I've been volunteering at this shelter for three months now and I am very impressed! It's a "low-kill" shelter - the only time an animal is put down is if it is dying anyway or if it is vicious and can't be adopted out. The local vets contribute care, even surgery, at low or no cost so dogs that come in sick or injured are taken care of right away. The dog kennels each have an outdoor run area, and the dogs get walked (we're out in the woods and there are miles of trails around us) twice a day. Plus usually there's one or two lying on the floor of the office or sitting in the reception area getting petted. We're gathering the resources to build a fenced play area where we can let them off leash and throw balls. The cats are in rooms and the ones that play nice get to have their cages open all the time; there are cat trees and toys and they get catnip sometimes! We're in touch with all the purebred rescues who usually come by within a day or two to collect any purebreds, plus there's an "old dog" ranch that often takes the oldtimers that are unlikely to be adopted.

I thought it would be heart-breaking to work here but the dogs are pretty happy (sadly, some of them find life at the shelter to be better than what they knew before - we had an abused red heeler who was so shy and scared at first, but after a week of fun walks and getting treats and pets from everyone, you could just see her thinking "hey - people can be nice!"). And they do get adopted out pretty quickly, as do the cats. Right now we're down to two dogs so are taking in some from the next county's shelter (which isn't nearly as nice as ours, so lucky for those dogs!)

People who have visited other shelters in the search for an animal are always very impressed with ours. I'm pretty proud of it.
Outside of a dog, reading is a man's best friend. Inside a dog, it's too dark to read.
