Catherine, may I suggest you pose your Grooming Question in a different Section. The "Health & Care" Section might be a better fit, and you may even find some other helpful suggestions.

One of our long time, well reputed members was a Breeder of Siberian Huskies for many, many years. If you wish to start a thread in the "Health & Care" Section regarding the maintenance of a Sibe, he may well come along and give you some of the most valuable information you could ever have. Be sure to title your thread something to the effect of "Grooming a Siberian".

I will send him a personal message after you start a thread, or add to an existing one. He was very successful at Breeding and Showing, so he knows all there is to know about Grooming (and even obedience!). He is "Gold" to this site.

Your enthusiasm is lovely! Once you find your way on this site, which you are clearly doing already, there is a treasure trove of information as well as many wonderful friends to be made.

Just thought I'd add in my pup, and ask one question thats been nagging at me. I saw you live in the Dayton area - I live there too! Anyway onto my question, do you have any obedience trainers that you would recommend for my 14 week pup? I'm fearful of running into a trainer that will choke or kick Yuki because of her stubbornness, so I'm trying to find a good, reputable trainer that uses positive reinforcement and will be patient and understanding with my pup. The main reason I want to do obedience is because I feel it will help us bond (she's quite attached to my other dog but not as much to me) and I'm hoping to get into some agility with her later on so communication is essential. Since you live in the area I was hoping you might know a couple people, if not I'm sorry to ramble on XD

Richard is our go to guy on Sibes, he may know someone. He doesn't come on a lot, be patient. I am postive OB trainer, wish I could help you! I have worked with several Sibes with good results. The biggest thing you need to work on now is Recall. I can't stress that enough with the breed. They always want to know what is on the other side of the fence or mountain, so walk off leash with her in a secured fenced area and change direction constantly. When she changes direction with you....reward, reward and reward! Remember, as she ages Sibes can rarely be trusted off leash. Sibes love to pull, it's in thier breeding. A Easy Walk harness with the chest ring works great!

If you live in the Dayton aerea I would reccomend the Gem City Dog Training Club,my XOH was once president and my OH was one of the instructors.I did my obedience training there and finished a number of obedience titles in both the US and Canada,all with Siberians.

The club stays up to date with current training methods and YOU will handle your own dog ( they will teach you how ).
As well as basic and advanced obedience the club offers classes in agility,rally and confirmation (breed showing). The cost is much less than individual private trainers and YOU learn how to train dogs..The instructors are club members who have lots of experience and volunteer their time...Once you have finished two classes you may apply for membership if you wish

Thank you both! Kian, I have been working on recall since the day I got her, and I can still say I don't trust her off leash in an un-fenced area, and never will. But I know accidents happen, and I'm always afraid that my mom's gonna let her slip by the front door and she'll be gone, or she sees a squirrel and pulls so hard I lose the leash, so I'm hoping all this training will help if we have an emergency! Nileska, thank you for the recommendation! I was actually looking at them because some lady had mentioned them at the pet store, but I wasn't sure what their training was like. I really want to start on agility with Yuki once she's a year old, so it will help to do her obedience and then learn about agility while I'm already there Although Yuki will probably be the sibe running around like a mad-dog instead of doing the course lol!

Yuki is the classic Siberian beauty (she WILL grow into those ears ). If you have AKC registration papers you can enter any type of sanctioned competition offered.If you do not you can still apply for a limited registration which will permit you to enter her in any type of performance event but not breed competition...See AKC rules to apply.

Gem City usually has beginners class the first hour and advanced the second hour.Contact them for times and dates.I suggest that you go and observe to see how the training is done. Everyone is expected to practice what they have learned in class daily. You would actually only be in class one hour each week....Yes visitors are wellcome but leave your pup home.

As you know you have a natural born escape artist it is good to have your pup microchipped (be sure to register it)

She has full AKC registration, I registered her the day I was given the papers from the breeder. And I forgot about micro chipping her, thank you for reminding me! My eskimo was micro chipped when I got him but I had forgotten Yuki wasn't.
