As the wife of an ex-logger, I remember too well the sick feeling you get when you're laid off from your job. My husband was usually laid off twice a YEAR, in the heat of summer (too dry to run machines in the bush) and winter (too cold/icy).
My son is out of work in Calgary right now, and my daughter has had her hours cut by three-quarters! She's applied to the LPN program at her local university, and she most likely will be accepted. She wrote her intake exams yesterday and aced them. She just needs to finish the Biology prerequisite (she's almost all the way through) and she'll be in. She's nervous about going back to school full time, though.
We'll keep our fingers and toes crossed for you. Let us know how you make out, OK? And kudos to you for your career choice. I have great admiration for people in service, especially medical service.

Good luck with the new job. I have my fingers crossed that you get it. (I don't pray)
