Trifexis

As a loving mom to a rottweiler and a chihuahua, I am very meticulous about my pets' care. I thought that I was protecting them by putting them on Trifexis, per my vet's recommendation. I was informed that it was the only pill they would need to take to control fleas, ticks, heartworms, and parasites.
Sadly, I did not read the box carefully, and for the past year, I assumed they were protected, since I saw no fleas or ticks.
They are both indoor dogs, and are not at high risk for fleas and ticks anyway. Last week, while we were on vacation, my rottweiler became very ill while she was at the sitter's house. She was brought to a nearby animal hospital, and we rushed home. We transferred her to our local vet school teaching hospital, and after nearly dying, she underwent surgery for an abcess today. During surgery, two dead ticks were removed from her (one near the site of the abcess). I could not have been more confused as to how this could have happened.
Turns out, Trifexis is not for ticks. The vets at the teaching hospital have also told me that they have seen many cases of dogs that took Trifexis that had lowered immune systems, and they suspect Trifexis may be to blame.

Trifexis is a strong one, some dogs don't well on it or other pest control products. It's good to always research any product that goes on your dog. Trifexis doesn't control ticks from what I know about it. Your vet should have told you that as it is by script only.

Frontline is suppose to stop the flea and tick cycle and be waterproof, others are different. Trifexis isn't a popular one in my area, I think Nezza has had more experience with it. She will come around and answer what she knows. See her thread: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=7637

Thank you, Kian. Unfortunately, i do not have any experience at all with Trifexis. This product is fairly new and came around after i had left my work as a vet tech a couple years ago.

To dlarrington, i'm so sorry to hear that you are going through this. These meds are tested and retested, yet there is always an exception and it sounds like your pup was an exception. Did you try this product just based on your vets recommendation? Most of the pharm companies will reimburse you for any expenses you may incur as a result of your pet becoming sick from their product.

These days, the only product i recommend is Frontline and Frontline Plus. It's a tried and true product with the smallest reported adverse reactions. Unless your dog has an allergy to Fipronil (which is RARE), it is the best product available. And i've used them all...on cats and dogs. Working in an animal hospital, we are given many many free samples of new products to try and still Frontline comes out on top. You can buy generics now (PetArmor, Pronyl, Fiproguard) at lower cost but it's the same active ingredient as Frontline. If your concern is heartworm, i would go with Heartguard. But remember, you must have your dog test negative for heartworm BEFORE you give any kind of heartworm prevention.

Douglas was on Trifexis since three months ago. Last month he vomited after we gave him his dosage, but thought it might have been something else that upset his stomach (new munchy sticks maybe). Yesterday, however, he vomited again 2-3 hrs after taking Trifexis for about 1 hr. He emptied his stomach and is now lethargic (he's never lethargic). We're changing him over to Revolution next month.

I have tried frontline plus and that worked well for my dogs since two years. The other thing is my pets are now much more safer than earlier as I have started taking care of their surroundings and kept it clean.

In a short time all three dogs will be on Trifexis. We have been successful with it for several months now. Daisy's Interceptor will no longer be available for purchase and I have used Advantix as a flea preventative for many years. It will be easier if all three are on Trifexis for heartworm and flea preventative. Levon was receiving Advantage Plus but it smelled bad. Let's hope it is good for all three dogs!

Gave my 12 week old 10lb brittnay spaniel Trifexis for the first time last night. OMG after about 2 hours after she took the pill she became drunk like unable to stand eyes rolling back she didnt vomit or diaherra she went to sleep .After reading internet posts i decided to wait till morning thankfully she was fine in the morning but i was really worried.
There does seem to be more then the usual rare side effectS WITH THIS DRUG i WILL BE HAVING A TALK WITH THE VET!

Every one has been doing well so far on Trifexis, no side effects and no fleas. Happy with this product.

Well here's another reason to change my vet -.- I had my 7 month eskimo on trifexus and when I asked my vet what to give my 13 week sibe on her visit, she suggested to give her trifexus as well. Thankfully Yuki was never sick on it, and it worked perfectly fine for her, but why couldn't my vet warn me trifexus may be too strong for her or even offer me another suggestion since she was so young. -le sigh-

TRIFEXIS guys, please...not Trifexus. I know it might sound trivial, but it makes you, the owner, look smarter for knowing the product your dogs are on.

I find FRONTLINE PLUS works well for my Badger,have yet to see a flee on him,however the treatment stopped working for Mimi some time ago and my Vet changed her to COMFORTIS .As she is such an allergic little dog,i find it works well with little or no scratching now though still licks her paws.However Comfortis doesent keep Ticks away.

If your pup does experience side-effects of Trifexis (Douglas vomited everywhere), it might be worth your while to give the pharmaceutical company a call. I first called our vet who directed us to the Trifexis website. The people at Trifexis were very willing to work with me, and mailed three replacement dosages to the vet hospital that then gave us a refund for the three months of puke that we had to clean up

I realize that getting a refund from an adverse reaction may also depend on your individual vet hospital.
