Jayme's Peru Pictures

Postby JaymeK on Fri Aug 27, 2010 3:27 pm

Helllooo. It's been a few weeks since I got back from peru, and I'm finally getting around to this. They aren't in order, but I'll try to give a little description of each!

Lauren and I at Machu Picchu- old Inca ruins
Image

Me at the Sun Gate--about an hour hike up a mountain with LOTS of stairs. Good workout! (at about 9,000ft here)

Boat ride to Ballestas Islands

Sea Lions at the Ballestas Islands
Image

Peruvian Boobies...I'm not even kidding, that's what they're called. haha
Image

The Nazca Lines flight- this is a picture of the 'hands'. The Nazca lines were created by the Nazca people a longgg time ago. They're grooves in the dirt with rocks piled around them. We took a small plane to see them and there were lots of tight turns, so everyone was feeling rather sick.

The astronaut nazca lines. (The most commonly accepted theory is that these pictures were used as a giant astronomical calendar)

Shanty town built up on mountains. I believe this is in..Cuzco.

Walking on Tequile island
Image

A funeral tower. Notice the stonework on the outside. The better the stonework, the more important the structure.
Image

Me by the funeral towers...This was in Puno.
Image

the salt 'mines.' each family owns 3-7 little plots. They are about 1 inch deep. They fill their plot with the very salty water running a little canal, then the water evaporates and you are left with salt. We walked along tiny trails made of rocks. There are SO many plots. They go farther down than the picture does.
Image

if your plot is on the bottom you have to walk all the way down there

Great pics Jayme!
I love the sea lions, they are so cute. And the Boobies, are they all girls? LOL!

The salt mine pics are very cool. The nazca lines are pretty amazing, and the funeral towers...well all of it really!
It looks like you had a great trip with plenty to see and do.

I bet Benson was happy as could be to have you back home.

Jayme, those are great pictures! I saw a show recently (with Jeff Corwin) on those salt patches and the families that run them. It was fascinating and then there you are!!!

Peru looks like a beautiful country. The history is amazing and very thought provoking. Did your Mum and sister have a good time as well?

I'm sure Benson was over the moon to have you back at home. I bet there was a "wiggle bum fest" that went on for days!

It was on the boat tour I learned about the peruvian boobies, I turned to my sister and said "did he just say boobies?!" I thought I had heard wrong! haha.

My mom and sister had a good time, but my sister's a bit of a weakling and was sick some of the time. Benson was hyper for about two days when I came back. And all my training that worked on him not jumping was thrown out the window, but I think it's okay for just that once. haha.
I'll try to put up a few more today.

The photos are great, Jayme! I love the ones of the Nazca lines. And someday I would love to see Machu Pichu. You are a very lucky girl!!

In the Galapagos, there is the Blue-Footed Booby. And they do have blue feet. A good friend took the cruise there and had loads of photos. And the Peruvian Booby is related. The name comes from the original word the Spanish called them that means "clown".

Jayme - great photos! I do hope you post more, this was a trip of a lifetime. We saw Boobies at Bird Island, we laughed at the name too! I look forward to seeing more photos.

just one more picture..i'm trying to see which ones i haven't posted that are good ones...

the backs of my legs after a day at Machu Picchu. The guides were calling them mosquitos, but these things weren't mosquitoes. They were tiny black flies..I was on a travel forum and saw someone mention 'sand flies' or 'sand fleas'. interesting because I didn't have any bites on my arms, just my legs. Over 100! They got worse the next day, and the next, and there are still marks on my legs! My sister and I had a few sleepless, itchy nights after machu picchu...
