Help me name my new puppy!

Postby Sam and Sarah on Fri Jun 08, 2012 8:55 am

Hey there!

So, I'm Sam. I'm new here, and if you haven't guessed from the title, pretty soon my puppy will be new here, too. I've always been more of a cat guy, having volunteered at cat rescues in some capacity since high school (I'm 24 now); but I also have a moderately active lifestyle, and for better or for worse, cats aren't usually "active" pets. Almost all of my favorite breeds are big dogs, but living in a town house, I knew I couldn't give a big dog the space s/he deserves... so, after doing my research, I settled on the Corgi: the "big dog in a small package."

I knew very little about breeders when I first started doing my homework on them two years ago, and I used to believe the bad rap they got. Now, after having visited various Pembroke and Cardigan Welsh Corgi breeders, I have a totally different (and more positive) take on them. All the breeders I met were really nice and helpful and had their puppies' best interests at heart! They were able to use the information I'd given them to match me up with the right dog. Now I've finally found the right puppy for me. And here she is!

Image

She's a 4-month-old Cardigan Welsh Corgi with a brindle coat. She's dark brown now, but apparently as she's grown she's gotten more patches of red in her fur (and will probably keep on doing that as she grows up). Having met her a few times, and according to her breeder, she's a sweet dog who wants to be wherever you are. She gets these bursts of energy and loves to play (and chew--she is a puppy, after all!) but she's also happy to curl up with you if you're reading a book or watching TV. I'm bringing her home next Sunday, June 17th... and I can't wait!

Unfortunately, I can't really come up with just one name. Everyone in the office is excited to meet her, and they've all offered their suggestions. So far, the most popular names are Olive and Poppy, which are both really cute, but I could always use more inspiration. My cats all came from rescues, where someone had already given them a name. The only one I named myself was Minou, a cat we rescued from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, since minou is French for "kitty." (She passed away last year at 14, but she loved dogs and probably would have loved this puppy too.)

Anyway, I'm open to ideas and could use some feedback! If she was your dog, what would you name her? What name does she "look like?"

Thanks in advance for any suggestions! You can bet that I'll be back next Sunday with more pictures and a new name for my newest family member. It's great to meet you all (in advance) and I'm really looking forward to posting at this forum in the future!

Thanks,
Sam

Welcome to the Daily Puppy Sam and ? from Oliver & Henry, and their Mum in London, Ontario. :D

Selecting a name is really quite personal and hard for others to make suggestions unless they know you well. Do you have a list of names that are in contention? It might be easier to start there. I tend to select names that are "human" while others like mythical names, or names in different languages, like your sweet Cat, may she rest in peace.

Let us know what you think and we'll go from there.

Officially Welcome Sam! Your puppy is adorable and yes names are personal. I chose my current names Allie, I just liked it and Ice since I knew I was going to show him and compete with him, it sounded like a cool name in the ring.

Since you asked......the first name that came to me was Holly. Others might have same great names to.

Bless you to have homed a Katrina Cat, that is wonderful. Glad she had a great life with you!

I'm Kian, I reside the Southwest U.S. on a little farm and have Allie and Ice, my two Aussies. Where abouts are you? Don't need to name cities, we are worldwide and it's fun to know where abouts everyone is.

Thanks (both of you!) for your input. You're right, a name is personal. I guess I've been wanting this puppy for such a long time that I'm almost afraid of picking a name that doesn't fit this dream dog!

Some of the names that we (friends, coworkers, etc.) have come up with were Olive, Evey, Clara, Chloe, Charlie/Charlotte, and Poppy. The first two are my favorite, because of all of them I feel like she "looks" like an Olive or an Evey. But I hadn't really thought about mythical names or anything like that, so I'm going to do a little looking into it and see if there's a name that really suits her.

And I'm sorry, I totally forgot to mention where I am! I don't mind doing it-- I'm in the DC area, so future pup is going to be a city dog.

Thanks again for your advice! :)

Welcome DC, that is a big city! You may want to wait till she gets home and see how names fit, there isn't a hurry there. How soon till you get her?

Welcome! Your pup is so adorably cute!

Kudos to you for having rescue cats! I have always been a cat person and have always had kitties (and dogs, too). There is something about cats that is so unique and different than dogs. They are like little humans in furry bodies  they each offer something special. :D

I like that name "Olive" you picked. It kinda looks like her...if you know what i mean. When we picked our puppy (actually he picked us) my OH just blurted out "Waffles" and it stuck and that's his name. Silly as it sounds....it fits.

I like Evey! It's unique and has an "old world" feel to it. I can picture an older British woman being named Evey and since Corgi's are the Queen's favourite breed, that seems to suit. :D

I've been to DC several times but only briefly as we often were passing through on our way to Middleburg, Virginia. :)

Hi your puppy is just gorgeous, and yes a name has to have a special meaning for you. I have been around Pembroke Corgi's all my life as my mother bred and showed them. They are just a wonderful breed, very faithful and fun to be around. The Cardigan Corgi is just the same - just a little stockier. I myself have a tri colour Pembroke corgi called Tauri who is now 10 years old. I found it difficult to come up with a name at the time but as he was born on the 1st May (which made him a Taurus star sign) he became TAURI. Have fun choosing a name. Corgi Lover

Olive and Evie (Evelyn for long) are my two top picks if I ever have a real, human daughter! :) So I guess you could definitely say I like those names! I like Charlie. You could also spell it Charly or Charley.

Hey everyone!

So, the puppy came home today, and is currently so pooped that she's napping beside me. Going into it, I thought I was going to name her Evey, but when I was driving home with her I got the idea to name her Sarah Jane Smith. Me being the huge nerd that I am, I'm a huge fan of Doctor Who, which, for those who haven't seen it, is a sci-fi show about a "Time Lord" who travels through time and space with various "companions." One of them was named Sarah Jane Smith, and she later got her own spin-off show called The Sarah Jane Smith Adventures. I figured, my corgi is going to be my companion for a long time, and she's going to have adventures of her own, so it made sense!

She looks pretty goofy with masking tape around her ears right now, but pretty soon I'm going to be following her around everywhere taking pictures of her. I can't help it-- she's too cute not to photograph!

Thanks all for your advice. I'm glad I'm now a proud puppy parent!

Thanks!

Is there anything I can do to calm her down? She's not panicking, but I think she's a little stressed that she's in a new place, away from her littermates. What can I do to make her feel safe here?

Whoops, sorry! I'll try to post in just one place.

She was born 3/12/12, so she just turned 3 months old.

Great she is 15 weeks, that is wonderful. Give her time to look over and explore her new home and yard, everything is unfamiliar to her. You will see her settle down quickly to your home. I would put her crate next to your bed and let her know your are there, many times older pups don't whine much. Hope your night is restful! Remember she will go out sometime in the night to potty, you will be getting up! Be sure she has something to chew on to fall back asleep.
