Healing thoughts needed.............

Thank you Angie! I just got in from taking my mom out to dinner for her birthday! My dad is doing well. He was back at the nursing home in the rehab wing for a while and thrived!! He is back on his side now but in a wing where none of the residents are able to get up and mess with anything. They were afraid one of the ladies in the original wing would spy his tubing and pull it out or mess with it. (They don't know what they are doing those 2 lady residents....they just keep their hands busy folding peoples blankets and rearranging things in everyone's rooms!) He is actually talking in coherent sentences, or I should say sentences that we can understand almost every word. He thinks he is back at work again. He hasn't thought that for about a year now. He was telling us how no one was arranging the produce in the right racks and he had to redo it all. (He was a produce manager in grocery stores almost all of his working life!) You don't know how good it was to hear him talk like that even though the scenario was really all in his head! His nurse is very very pleased with his progress and how he looks. She said the feeding tube is probably the best thing we could have done! Anyway...thanks for asking about him!!

Oh my! That is wonderful news...I'm just remembering not too long ago that you were just hoping for a look of recognition...now he's actually remembering and communicating with you regularly! I'm so happy for you all.

I do understand the EXACT thing you're talking about as far as him almost re-living the life he used to lead. Tammy still does this; I think it's because right now she's stuck in one place so she relies on her memories (many from our childhood) to keep her going until she can get up and make some more.

I'm also happy to hear that you got to spend a birthday dinner with your mama. I'm sure she really appreciates the time you take with her! You all sound like a wonderful family and I'm glad I've gotten to meet you...even if it is just on-line (FOR NOW )

Linda, a big Happy Birthday to your Mom! I am so pleased to hear that your father is managing much better now. As you said, it is nice to have some communication again, even if it isn't all in the present tense. You are so right...that doesn't matter. He is doing very well indeed. Just a quick update on my dad. Yesterday he was joking and laughing.......some was all in his own mind, but thats ok! He told us he could find his fishing worms but didn't know where his tackle and pole were!! (I want to know where he found the worms!) He also told his nurse that he wanted some White Castles!! She felt so bad that she couldn't feed him anything by mouth since he has the feeding tube, but said if he gets to go off of the feeding tube at any time she is driving right to White Castle and buying him some!! It was a good day.........

That's great Linda. Sounds like he's getting better all the time. What are white castles?

They are like small hamburgers, very flat and square with chopped browned onions and a pickle. You can eat 3 or 4 to equal one regular hamburger.

(Not nice but as teenagers we used to call them sliders or maggot muffins!) Ohhh, not nice!!

My dad loved them.........


Now that I think about it White Castle may be just a midwestern restaurant chain......I know their headquarters are in Indianapolis.
