Phyrie - The flower rock is very beautiful! I love the Inukshuk. Is that an Eskimo word?

RJM - I love those rocks too! Very pretty. Is the first picture of rocks made into buttons? Love the turtle  .

Margie, my mom was at Flatbush and Avenue U and went to Brooklyn College as well. What a small world! We moved out to Long Island after living in Forest Hills, to Oceanside where I lived up until I moved to Hoboken after college (I went to Univ of Delaware, but Long Island was always home :) ), which isn't so far from Port Washington!

There IS a fish here that is found no where else on Earth, though! It's a kind of stickleback, found only in the flooded quarry known as Heichelt Lake. Every year scientists and students from various universities come up here and study this little fish. I don't know what they're studying, but I suppose it being unique to that one lake makes it noteworthy, at least in some circles! *grin*

Phyrie, I learned about these sticklebacks in my third year evolution class in University!

These sticklebacks are unique because there are 2 "types" of the same species. One lives in the upper water levels, and one lives in the deeper water. The ones in the deeper water do not have functioning eyes, and I also think they lack pigment! There was more to it then that, but it was 3 years ago so please cut me some slack, lol.

I have heard of the Stickleback fish, though I don't know much about it. I love the flower rock, looks like a counter top stone, very pretty. I can see why the island wants it to stay there, that I respect.

RJM those stones are beautiful, the turtle is really cute.

LK, I love the Blue Ridge mountains.

Madi you can post a few more pics, it's okay. I love SC and the bible belt, the history there holds a fascination for me. OH and I spent a week there 2 years ago and visited a lot of those areas you mentioned. Charleston is a fun and historic town, loved the pralines there! We went down through the shopping area and the outdoor markets, lots of art and local craft for sell. I wish I had taken a pic of all the church signs, that was hilarious some of the sayings they put on thier signs to advertise!

Janis it was my ex's father that lived in Marin County, I enjoyed many vacations there.

I love this thread as well.

Tracy I still get confused when it comes to the northeast coast, I hope to visit there someday. Maybe a DP meeting in New York City?? How fun that would be, NY would never be the same.

Tracy, Jon lives in Jersey, we can do a drive by, it seems as if your question was answered, but NYC is comprised of 5 Boroughs, Manhattan is the big one, the "City" and Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and The Bronx(never just Bronx, always THE Bronx) I uploaded another map, hope it helps, I live west of NYC, about 20 mins from Newark Airport(on the map). Really enjoying reading about where everyone lives. Phillip, I have family from Athlone(cousin's husband) His father was a bookmaker there. I have spoke in the wispering arch and tried to get my arms around the celtic cross at Clanmacnois. Most of the family is from Galway. First trip back was '72 I turned 8 in Ireland.

Phillip, I have been back almost 20 times since '72. I was just there June '09, playing golf with my brother and his son. We played mostly down the west coast, but I have played Glasson in the past. Might be over next time the Volvo sailing race is in Galway, heard the craic was mighty , we just missed it in '09.

hello everyone! :D i live in a small village, near thessaloniki, greece!there are not many things to do,ofcourse!there are 2 to3 mini markets, two bakery shops and two coffee shops!when you feel like going out for a drink, you have to go downtown wich is about 30 kilometers from here!
greece is know for her great weather during summer and ofcourse for her beautiful islands and beaches!thessaloniki is the second biggest city after athens!nightlife is what she is most popoular of!also mpougatsa, wich is some short of a creme pie!
the good thing around here is that relationships with other citizens get to be very close, you know everybody nearby.another thing is that we live really close to the sea!we get to see it and visit anytime we wish!laso the "rythms" of the life here are not so fast, the exact opposite from athens, where people walk to their jobs as if they run anxiously! last but not least, the city is beautiful to live!
on the other hand, there are some really bad things here.something that noone can help not to notice:strays.strays everywhere.in every single town .it is so sad.people`s education about animals is so poor around here!the need for neutering is something that some dog owners may have never heard before.and if they did, they never go on to the precidure.so we have strays that no one likes.if the dog is small and seems harmless it may get lucky to find someone to feed him.but if he is a big full grown dog he has no luck.and here comes the shelters.there are only few considering the amount of strays.voluntiers are so hard to find!and of course, maney is a big promblem for their great work!
another bad bad thing is that there aren`t any dog parks aywhere!i guess there is one 30 kilometers from here and ther must be some in athens.i take my dog to play in the football field, thats the only place we can go.oh,and having a pet inside your appartment is something that you will rearly see here!

Thought I'd join in too :D

I live in Perth, Western Australia.

I stole this from Wikipedia:

Perth is the capital and largest city of the Australian state of Western Australia and the fourth most populous city in Australia. The Perth metropolitan area has an estimated population of 1,659,000.

The metropolitan area is located in the south-west of the continent between the Indian Ocean and a low coastal escarpment known as the Darling Range. The central business district and suburbs of Perth are situated on the Swan River.

Shortly after the establishment of the port settlement of Fremantle, Perth was founded on 12 June 1829 by Captain James Stirling as the political centre of the free-settler Swan River Colony. As the business and administration centre for the resource rich state, Perth has grown consistently faster than the national average.

Perth became known worldwide as the "City of Light" when city residents lit their house lights and streetlights as American astronaut John Glenn passed overhead while orbiting the earth on Friendship 7 in 1962. The city repeated the act as Glenn passed overhead on the Space Shuttle in 1998.

Perth is tied for eighth place in The Economist's 2010 list of the World's Most Livable Cities

I know that its also one of the most isolated cities in the world.

I think its actually a very small city in comparison to maybe any other city lol

The most known people that I could think of that come from Perth are Heath Ledger & Bon Scott (from ACDC), but not sure what else we are know for. Maybe our wineries? I guess being in Australia we are also know for Kangaroos, Koala's, Emu's ect. If you live in certain areas you will get kangaroos jumping on the street. I used to live in a Suburb further east where I even had to slow down whilst driving because emu's were crossing the road

I'm not sure if anyone here has watched Oprah's "down under" episodes? I know they aired here a few nights ago. I actually didnt watch it but I know that some of the Oprah fans flown over from the US came to WA to visit all our wine regions, so maybe they had a segment showing it :D

Here is a map of WA

This shows the metro area of Perth - I live in the most northern point on the coast.

I took this photo of the city a few years ago at sunrise, the city backs right onto the Swan river & a good aerial shot

Chelsea, it is wonderful to hear about your country and where you live. I would like to visit Greece someday.

Macy-Moo, thanks for the info on your neck of the woods.

I so enjoy experiencing different cultures, and learning about them.

I love learning of the various countries and cultures and seeing the pictures from someone who actually lives there. It is even very interesting to learn about different parts of your own country. I especially enjoy a person telling about their locality in their own words and from their own perspective and the things they see and do which is interesting to them.

I can definitely agree to Perth being an isolated city since most of Australia's capital cities are on the West Coast. Perth is a really beautiful city.
I watched a bit of Oprah and saw the family that had a traditional taco weekend or something like that. I didn't know Australia was known for Tacos???? I'm not too sure about that. :?
I know we can throw REALLY GOOD Barbie Party's! (not talking about the doll) Though I don't eat red meat... I'm aiming to NEVER eat a lamb because I want a bedlington terrier when I'm older.... I know, I'm strange.
