American Eskimo Pup Size

Postby tvyhovsky on Thu Jan 10, 2013 7:20 pm

We are bringing home our standard Eskie in March. She will be 10 weeks old. I am wondering about how big to expect her to be at that time. I have only ever had Golden Retrievers before and I want to make sure I show up with an appropriate sized collar, crate, etc...

The Breeder should supply you with all that information as the "due date" to coming home approaches. I'm sure you're very excited. I would think that your pup should be about the size of a Golden pup, give or take. Buy an inexpensive, adjustable collar, and a crate that perhaps can be sectioned as you know your pup will grow quickly.

Best of luck to you!

Congrats! Just some FYI: never leave a collar on a unattended puppy, they aren't use it and could get a lower jaw in it trying to chew it.

If you have a crate left over from the Goldens it would be more than adequate...As Deb has said you can block off the extra space until the pup needs it..

.When buying a new crate one should keep the dogs adult size in mind,,,DO rely on the breeder for advice they will help you get off to a good start...Most breeders will send a bit of the food, which the pup has been eating, home with the new puppy.

Be ready for an Adoreable but rascally little critter,my specialty is northern breeds (particularly Siberian Huskies)...I know them well....Good Luck !

The crate we bought was based on adult size with possibly a tiny extra bit of room. People just started telling me I needed a crate for her when she was a puppy because she would have too much room in the full sized crate. Which was when I realized I had no idea what sized little one we would be bringing home. This is my first puppy as an adult and I am so excited. Our last family Golden came home when I was 19 and he went to my internship with me everyday and this dog will also get to go to work with me everyday so I am trying my best to be a well prepared dog mom.

Thanks!!!

Since pups don't like to potty where they sleep the adult size crate needs to be blocked off so the pup has room to sleep comfortably but not enough room to make a mess and get away from it...Space can be controlled by inserting a cardboard box to occupy the excess room...No need to buy a different crate for each stage of growth..

Bear in mind that a young pup will need to go out frequently...Go out with her and praise,( well, throw a party ) when she does the job..IMPORTANT..then bring her right back in so that she knows what the trip was all about..Allways give her the opportunity to succeed...We anxiously await pictures :D
