Tex

Postby Emily&Harley on Sun Apr 10, 2011 12:59 am

Today reading through this forum and all the grieving owners who have lost their beloved dogs got me thinking about my dog Tex. I lost Tex last year November 5th and it was one of the most upsetting times for me. I rescued Tex from a shelter here in Australia when he was five years old. He was my first dog and taught me so many things about the love and bond between a canine companion and its owner. I had Tex for eight short years although he was 13 years old when he crossed over the rainbow bridge. To me Tex wasn't just a dog he was my best friend. It has been five short months since he left and it still doesn't feel the same without him gone.

Over Christmas time Harley came to be a part of the family. Tilly our kitten missed Tex so much and she needed another companion (as we all did) and having Harley come into our family made our Christmas one never to forget. Although Harley would never be able to replace Tex he was honestly the best thing for us. In a way Harley saved us from our sadness and gave us something new and exciting to concentrate on and love just as much as Tex. At first I thought that bringing a new puppy into the family was way too soon but as soon as I saw Harley I knew it was meant to be. If Tex was still with us I know Harley and him would be such great friends.

Tex rests peacefully under a tree in a flower garden located in our backyard. He was such a gentle loving little thing and I couldn't have asked for a better first dog. I will always miss him but he will always be in my heart knowing one day I will see him once again.

I have never really talked to anyone (apart from family) about Tex's death and I think in some way writing this has helped me.

Time does heal, but we never forget. I'm glad posting this helped some. We have all been there and know how you feel.

I'm glad Harley came into your life and helped both you and Tilly. What a great Christmas gift!

Emily we are all here when you need us. I couldn't have got past my grief without my friends here, and though I don't post a lot I drop in to catch up.

Emily, I often like to think that the new ones were sent by the old ones to help heal our hearts. In no way does loving a new one diminish the love for the one that went before. If anything, it is a tribute to the love you once shared.

Both of your dogs have great names. Tex goes with Harley. That is not an accident. :) I'm so glad you shared Tex with us. Harley is very lucky to follow in his footsteps.

As my dear friend Tracy has said, dogs live shorter lives than us humans so that we have the opportunity to love many of them. I am paraphrasing, but "Deerie Me" knows of what she speaks.

I am sure that you gave Tex the very best life, as you are now giving Harley. Thank you again for sharing him with us.

:)

Thank you Deborah.

"dogs live shorter lives than us humans so that we have the opportunity to love many of them"

I love this statement as it is so very true! Even though I have only got to own two dogs I know there are many more in my future and I look forward to meeting them as well as remembering the ones that will go to Rainbow Bridge.

I often think that maybe I should have given Tex a puppy companion like Harley to keep him young in his last years of life but I know that Tex loved having me to himself, just as I loved having him to myself. :)

There may very well be another rescue dog like Tex on the way in a couple of years time once I have Harley's training down pat. :D

Emily, I am so sorry to read of the loss of your beloved Tex. He will always be in your heart.

I am also glad you have found someone new to love in Harley. I too have been chosen by a new love, Jinx. They in no way take the place of the one you lost, but carve out a new niche of their own. I can't imagine being without her now, as I'm sure you can't imagine life without Harley.

Sandy

Thank you for your kind words. I read about your loss of Cheyenne and how you adopted Jinx. Your story is similar to mine.
I definitely can not imagine life without Harley but I know Tex will always remain a part of me. :)

That is nice tribute to Tex. Happily we have dogs come into our lives and with sadness see them leave us much to early. I too know we will see our beloved pets again, until then the memories are sweet.
