Of the members that have Labradors- how many of you have allergies or skin issues?

Emma (my Granda's Lab RIP) never had any skin problems that I am aware of. Does Maddie?

Hershey hasn't had any allergies or skin problems. But she's still a puppy so it could happen in the future.

My bLack lab doesnt have any skin problems or allergies. But he does have a very sensitive stomache. Even if he eats A LOT we have to keep him on diet food because if we switch him back he throws up or worse. the other end.
But my mix that is part lab has allergies and VERY bad skin problems. But her other half is collie so i dont know what breed she gets it from.
hope that helped a little

Labrador Retriever Excitement

Postby Hersheypup on Thu Jun 18, 2009 7:17 pm

Hey all you other high-energy lab lovers out there! I got a question.

As you see by my avatar and name, I have a chocolate lab named Hershey! She's 8 months now.

I was wondering if any of you Lab lovers have advice on how to get Hershey more exercise. I know walking is the #1 best thing to do, but are there any games or anything you play with you Lab to stimulate the brain and get them working out???

Thx! :D

I have a Border Collie mixed with Lab, so maybe I can suggest a few things. You might try playing frisbee, or ball outside. Sadie has a large ball with cutout holes all over it, made of softer rubbery material. She loves to play with that, and its easy for her to pick up with the open holes. Hope this helps a little.

I take my extremely energetic, impossible to wear out deerhound cycling with me. I have an attachment on my bike that has a pole that contains a sprung lead with a clip to attach to his collar. It's called a walky dog. We get on with it very nicely. I built up our excercise level gradually because unlike running off the lead he has no say in whether we stop to rest or slow down. Loki loves it and now sets off at a gallop as soon as we get to the road. In fact recently he was so keen to get to a terrier bitch being walked ahead of us, that he towed me uphill. Not a good idea when he's pulling from his collar. The only thing I would add about this idea is that it's probably best to wait until your dog is older and her bones are more developed.

I recently had to find a new home for my cream lab mix, Duke. The reason of his rehoming was because he was too energetic and would get bored and chewed up my old fence, internet cables, and power cords. My family also had to move and I knew he deserved a better life then where I am now....anyways I'm rambling lol. The only thing he would spend a good thirty minutes or so doing other than running around was this cool little toy we got him. It was a cube with a hole to put some dog food pieces in then you twist it and in order for the food to come out the dog would have to shake it around a bit. Good times watching him with that thing! :)

Re: Allergies : stopped giving yearly vaccines - i have my choc. lab & the other lab/rottie mix blood titered - they only get vaccinated when they're blood levels show they are getting low on immunity. they also eat food with NO grains - i shop specialty pet food store. Orijen and Wellness Brands. stay out of the grocery store for pet food. at the very least stay away from corn based products. my previous lab had allergies big time - these changes helped - along with giving her fish oil and a good supplement. we also found an accupuncture vet who used chinese herbs - that worked well for her also - she was with me til 14.5 yrs ! Exercise: walk walk walk - frisbee, swim, throw the ball, walk walk walk, hide and seek, hide the treat "find it". make a small agility course using PVC pipe for jumps. spend 5 minutes 2 or 3 X a day for obedience training/ teach a new trick (using positive techniques) - that works their brain !
