New pics of Abby

Postby abbysmom1 on Fri Jan 14, 2011 11:00 am

I just wanted to post some new pics of Abby. She's growing so fast we can't believe it.
It's been snowing here in Western NY State almost constantly these last 3 days. And both Abby & Emily are loving it. I'm having a hard time keeping them inside.
Yesterday I got them in & went to dry them off only to realize they weren't wet...it had iced over.
I let them "thaw", they slept a bit & went right back out.

Oh the joys of dogs and snow! Does Abby & Emily come in with "snowballs" all over them? Mine sure do! Thanks for sharing the pics, they are beautiful.

Usually Abby has the "snowballs" Her fur is different cuz shes still a puppy. Emily only gets those nasty ice balls under her toes.
Speaking of ice.....I didnt realize that normal table salt could hurt them like the ice melt salt does but it can.
Found out the hard way & now I feel so bad !

Madi, in our Northern climes, a mixture of salt (not the table kind) and sand are put on the roads as salt helps to melt the ice. It also causes tremendous rust on vehicles, and in some areas the ratio of salt to sand is changing, so there is more sand (for traction) and less salt, which damages roads and cars. I dislike the salt on the roads, and I won't use it on my driveway or walkways. It's also harmful for the environment.

Sorry for stealing the thread for a moment....

Abby and Emily do look like they are having fun. If you are in Western New York, I am assuming you aren't too far from me and that you are having the same amounts of snow and cold. I'm in London, Ontario about 3 hours from Buffalo.

At least the dogs (and children) love it!

They are both beautiful! It looks like they are having all kinds of fun romping in the snow!

Deb, they use salt and sand here and it gets really messy, all over the cars - yuck! They started using some kind of spray too that is supposed to be better for the environment. I think they can only use that at certain temperatures though.

The steps out back get quite icy and we won't use Ice melt with the dogs there, so I chip away. There is a Ice Melt that is easier on the enviroment and the lawn that we have used on the driveway. The Ice that is used on the roads is harsh, usually it is mixed with sand.

Allie has a mature coat, she still gets the snow balls in her fur.

Linda, I have heard about the spray, but I think you are entirely correct about the temperatures. I think it's too cold here for it, or too warm...it's one or the other.

Kian, you also mentioned the "stuff" that is not salt but is "ice melter". That too can be harmful to the dogs' paws and I don't use that either. I figure if someone slips and falls coming to my door, they can sue me and we'll split it! :P I'm teasing, of course I don't want that. 8)

Ben shovels our little walkway, and if it's very icy, leaves a layer of snow (not deep) for traction. It's the wooden surfaces that end up being the trickiest.

I use kitty litter on my icy walks and steps for traction. It also works very well if a car is stuck in the ice or mud. I keep a bag in my car at all times, just for that purpose. Also, the kitty litter is gentle on pup's paws, unlike salt.

Abby is adorable as is Emily. They all love the snow!

We use kitty litter too. Its illegal in most parts of our state for them to salt the roads, they only use sand, and most of us just follow suit.
