Excessive eating???

Postby loco11 on Sat Jan 12, 2013 6:19 pm

My new puppy...about 3 1/2- 4 months old..seems to already have an eating disorder! I feed her twice a day (blue buffalo large breed puppy). She inhales her food to the point that she chokes and coughs...more so in the evenings when all the dogs are being fed. We have three other dogs and we feed them all at about 4pm eastern. This evening when I fed them ...Isabeau...aka Izzy ...coughed, choked and continued to try to eat her food. Then as I watched her midsection seemed to bloat up. I rushed her outside.....where she puked into the snow. Then unbelievably ...she picked thru the snow till she'd found all the food. Pretty sure this isn't a great behavior. She's a yellow lab.

Buy a bowl that has the dividers or a maze in it, those are made to slow fast eaters down. I own the maze one and it works wonders.

Feed her smaller amounts 3x's a day. Puppies should eat 3x's a day not twice.

I think when you follow Kians advice you will see a great improvement, puppies that age must eat at least 3X daily..I would even throw in a bedtime snack.

.One thing I would like to add...DO NOT! feed her in the presence of your other dogs for the time being. :P

It's more likely the dog not the breed. Allie is a fast food eater and she is a Aussie. Excellent add Richard!!

Puppies should be fed a few smaller meals a day. You should break the servings into at least three daily feedings. She may be filling her belly too quickly and that can lead to big problems. Remember, puppies have a very small stomach and can only handle so much food per serving.
