Jack Russell Terriers

Postby rexandbaby on Fri Apr 10, 2009 12:40 pm

Country of Origin: Great Britain

History: The Jack Russell Terrier takes its name from the Reverend John Russell who bred a strain of terriers for working fox in Devonshire, England in the mid-to-late 1800's. The Jack Russell Terrier today is very much the same as the original terrier John Russell bred.

Physical Description: The Jack Russell Terrier is a small to medium size, sturdy, and muscular dog. It has a flat skull and black nose. The almond-shaped eyes are dark and the small, V-shaped ears fold forward. It is well-balanced with a small chest and straight legs. Its short tail is carried erect. There is a short, smooth, or broken coat. There is always a minimum of 51 % white on the body, with tan, black, and brown markings.

Height: 10 to 14 inches, depending on which Kennel Club.
Weight: 10 to 17 pounds depending on height.

Temperament: This is a very assertive, loyal, keen, and active dog with a great deal of intelligence and a strong work drive. It is often called a big dog in a small body.

Activity Level: High

Best Owner: The Jack Russell requires a terrier-experienced owner with an active, outdoor lifestyle. It does poorly in apartments and is better suited to suburban or rural life.

Special Needs: Attention, exercise, job or activity, socialization, training.

Possible Health Concerns: Eye problems, deafness, Legg-Perthes disease, luxating patellas.

Baby is my first JRT, and I find that they are compatible with training GSDs. My two get along great and they enjoy a lot of the same games and jobs.
I love my dogs, they keep me focused!

Thanks for the info !
I always liked the Jack Russel only because of their energy, which was compacted into those little bodies !
I love all the Terriers. :)

i have two jack russells. i have always had two at a time. they are the best little dogs one could have. i have a problem with my female right now though. she has totally dug up the back yard. that's not the problem however. the problem is that when digging, she also barks at the hole she has dug. even if nothing is in the hole, she barks at it. so i have a question--why does she bark at these empty holes?

She is trying to scare whatever rodent that is in her mind out of the hole. Or, trying to tell you, that she is doing what she was bred for.

Baby's father went down a woodchuck den and got stuck down there. But, thanks to his barking, they found him although it did take a day, as he was quite far from their house!

Nope, not really, I tried putting her poop in the holes, and she would leave those holes alone, even after I put the dirt back, but she just had to dig new ones. One thing I did teach her was to find mole hills, and dig there. That helped move the moles off of our property, and after heariing us complain, then when we praised for digging in the mole hills she kind of calmed about just random holes.
I like to garden, and when I need to dig a good hole, I tell her, "Help me, and she does, and then when it is deep enough, I say, "Good Job! and I give a treat. She watches what I plant, then she tries, (unsuccessfully) to help me put the dirt back.

Of course, she is 9 now, and this has taken a lot of interaction. So, I can't help with a quick fix, they are JRTS!!!

i've been given the advice to put red pepper in the holes, but i haven't done that. we still have years (hopefully) of digging to get through, as one pup just turned four and the other will soon be two. so it would be nice to find a way to get this behavior curbed. i have to laugh now when my female digs because i'm thinking about your response that she may just be announcing to the world that she's digging...

Of course, you could make them a digging area, with play sand, but I was too lazy to bother.
