Please help me figure out my dog's breed

Postby mikerod25 on Sat Oct 31, 2009 2:19 pm

Hi all my name is Michael and I'm from FL. About a year ago I rescued this beautiful puppy from the pound and he's very adorable. The question is I have been researching for a very long time and still have not confirmed his actual breed. He is a mix and he looks like a pitbull but I know he is not a pure bred pitbull he looks like he has something else in him. If anyone can help me please do not hesitate to reply any suggestion or advise is greatly appreciated. THANK YOU

I don't think he is a pitbull but that is just my totally uninformed opinion. I would think a pit would be wider through the body. There are lots of different bully-type dogs - like in this 'find the pitbull' game. http://www.pitbullsontheweb.com/petbull/findpit.html Your vet might have an idea.

I have two sisters that I think are pit mixes, but they could have lab or even shar-pei in them. Who knows? I am curious about them but in the end it makes no difference.

If you live somewhere where pitbulls are not allowed, then he is definately a . . . visla mix!

Looks like a mix of pit bull and some type of hound.

I think he looks like he might have some pit in him, some lab, and maybe some kind of shepherd. His body really looks like a lab's body, but his face is more pit-like. I thought maybe shepherd too because of the darker areas on his face.

We also have a rescue and most people thought she was a Australian Shepherd mix, so we went online and ordered a dog DNA kit. Most are around $50 and it's as simple as a swab with their q-tip and a prepaid mailer. We got the results in 2 weeks and she has 7 different breeds in her DNA and NO Aussie!! She is 1/3 Afghan Hound and some Saluki and 5 other breeds of less than 10%. It's nice to know exactly (or not quite) what kind of mix she is.

Am I mistaken here, or is it true that DNA tests for dogs aren't completely accurate? This boy most definitely has some Staffordshire Bull terrier or Pit Bull Terrier in him. He's beautiful, no matter what breed. I see German Shepherd Pit Bull there. The dark markings are sort of a Siberian Husky shape, the sort of point that comes over the top of his head reminds me of Husky markings or GSD markings, but he looks like pure Pitty other than the fact he's not as bulky. :)

I'd say you're boy looks like a ridgeback mix. He reminds me of a dog on one of my other forums named Bello. :)

In the find the pitbull game I got it on the first try. I do love my APBTs. :)

Jeez, Amber, I was just about to post "Rhodesian Ridgeback" and you beat me to it!! I do love Champ's pitty ears, though.

This picture should help you see the ridgeback resemblance.

That is a very strange looking Rhodesian Ridgeback. Maybe it's the angle the picture is taken at.
