It's been a rough morning - parvo

Postby pksteph on Wed Dec 10, 2008 12:37 pm

My puppy, Brutus, died early this morning. He has been fighting parvo since Saturday night.

Our other puppy (Brutus' littermate/sister) Pebbles showed sighs of Parvo first and has survived. This virus is HORRIBLE! I've never seen an animal dying like that. Wow, I thought Pebbles was sick when we took her to the vet! Brutus had, at one point, was completely non-responsive until I got him to the pet ER. He was moaning between treatments yesterday!

This is heartbreaking!

Now we need to tell our daughter about him. I didn't have the heart to break this too her right before she had to go to school. We'll probably have a little funeral for him in the back yard.

Ugh!!

I should have known something bad was going to happen by all the dog poop around that shelter's grounds (the shelter was someone's house in the country).... we adopted Brutus and Pebbles almost 2 weeks ago. (Neither of us had heard of parvo before.)

What a terrible morning. Poor baby, Brutus. Such a sad thing to have happen. My heart goes out to your family. I agree that parvo is a nasty disease. Years ago, we had a cockapoo that got it. She was in the vet clinic for over a week but she pulled through. I'm glad that Pebbles is OK. She will miss her littermate/brother and will need extra attention. Good luck to you and keep us informed on how Pebbles is doing.

I am so very sorry for your loss. Be thankful that Pebbles is doing ok now. I know it will not take away the pain you feel over Brutus but know that he is over the Rainbow Bridge and is happy and healthy. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.

Bless you for taking two puppies from that place. I'm so sorry Brutus didn't make it, but he knows he was loved and you did all you could. Pebbles will miss him but I'm sure will be of some comfort to you and your family. I'm so sorry that your children have to go through this, as well as you. Brutus will be watching over you from the Rainbow Bridge. My heart goes out to you and know that I'll say a special prayer for Brutus and all of you this evening. I'm so sorry.

Very sorry to hear about your loss. Parvo is a nasty virus and can live for many years. I know your prob not thinking about another dog now, if you do remember you have the virus in your home now. Hopefully, Pebbles will have a full recovery.

So sorry to hear this sad news . I hope Pebbles is doing alright.

As Kian said, remember Parvo is now in your house and yard. It can stay in the yard for up to 2 years. I am sure the vet has discussed with you all the bleach cleaning that must be done to everything in your house.

Best wishes to Pebbles.

Thanks everyone for replying!

We buried him when Alex got home from school yesterday. My husband had already dug the hole so all we needed to do was put his box in the ground. Alex drew a picture of Brutus and a little note with hearts saying "Best boy dog ever!" and we put it in with him. Poor Alex was crying the whole time and helping her daddy fill in the hole.

Yes, I know parvo stays in the envirnment for a long time. I've been bleaching everything (I got the red blotches all over my hands to prove it... gotta get some gloves!). We need to do the yard next.

On a brighter note, Pebbles seems to be doing better and better. Yesterday she was running around A LOT and barking at the cats or when she gets stuck at the top of the stairs... she can get up the stairs but scared to get down. :)

Bless you for honouring Brutus that way. I'm so sorry your children, and you, are hurting right now. I was happy to read your good news about Pebbles. That is just wonderful! Do keep us posted (perhaps under another thread). Hugs from Oliver and his Mummy, Deborah :)
