Help new puppy crying and howling all night

Postby haspin on Wed Jan 09, 2013 8:34 am

Hello,

I'm new on here and this is my first post. I have just recently purchased a new puppy a 10 week old Dogue De Bodeaux Ruby. She is stunning and such a loving little thing. I have also have two older dogs one 10 year old black Lab and a 6 year old ting Staff.

My trouble comes mainly at night time. She is in her pen first of all in my sons room (as we have a wood floor in there) then we tried down stairs in the kitchen with the other dogs and finaly in our bed

The reason behind this she will not stop howling, crying or thrashing at her pen. As she is already big she has the power to move the sides of the pen so we are in the process of getting a crate. We each night we left her for upto 2 hours crying until the point my where my children are crying because they can't sleep and they have school in the morning. Even after lying at the side of our bed she howls. The only way for her to sleep and be quite is if she is snuggled right next to me.

At the minute sleeping in my bed is not that bad but soon she will be massive and weighing around 9.5stone.

Apart from the sleeping she is paper trained loving not nipping and only tries to pinch my slippers so I can not fault her.

I have also tried leaving my top I have worn in her pen but this does not seem to help. Any help you can give me would be very much appreciated.

One day at a time.....let her sleep with you since that makes her happy :D :D , worry about her size later after she gets used to her new surroundings, she is just a baby who is used to closeness, not solitary sleeping! Happy puppy! 8)

I'm no expert in puppy psychology but I tend to agree with Virgilsmom, let her in bed with you so everyone can get a good nights sleep for a change. When my older son was a not quite a year old I decide to give the "let them cry it out" tact a try and it was The Most Miserable night. It was the only time and after that he was back in our bed.It was so much better than the trauma of listening to that incessant wailing. He managed to grow up just fine!

I will be the voice of difference. I always keep my puppies in the crate next to my bed. I provide a old cotton tshirt I have slept in for comfort. I will put my fingers in the crate to remind the puppy I am there. One, two nights and they settle right down.

As she ages, she most likely will discover the end of the bed is a good potty spot and your best shoes chewed up while you sleep.

Give her something to comfort here, pups need something to chew on to fall asleep. Filled Kongs, bully sticks, munchie bones are all good.

Thank you for your replies. She is now sleeping at the bottom of the bed. She is so good however will not mess all night and waits until i take her downstairs on her puppy pad to mess.

All the family have bonded so good.

However my oldest dog Prince 10 (a big black lab) is still a little grumpy. They are fine sleeping together but if she goes near him during the day playing he growls at her and generally grumpy with her.

Do you think they will ever get on or is he too old now?

They will probably be best buds once the Lab has established all the ground rules and the puppy finds his place in the scheme of things. I am happy to hear bedtime is better :D . Best of everything to you and the whole family, sounds like you are doing great!

Thank you the lab is grumpy but hopefully will come round. The middle dog Mitzie (a small staff) is somewhat frightened of her but have sat back and they had a little play together. I can't wait for the puppy to go on her first walk. I hoping then all the dogs will play together. :)
