At the risk of opening a huge can of [ring]worms here, this is my opinion:

Vaccines, for dogs or children, are simply not imperative. Clearly there are some people and animals who have a severe reaction/allergy to vaccines, hence the willingness for Vets and SCHOOLS to provide waivers. There is NO school public school district in this entire country (that is the US for those who are abroad) that can legally ban any child from attending when they are not vaccinated. Schools put up a HUGE fight about this, but it is very clear that Federal Law allows parents to conscientiously object (religious or otherwise) or if the pediatrician notes the severity of the allergy is one that the risk of the actual vaccine far out weighs the benefits (instead of the other way around). The waiver is on the back of the actual vaccine record the school keeps in the students file - in small print no less, and NEVER volunteered as information to parents. I have seen this form many times - my son was not vaccinated until he was 7 and he was in pre-school and public schools. In fact, he didn't get allergies until AFTER he received his vaccinations. To often we educate ourselves on the side of the argument that we most agree on instead of being open minded enough to hear both sides of the story - and their applicable waivers/legal mandates, constitutional rights, etc. etc.

Regarding the chicken pox vaccine - sorry, but it is known fact that contracting chicken pox as a child once (perhaps in rare cases twice) infers lifetime immunity AND contracting it as an adult is potentially fatal. Why oh why parents got duped into giving their children this vaccine (which guarantees immunity for 7 years, and then boosters - which pushes the likely hood of contracting the disease when it is most dangerous - adulthood) is beyond me. Who as an adult gets boosters anyway, UNLESS you have a special need or are traveling???

I don't like vaccines in general. I agree in some cases they are advisable, perhaps necessary - but do the research: before mass vaccinations (mass $$$ for dr.s - sounds like vets in that way right?) the rate of disease was on the decline perhaps due to increased hygiene standards. Yes you have pockets of outbreaks. Whooping cough in particular. Yes many many lives were saved (polio) and many many people benefit from them. (Also you might want to check that whole polio business as well. Turns out a lot of people contracted Polio BECAUSE of the vaccine. Wouldn't you know - live virus). But it wasn't 40 years ago when mumps/measles/chicken pox was a part of childhood and you were good for life. I don't agree with vaccinating people with compromised or weakened immune systems (infants under two, sick children, puppies (learned the hard way) and ill or susceptible adult dogs). Despite what most Vets, Dr.'s, big Pharma, FDA, Legislators, school districts, corporations will tell you, vaccines can and DO cause harm and are not always necessary. The majority of this stuff is a racket if you ask me.

Lots of people have issues with rabies vaccine boosters. I'm sure for every 10 people that have problems, 10,000 don't, so i'm not looking at this lopsidedly. But common sense doesn't seem to dictate peoples actions when it's county mandate all pets get rabies shots when there hasn't been a rabies case in a pet in 25 years. Certainly if your dog is eating potentially rabid animals, but what if you have an inside lap dog in an apartment in the middle of the city? What the heck are the chances of that dog getting bitten by a rabid animal? Yes I'm glad there is 3 year licensing, but since the immunity lasts for 7 years according to many many scientific studies (too many to quote here but PM me and I can send them to you), why does the county/state require 3 year boosters especially when rabies vaccine is notorious for cumulative toxicity?

If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck...

(Again: these are all my personal opinions and no matter how highly I hold them or argue MY point, I am in no way shape or form downing anyone's choice to do what they feel is best for their families or pets. I respect everyone's right to make their own decisions based on their own judgement, and I will not judge them for those decisions or actions).

Jonesy's Mom - Dusty's swellling was all gone by the next morning. I think that was because they gave her the steriod shot instead of just benedryl. It may take Jonesy a little longer without the shot.

Cia, as you said, we are all entitled to our own opinions on the matter. I live in Canada where the immunization laws in schools may be different from the US. My opinion is based on personal experience, and since our Doctors make no more or no less money offering these vaccines, that point is moot in Canada.

The wonderful thing is that we both live in a free society in which we are able to not only have our own opinions, but express them as well. :D

I do hope Jonesy is on the mend soon! Please keep us posted.

Which is why I love this forum: Its diversity!!!

