May you rest in peace my precious Echo

Postby Lori&Nylah on Fri Oct 15, 2010 9:37 pm

I've been avoiding this all week - it makes it too real. Our sweet Echo - 7 yr old German Shepherd/Collie X - had to put to sleep on (Canadian) Thanksgiving Monday.

Echo had lost close to 20lbs over the past year, but no one was quite sure why (we treated her for pancreas issues, but that's all we were ever told). About two weeks ago, a new vet (we went for a second opinion), found that her kidney numbers were off. She was admitted to the hospital for four days, hooked up to an IV to flush the toxins from her system. Sadly, the numbers never returned to normal.

Last week, she began refusing to eat. We tried everything - from bacon, to steak, to turkey - she wanted nothing to do with it. Her fur started to lose it's softness, from lack of nutrition. My sister (a vet tech) came over daily, with a bag of fluid, liquid vitamins, and pain medication. But you could tell - she was losing strength rapidly. By Monday morning, she could barely walk. She stood around, panting, drooling, staring into the distance. She wasn't herself at all. We made the difficult decision to call the vet to our home, and say goodbye. They assured us that there wasn't much more we could have done - albeit force feeding her, but that wasn't something we wanted to do. She was tired.

It all happened so quickly that I still catch myself forgetting she's gone. Her collar and leash are still in the basket; her food dish still on the kitchen floor. I miss her so much, I hope she knows how much I love her, but I know she's running free - happily watching over us. May you rest in peace sweet Echo. Always in our hearts.

Lori, I am so truly sorry for your loss. Those are such beautiful pictures you posted of Echo. Kidney failure is often rapid so I'm sure you did all you could for her. I lost my Emma to the same thing and it happened so fast, my head was spinning.

You have my deepest and most heartfelt sympathy. She's happily running free now and I believe you'll all be together again one day.

I am so sorry. Deb xo

She was a beautiful girl. I am very sorry for your loss. It doesn't help you that it was quick but at least for her she wasn't suffering for a long time.

Lori, Echo was a beautiful girl. I am so sorry for your loss. I lost my Ralphie to kidney failure. Within a week he went from healthy to gone. It is so shocking to lose our loving companions like that.

Sending hugs and prayers to you and your family from Margie and Jose.

Thank you all for the very kind words - means so much to me!

It's been an exceptionally difficult week for us. While Echo was going downhill, Nylah suddenly started coughing up phlegm last Sunday. She couldn't stop, so off to the Emergency Vet we went. Three hours later (and a cancelled Thanksgiving Dinner), she was put on antibiotics and cough suppressants, for Kennel Cough. She's not allowed to be around other dogs for 3-4 weeks, meaning we had to drop out of Agility and no longer allowed at our daily dog park.

On top of that, we were back at the vet's office on Wednesday, for her allergies. She was scratching so much that she'd developed cuts inside her ears. She's been switched to a new diet, and put on steroids. So far, she's scratching a lot less - we're going to see what the lowest dose of steroids we can get away with, until the winter comes.

Overall - a crumby week around here! Your thoughtful messages are much appreciated!
