Matilda's off to the vet tomorrow. Updated

Postby mary in wonderland on Thu Mar 25, 2010 11:27 am

After calling 10 or so vets, I finally found one that will see Miss Matilda. So we got an appt. set up for tomorrow afternoon. She's been sneezing, and has a slight yellow tint around her nose (I'm guessing from discharge), so I want to get that checked out. And I want to get her a general wellness check and have the vet sex her, just so I can be sure she's a girl.

Vibes that her sneezing is no big deal would be greatly appreciated.

Mary,

I hope Miss Matilda has nothing more serious than a bunny cold.
If she turns out to be a male, will it be Mr. Matilda?

I had a guinea pig named Sara, found out later she was a he...after that his name was Sara the Boy Pig.

LOL RJM. Yes she will then just be Mr. Matilda.

Thanks Kris! I'm thinking she may have a cold set off by the stress of the move?

that's exactly what I was thinking too! bunny colds can become serious quick, and the discharge concerns me a little.
Let us know how what the vet says.

Is she wiping her nose with her paws? One of mine did that, it was so cute!

It's not a ton of discharge luckily, just enough to lightly stain her nose. I'm glad I found a vet that will see us tomorrow rather than having to wait.

She's not wiping her nose much. She's not acting any differently than she has been aside from sneezing every few hours.

I'll definitely let you know what the vet says! Our appointments at four, I'm hoping all goes well and that I like the vet because he may become her regular vet then.

Thank you Linda! I'm really hoping it's nothing more than a cold which requires some anti-biotics. I'm anxious to just get to the vets and see what he says. I had to call SO many vets to find one that would see her, I think it was the tenth or eleventh vet I had called. All of them either didn't see rabbits or if they did they weren't accepting any new patients.

It's going to be a busy day tomorrow. I have a meeting at work at 7:30, tomorrow is the day that Matilda's cage gets completely taken apart cleaned and disinfected. And then we have the vet appt. at four. And I need to go out and pick up a few things at the store.

I'm sure Matilda will be fine with under you love and care! It must been frustrating to find a vet. I had to smile at the sexing of a bunny. OH has bunnies at his store and he is the one with the knowledge how to sex a bunny. When he was gone some of the employees tried on thier own...oops.. Let just say a buyer got "extra bunnies"! :?

Our vet appointment went well, the vet was very nice and seemed very rabbit savvy. :) It turns out Matilda has a very mild upper respiratory infection and she's getting gentamicin two times daily via a drop in each nostril for 7-10 days. The vet said otherwise she's in very good shape, and that I caught the upper respiratory infection early. She checked her from head to toe, and sexed her. Miss Matilda is definitely a girl. ;)

Other than that, Matilda was very well behaved. The vet tech went to get a towel to hold her and was like 'oh no there's no towel', Matilda remained very calm though and even with no towel the tech wasn't scratched at all. Oh and they weighed her, she's 2 lbs. 15 oz.

We picked her up some kale today, so we'll see how she likes it. :) We got her some applewood to chew on while we were out too.

Good news, Amber! I can't imagine giving a bunny meds up the nose twice a day. She will certainly learn to be handled, won't she?

I'm so glad she's OK. Rabbits can fall ill so quickly. Matilda is a lucky bun.

Thank you Phyrie! I was so happy when the vet said it's very very mild because I caught it so early. Giving her the meds tonight actually wasn't too bad, John held her while I dropped them in her nose. And if all else fails and she ends up giving too much trouble with taking them in her nose, they can also be put in her eyes. The vet said the nose is preferable, but the tear ducts drain directly into the sinuses anyways.

You're right though, she's going to learn to be handled one way or the other. ;) I was actually surprised that she didn't put up one bit of a fight at the vets. I know the tech looked worried when she couldn't find a towel.

I gave her a small piece of kale for her troubles, she seemed to quite enjoy it. :)

I'm glad to hear that Matilda is doing well and that you found a good vet for her.

Ben has such a soft spot for bunnies and always has. He would kill me if he knew I was saying this about his 18 year old self, but I know he would LOVE Matilda. He's on his way home with a friend. I'm going to show him Matilda's pictures when he arrives. :? :o

You are a good bunny Mummy!

Thank you Deb! I was so impressed with her vet. She checked everything, listened to her heart and lungs, felt her belly, checked for fleas, checked her teeth, looked in her eyes, nose, ears, and sexed her. :)

You'll have to let me know what Ben says about Miss Matilda. ;) And there's absolutely nothing wrong with him being 18 and having a soft spot for buns. Heck, after I was done giving her her medicine I was getting ready to take her back from John to put in her cage and he was like "No, she's sooo cute when she's like this let me hold her for a little bit."

Mary, I showed Ben the pictures in front of his friend. Both of them were "awwwwww'ing" over Matilda. They love the picture of her little cotton tail, as they called it!

I'm not at all surprised that John has a soft spot for Matilda. He seems to love all creatures, and he is a kind man.