Jonesy is doing well now- the swelling is going down and she's almost looking her normal self. Last night we had a big tornado scare and she did pretty well. Actually, Brian and I went to the movies and about 3/4 of the way through it cut off and we heard massive hail and wind. Everyone poured out into the lobby/hallway and the manager told us there was a tornado on the ground not far from us  . Now, I'm from Southern California (earthquake country) and my hometown weather is known as the best weather in the contiguous 48 (states). San Diego's version of a bad storm is 2 inches of rain over a 24 hour period, and it's only considered bad because 300 people will have gotten into car crashes on the roads. So to say I have no experience with severe weather is a huge understatement. I've never heard thunder as loud as its been here in Dallas, and I've never seen bolts of lightning so frequent and so bright. So to hear that a tornado is on the ground, we're stuck in a movie theater, there's golf ball sized hail and sideways rain coming down...well I was nervous. And to top it all off - sweet baby Jonesy is home. Alone.
As soon as the theater management told us we could go Brian and I bolted home, which thankfully is close to the theater. Jonesy appeared fine when we got home. The car, not so much. Small dents on the hood and roof from the hail. :(
(Just heard on the news Southwest airlines took 8 planes off schedule to check for hail damage - there was baseball and grapefruit sized hail out there last night). I stayed up all night watching the radar and our warning/watch wasn't lifted until about 10:30. Jonesy snuck in my purse and tried to eat my movie theater candy...
Very crazy night in Tornado Alley!

Cia, Glad to hear Jonesy's swelling is going down.

What a scary experience you had last night, especially if you've never been around that type of weather before. Little Jonesy probably slept through the whole thing...LOL! What a little stinker, climbing in to your purse for candy. I hope she didn't get any, and if she did, that it wasn't chocolate.

That's too bad about your car, will your insurance cover the repairs? I had a car damaged by hail years ago, I had just bought it a few weeks earlier, so I was still babying it then that happened! I was devastated! :|

Cia, I can only imagine how frightened you must have been in that storm, especially if this is new to you. I'm glad to hear that Jonesy seems unaffected by it all.

That is some big hail when it dents the car! I do hope your insurance covers it.

We are having quite a thunderstorm this evening, but I am used to them. Henry doesn't like the loud cracks of thunder, but the ones in the far off distance don't seem to phase him too much. Oliver sleeps through anything these days! Personally, I enjoy a good storm as long as we don't lose power, including snow storms. All bets are off though once the power goes out for so many reasons.

Tracy posted a very important warning about Xylitol which is apparently found in sugar free gum. It's highly poisonous to dogs, but I'm not sure we have it here in Canada as I've checked labels for it and haven't found any yet. Chocolate is also not good for dogs at all, so I hope all Jonesy ate was something with too much sugar. You had quite an evening. By the way, what movie were you attempting to see? Inquiring minds want to know. :P

I hope you are all safe and sound now.

Nah..Jonesy didn't get any of the candy (Chewy Jolly Ranchers btw...yum. Knew about the chocolate and a few other doggie no no's. But she'd have a hard time getting me for my chocolate anyway - we'd have to fight  ). She did sniff around my mouth for 10 minutes as I was chomping one though. Must have smelled good and fruity :D

Pirates of the Caribbean was the movie. Brian was able to get replacement tickets but we're not going back to see the rest of the movie. It was good, but not so great that we need to know how it ends. Brian has been trying to see Thor for the past two weeks  Meh... I could pass.

We called our insurance and apparently what they'll do is send us to get an estimate and then cut us a check minus our deductible for repairs. We'll get an estimate Friday afternoon so hopefully it'll be fixed soon. The poor car looks like its pockmarked. None of the paint chipped (but Brian want's a paint job so he jokingly said he'd throw rocks at it before we took it in), and the dents aren't very deep so it shouldn't be too much to suction the dents out or however they do it. There are just so many, yikes. I feel so bad for people who were caught in the hail though. I'm sure a few cuts and bruises were had that night.

Today, weather-wise, was gorgeous and we had a nice long walk this morning. I tried to tire her out because lately she's been doing the psycho puppy thing - running in circles, bolting on the leash (the collar catches her and she flips on her back), and general misbehavior and stubbornness. I normally walk her two or three times a day, we have play time pretty frequently, and Brian teaches her sit, stay, jump and come twice a day. What gives? She wigs out almost as soon as she gets outside, although she was amazingly pleasant on our two mile long walk.

***Edit: I just read about the 'zoomies' in another thread. Sounds about right.
