Classic Names for Dogs or something different?

Postby caoimhecool1 on Mon Jan 03, 2011 2:49 pm

We named our dog Olly. Is that a classic name for a dog or different? I like the way people name their dogs after people :D . Our dog is named after Olly Murs the X Factor Finalist. Is your dog named after someone or something?

I know quite a few dogs who are named Oliver and are called Olly/Olli. Our dogs name is Bailey, which is one of the most common dog names but it suits him, and we are happy with it. He is named Bailey after Bailey's Irish Cream, since his coat is a cream color. He is Bailey the Irish cream puppy :)

Some people prefer the common names and some people prefer more unique names. It's all a matter of preference and not one is better than the other. The way I figure, as long as its a name that you are comfortable yelling out in public then its all good ;)

Olly is a very cute puppy. Welcome to the daily puppy.

My dogs are named after Norse Gods.

Loki, the god of Mischief and destruction. It suits him perfectly.

Idun, the goddess of youth and rejuvenation.

I like more unusual names, although Loki isn't uncommon. I have never met another dog called Loki in the flesh but I have come across them on the internet. I have never met another Idun.

My dog is named after the main character in a Japanese anime series, Wolf's Rain. It's about a pack of wolves struggling to survive together in a world that has outlawed wolves. Kiba (my dog's name) is the leader. It means "fang" or "wolf's fang" in Japanese, which is hilariously funny, if you knew my dog.

I too have an Oliver, but he is rarely called Ollie. His nickname is the Schnizzler. It was a name I had liked for years and considered it for one of my two human boys. The child that ended up not being called Oliver is Elliot, so more often than not, I call Oliver when I mean Elliot and vice versa.

Henry's name was chosen after much discussion on here, as well as within the family. My son Elliot came up with Henry and it just seemed to suit him. It had to "match" the sound of Oliver so that as Kristen mentioned, when calling out in public it went well together. He is often called "Hanky Panky" these days as he can be a bit of a devil. :P

I did the same thing with my human children as well. The older one is Benjamin, or Ben which goes well with Elliot, and I think all four of my boys suit their names.

I like the unusual names, they're fun.

We found Milah (pronounced 'Mylah') on the internet, and though its not uncommon or unusual, as I have seen at least 2 other dogs on here with the same name, just spelled differently, its still not something you hear every day.

A friend told me that in spanish, Milah means "Bad girl" lol.. and sometimes that name fits ;) but very seldom

Jose came named...not what I would have called him, but such is the way of rescuing an adult dog.

My Rex was also a rescue and came with that name. Not unique at all. But the dog I had before was Ralphie. My father named him. It was really funny when a friend of his stopped by and I had to scold the dog. The friend's name was Ralph.

Gizzie was originally named Gizmo by the rescue, we shortened it to Gizzie, it seems to suit him better.
Ruby Jean reminded me of a lazy hound dog when we adopted her, so we wanted something southern sounding. We'd already had an Onyx so we stuck with the gem theme for our girls.
And Kessler is named for my OH's favorite whiskey.

Sookie is named after a character on the HBO series "True Blood" (books before they were a TV show, but I've never read them, so alas, her name comes from Anna Paquin's character). Of course, that show "Jersey Shore" came on shortly after and now everyone thinks she's SNooki, so I am correcting them constantly - the tv show is a nice point of reference when I explain the difference  I've never met another Sookie, but I've seen a few listed on PetFinder, so I know they're out there!

Phyrie, I didn't know that about Kiba's name! Very interesting :)

Mine are pretty common.

Rocco is named after Rocco Dispirito. I was trying to think of a good boy name and was watching him on TV and I thought Rocco would be a perfect name for my new puppy.

Miley after I'm sure you can guess is after Miley Cyrus. My nieces were really into Hannah Montana, But I liked the name Miley better.

I generally try to name a dog or cat to suit their personality. My daughter named Prince so I didn't have any choice in his name but a prince, he is not, most of the time anyway. I would have probably named him Stubbornbutt but I nicknamed him "hotrod" which seems to fit his personality.

Coby was originally named "Bingo" That was what the people were calling him when I took him. He never responded to the name and when I was on the DP one day and commented on the name "Coby" which was a cute little pup featured, Coby came running and responded to the name so he became "Coby" which has later become Coby-bear.

Names are really a personal choice even tho I have heard some very vulgar names given to animals. Things that I would not be comfortable calling a dog in public, and I am sure the dogs didn't appreciate it either.

I'm on an old fashioned kick lately. These last 2 are Emily & Abigail.
The first one I named Oye after the commercial for the batteries where the guy said Oye , he was an Aussie & so was she.
The next one I named Matilda after the Australian song Waltzing Matilda
Oh, did I mention ,all my dogs have been Australian shepherds? teehee

I named Dusty before she was even born. I knew I wanted a Shih Tzu and so chose Dusty short for "dust mop" It fit either girl or boy. And it fits her perfectly; she is black with white scattered all through. She looks dusty!

Sarah was chosen by my husband after a dog he had years ago.

Waltzing Matilda is an old Australian folk song. It's sort of the unofficial national anthem of Australia.
Gonna have to check out Rod Stewart tho. It's not coming to mind
