Queensland Heeler

Postby menrog on Mon Aug 17, 2009 9:23 pm

so happy to find this site and I'm sure to use it often for advice. I have a queensland heeler 10 mos. old neutered. some of my main concerns are his out of control behavior. He barks orders and I'm not sure how to handle it. I have recently began putting him outside alone and he does hate it, but then I hate doing that because I dont want him thinking the backyard is a punishment for him. He is true to his breed and dislikes being seperated from us for any length of time. So then another question, if we are to leave for the day is it ok to leave him alone or taken to be boarded? Just a couple of many questions I have.

my mom has 2 queensland Heelers and have grown up with them I feel I can offer some advice.
You put him out side when he brks commands? if you do this he WILL think the back yard is punishment. Try teaching him a Quite command so that when he barks you can say quite and he'll stop. =our 2 heelers don't bark orders, and only bark when they hear someone is home. How long do you plan on being gone? do you have any friends that could check on him? if your backyard is safe and he can't escape leave some water, food and some treats if you leave for the day see if someone can check on him. If you don't feel safe doing it, Board him. I have 2 dogs and when we go for the day we have someone check on them if it's a long period of time, if it's just like a work day they are both kenneld in the house becuase we dont' have a secure backyard. I've boarded my golden before, but only when going out of town for a few days and didn't have anyone to watch her. she loved it. I've never boarded my Aussie pup as I've never gone anywhere long enough to have to have him boarded. hope that this helps a little bit..

Great advice Marcos Mom!

I have owned Heelers and love the breed, they attach themselves to one owner usually and are very obedient. They require firm control as they can be very dominant. They are a high energy dog and require lots of exercise and stimulation or they will resort to bad behavior like constant barking, chewing or nipping.

Not knowing your dog I think it might be wise to follow Marcos Mom advice. Eventually you might be able to work up to leaving him, there is nothing fun about having to worry about your dog while you are away. A good peace of mind is knowing that someone is checking on him and then you can relax and enjoy your day away.
