TICKS! ...make my skin crawl...

Postby oldie moldy on Wed Mar 13, 2013 8:21 am

My dog and I camp quite a bit once summer gets here. (it is coming, right?) I was reading up on all the tick born diseases, grim stuff. This last summer I started spraying my clothing and tent etc. with Permethrin; once dry it's safe and it really seems to work.

I'm able to go over Rose carefully to check for ticks but I'm wondering if anyone has any experience in a spray application of Permethrin to dogs? I was thinking about a strip starting along her spine at the base of the tail and extending about mid way up the backbone. We would go on a walk on lead, till it dries.

Any observations would be welcome!

Best Wishes, Rob

We don't have a huge problem with ticks and I check them good if we walk out in the hills. I have seen good results with Frontline and Advantix and I always suggest the waterproof one. Spraying your dog with a Permethrin base flea and tick would be a good idea as well, keep in mind it will need to be done everytime you go out.

I personally don't like to use chemicals unless I have to, if this turns out to be a bad tick year I would most certainly do want you are doing Rob. I would actually spray my dog throughout the coat and not just on the backbone, I don't think that would work.

It's good to protect yourself, tick borne illnesses are wicked for us and for dogs. I know this from personal experience, be protected!

Eurgh I hate them! We are very tick ridden here, I'm in the UK and where I used to live was near the "New Forest" which is tick land. My dogs' breeder, Colette, contracted Lyme Disease from a tick and I myself have had the odd one, you get used to it though and the 'don't brush into plants, lift your elbows, cover your ankles' deal has REALLY been drilled into me! Haven't had one for years now. Monty and Woody NEVER get them! They have Frontline used on them! Must be pretty good! My grandparents' collie gets them everywhere, sometimes on her eyelids :(

A tick twister is a must have!

I can't say anything about Permethrin as I've not used it, always used Autan because it's what my grandmother has always used and as I said, I haven't had a tick in years despite living in tick central! XD

Rob..We have had an extensive discussion about fleas, ticks and parasites.internal and external..My personal preference for a first line of defense is granulated Garlic from Springtime.com.This has worked for me but I live in the north temperate zone and we have winter freezes. The folks further south have to deal with a whole different class of critters. I know people in Florida who put stuff on their lawns that we wouldent touch up north. My major concern is to avoid poisoning the dog.

I forget where it is all located but about everything, good or bad, that you can put in or on your dog is covered..If .you want to try the Garlic you may find the critters don't find your dog tasty anymore. It takes a little while for it to build up but after a little while you schould find your pups bug free..Start with with a couple pinches mixed in the food and gradually increase the Dose,it doesn't take a lot.My dogs were on it year round..Don't be surprised if they develop a taste for Italian food and start hanging out at pizza parlours....Chao !

Richard, good to hear from you! Haven't seen hide nor hair from you since that big snow fall; was worried that big bump in the snowbank might be you!

Garlic....hmm..I'll give that a try. Brings "dog breath" to a new high or is it low ?

Sorry to be a blockhead but I looked and can't find that "miss chit chat"....not a big deal but I so enjoy talking back and forth when Richard went missing (to my feeble mind) I was watching for him.

Signs of our times: in the small town where I live, when someone passes their people put up a notice on the door of the post office often with a photo and the few usual facts. I've been noticing for some time now the birth dates are often later than mine. Hmmm....

And then there's the Neptune Society; they send me these little love notes in the mail every so often. At first glance I thought it was some sort of underwater conservation group, maybe that french guy...Jacques Cousteau or somebody like him. Nope, it's a pre-paid cremation plan. I feel fine, wonder if they know something I don't. But on the other hand maybe they don't think they'll be called on any time soon? Who knows? I'll bet they don't get many customer complaints.

Best Wishes, Rob

I have had such a problem with my dogs getting ticks this year. Almost every time they go outside, they come in with a tick. I have tried walking them in different areas, keeping them off the grassy areas, they are just awful. My dogs are short hair and have a tight undercoat, I have never had a problem with ticks before and my dogs are 11 and 7 years old. Anybody else experience this in Southern Calif?

Not me,I live in SW Ohio....Actually I have traveled California extensively from Eureka to Long Beach and nary a tick....As I have said before,I add granulated garlic to my dogs food and it seens to repel fleas and ticks.....The horse people have found it handy to repel flies as well....As an extra benefit it also discourages internal parasites.

I get my garlic from an outfit called Springtime Inc and it comes in any size from 2 1/2# can to 50# bucket....Dogs like it and no it dosent give them lasting pizzabreath....Use only a little to start out,a couple healthy pinches per meal will do.You can allways increase it a bit later....Dosent give your horse pizzabreath either but you wont need the fly spray anymore.... ....Bonus,you can sprinkle a bit on your lasagnia if you wish,it's table grade.
