doxies

Postby doxiemommy on Fri Jan 15, 2010 7:11 pm

Hi everyone! I am new here! I really enjoy reading different topics and answers! Here's my question: I have read a lot about being careful with dachshunds because of their elongated spines. You know, watching the jumping and going up and down stairs and such. I am a new puppy mommy....my first puppy as an adult. And, Harper is a miniature doxie. He loves to run and be frisky.....hopping around and flying up and down the deck stairs. BUT, I don't want him to get hurt.....I have read a lot about the kind of injuries doxies can get because of their elongated spine. When we took him to the vet to start his vaccines she said that as long as he was in good health we should not worry and just let him be a puppy. I trust her, and believe that she's right, but am just wondering what other doxie parents have to say. :?:

I have a mini too. He is a doll.

My vet told me that he is NOT supposed to jump, go up or down stairs or do anything where he could hurt his back. I have to carry him on stairs. Not convenient.

Sadly, Dachshunds are not my favourite breed. I've never met one that didn't try to bite me, often succeeding! I can see the appeal, and their owners are some of the most devoted, but they are not for me...

Not that that has anything to do with your question. If it was me, I would contact a breed group. Breed groups are a bunch of people who are owners/fans of one specific breed. They will know the answers to these questions, often more than your local vet, as they have more experience with your specific breed. Rescue groups might be able to help, too.

Good luck to you!

I am also a first time dachshund owner.. well, a miniature. The vet told me to be careful with letting my puppy jump, but she jumps constantly.. off the bed, off the couch, in general for toys. My vet said to do the best I can but to also realize the quality of my puppies life and to realize that you can't completely stop them. I think having puppy stairs would help as far as getting on and off the couch.

Hi all....dachshunds are notorious for having bad backs. I've heard more than one story of a dachshund jumping from a bed and breaking it's back. Stairs are dangerous because they can fall down them and get hurt. Same with jumping, they can bend wrong and land wrong and get hurt. Even thier cute little tower sits can be hard for them. So yes, it's best to discourage or closely monitor and help with these activities. Easier said than done with this fearless breed!

Dachshunds are also notorious chow hounds and often times overweight. Being over weight can add to their back problems. It is really important to maintain a dachshunds weight and keep them lean and trim.

Personality wise, dachshunds are not for everyone. They are independent and bold, clever and smart and incredibly stubborn. (In my experience, can be biters when they don't get their own way or are startled!) I once read Dachshunds believe the world revolves around them. They believe you belong to them, not that they belong to you. They are loving and love to lick and or sit on your lap and be near you. Most dachshunds are burrowers and love nothing more than tunnel down into a blanket.

They can be either a standard or miniature sizes and can have either smooth, wire-haired, or long-haired coats. They can be single colored, multi-colored, dappled, or brindled.

Well said, I am also a first time Daschund owner, but i have had expeirence with stubbern, independant breeds before, personaly im not a bit fan of Daschunds but i do love my little guy to death, i wouldnt let him go up and down the stairs either my friends broke its back and his hind quarter was paralyzed, so he has wheels now. Daschunds were proven in a study with over 200 dogs from each breed, to be the biggest biters out of all the dogs breeds, with a 21% chance of biting a stranger, chihuahuas came in second and jack russels third, doxies are very devoted to there owners though, i know my mini doxie would not hesitiate to protect me if he was put in the situation.

I have 2 doxie girls. One will be 3 and the other 2 this spring. I try not to let them jump down from the sofa or bed but sometimes it's to late. Especially for the younger one. Gabby is very energetic and jumps all over the place. Especially when it's meal time. She does flips. Yes definitely love to snuggle under the covers. My oder sister has 2 and my younger sister has 1. You should see when we all get together. 5 wiener dogs. It's so amusing. Good luck with your pups. Cyndy

this is the only thing i dont beleive, daschunds are just very stuborn, and i think alot of it is because they are a smaller breed most of them get spoiled by the owners so they think there the boss  . Daschunds are very tenacious little dogs, but you have to be to do what they were bred for. If anyone doesnt know they were bred to sniff out Badgers and go into the holes after them, they were bred with a personality of a pit bull in the way that they will NOT back down from a fight. They were bred to go down in after the badger and fight to the death, and bring it out if they killed it. Many daschunds today arent as strong as they were before but they still have the tenacious personality. They are huuuuge cuddle bugs though my doxie will climb up in my lap and push his head under my chin, he'll do that to knew people to once hes gotten used to them.

I never imagined getting a dachsund because I had heard that they can bite, are stubborn, etc. However, I do not regret laila coming into our lives at all. She is the friendliest dog I have ever had. We socialized her with lots of different people and dogs from a young age and she will go up to any stranger with her tail wagging and nearly laying on the floor. She can be stubborn with me sometimes, but I just reinforce with her who is boss and I keep being patient and training with her. She is very intelligent and there isn't a single time I haven't been able to get her to play with me. She is an all around great dog and I have never seen her even try to nip at anyone.

I had a mini growing up, and she was a great dog. We got her from my uncle who moved overseas when she was young, I was around 5 years old. My dad taught her some tricks (play dead, roll over, to run in a circle). In the whole time we had her (she died when I was 20) she only ever tried to bite twice (and they were well deserved). She did have a bad back a couple of times over the years, I remember once in particular that she yelped if you walked near her (I guess she was frightened of you touching her in case it hurt), but when we took her to the vet he gave her some kind of injection (can't remember what it was as it was so long ago).

She was a good watch dog, barking to let us know if someone came up the driveway (we lived on 5 acres). As she got older, it was when they knocked on the door, then when they opened the door, then when she was really old, when she realised someone new was in the house after they had been visiting for half an hour!

As she got older if young kids came to the house and were annoying her, she used to go and hide under the chairs where they couldn't get to her, or come sit on our laps.

I know that certain breeds have certain tendencies, but she was a fantastic dog and we were very sad when she went to the big kennel in the sky.
