One year ago we said goodbye to our beloved Virgil, a wonderful tall handsome boy who came out of the woods in western Virginia. I am sure my big boy Buddy, who had just passed, another tall handsome black boy made it possible for Virgil to be shipped to NJ and put at The Petsmart, on a Saturday, (we never shopped at that mall on a Sat., due to huge crowds). We saw him with the volunteers from The Humane Society of Atlantic County just after we were in the toys shedding tears over a "Buddy Ball", one of his special toys that Baby Sister had sent for him. We rounded the corner and I heard the name Virgil which gave me cause to stop. I was hearing the lines from the song "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" and Virgil Caine was his name.....! we spoke and checked this big boy out and then we walked on. A few minutes later we rounded another corner, farther away, and stood and watched him and the volunteers, all of a sudden the three of them, husband and wife and Virgil, all turned towards us and we all stood looking at each other. The wife gestured to us to come up the aisle and so we did. That big boy got into the back seat in the pick-up, curled up into a ball and rode the 45 minute ride home to his new home sound asleep. He was greeted by two of the sweetest Labs, a very handsome black boy, Midi, a most loving boy and our special princess our beloved yellow girl, Rosebudd. They became fast friends, never a growl or problem among them. For the first whole week Virgil ate his dinner and went directly to his sleep spot, his bed on the floor. After that time he knew there was no bedtime restrictions.
I could go on for at least an hour or more with his life with us, but he enjoyed good health right up until his diagnosis of lymphoma a year ago in May. We loved him then and love him now, he was a gift to us, I surely believe from big boy Buddy, and we were lucky to have been part of his life.
