Cairn Terriers

Postby CairnsofDoyle on Sun Dec 13, 2009 10:46 am

Hi- I didnt know what the right place for this would go, so I just posted here. I havent introduced myself so I'll just say quickly, Im Rae and next Monday Im getting a Cairn Terrier puppy, we have gotten most of the supplies, but i do have a question. I know the grown size of a Cairn Terrier but what would be a good size kennel/crate for him? I dont know 'exactly' how big he'll be so any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

I am not a dog professional but I have had Cairns as long term house guests. They are wonderful, intelligent and fun dogs. Very loyal and easy to train but with an independence that will try you at times. They don't get very large and a small crate with about 16" height and ~20" long. HAVE A GREAT TIME WITH YOUR PUP!

Get the size you'll need when your puppy is full grown. Enough room for a fully grown cairn to stand up straight turn around and stretch. This will be too big for your puppy so either buy one with a divider or cut a cardboard box and wedge this in as a divider. If the crate is too big your puppy will use one end to sleep and one to pee in.

Hello,

My boyfriend and I just got two Terrier Shih Tzu mixed puppies this past weekend for Valentine's Day and my birthday. These two seem to have a lot of terrier in them. While I am used to high energy dogs, I do have some "terrier" specific questions to see if anyone else can relate!

These two seem to have small man syndrome. We introduced the pups to my sister's 80 pound VERY GENTLE older dog and the two puppies started barking excessively. At one point, they got the old dog cornered and he just laid down. Does anyone know what we should do to introduce the puppies to larger dogs? It is important to us that we get them socialized as much as possible. What should we do when they are barking at other dogs like this?

We do plan to start puppy Kindergarten soon and after they receive their final booster vaccines next week, we'll be introducing them into doggy daycare.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Liz

Welcome to the DP, Liz. However, there is no need to post the same comment/question in two seperate threads!
