( I'm sure he'd sleep fine if he was left to roam the living quarters but knowing him, he'd hear a noise and start barking his head off. I think he feels safe in his crate. I can walk by it in the middle of the night and he won't make a peep. :D

You're not a mean mommy!! Think of it as keeping your little guy safe. If (heaven ever forbid) you had a fire during the night, you know right where he is. A Firefighter friend told me that once, so many animals hide when they are scared.
I know my dogs hide if my alarms go off, so it's part of the reason I keep the baby gate across my door.
