Transport Assistance Needed!

Postby lynners on Tue Oct 26, 2010 9:19 am

Hi everyone,

we're working on transporting a dog from a non-profit in Tennessee up to my rescue in Ontario. We're hoping to bring Audrey up this weekend - transport has been delayed twice already because we haven't been able to fill the runs! We're still looking for volunteers for the following legs:

Saturday October 30th
Manchester TN - Nashville TN

Columbus OH - Mansfield OH

Sunday October 31
Erie PA - Fredonia NY

Fredonia NY - Buffalo NY

If you think you'd like to help, please PM me for details. Thanks!!

Details about Audrey:
18-20 month old, spayed Siberian Husky
approx 50 lbs, current on all shots (including rabies)
previously heartworm positive, has completed treatment successfully with no complications
microchipped
pleasant temperament

What a beautiful girl.

That is a great opportunity to be able to help a worthy cause and get some good karma. I hope you find some volunteers Lynners.

Thanks Tracy, I hope so too!

She's been living in a kennel at a vet clinic for at least 6 months. When her owners found out she was heartworm positive, they abandoned her there. I posted about her in the summer, actually!

She is very pretty. How do you find these dogs, that is such a distance.

Isn't there a rescue closer that could take her?

Unfortunately, the sending non-profit has not had any luck finding a home for her on their own.

Our rescue is unique in that we don't discriminate based on distance. We help whoever needs us most - and more often that is shelters and pounds south of the border, Ohio especially. We were connected with this particular non-profit when one of their members did a leg of transport for a dog that we took from a gassing pound in Georgia (Beamer!!). US shelters and pounds are so overloaded with young, happy, healthy dogs that 100 runs are being doubled up,and they have to make the decision to euthanize 20 at a time. Here in Ontario, dogs are typically in danger of being euthanized usually only when they have overstayed their welcome in the system (ie. there is no interest in being adopted) - an 11 run kennel will often still have 2 or 3 kennels open.

That is quite the network Lynners. It is sad to hear that about that in the U.S., have you found that to mainly the southern U.S.?

That is very sad lynners. I didn't realise the situation was quite that dire. I really hope you get the drivers you need.

Since I've been involved with this rescue, the furthest we've rescued from is Georgia. Other states we have taken dogs from include Kentucky and Tennessee. We most frequently help out a few pounds in Ohio. We had lined up to take some dogs from a gassing shelter in North Carolina, however transport fell through and the volunteer contact ended up being totally loopy (which isn't that uncommon in rescue). There are humane societies and rescues here that pull and transport Louisiana dogs and market them as Katrina dogs.

I'm not sure what it's like on the west coast or the more central or southern US - it could be that we are too far away and just don't hear about those dogs.

Part of the reason we help Ohio out so frequently is that there is an amazing volunteer in that area who coordinates transports of sometimes 20+ dogs. All the legs are driven by volunteers in their own vehicle. It's much easier to help when someone else is taking care of the logistical details for us!

How many years ago was Katrina, that is just crazy. It's seems better here in the west, there are two shelters here, I will make it a point to visit and see if I can help in anyway.

What sort of distances are each leg? Do the volunteers donate their fuel as well as time? That is a very worthwhile thing to do. Maybe I should look at doing something like that here. At present I couldn't afford the fuel. I could give the time and I have a suitable vehicle with the Deerie Mobile.

Legs tend to be approximately an hour in length - so I suppose 2 hrs or so round trip. Typically, volunteers donate their fuel. In the US, they are able to claim their gas/mileage on their taxes if they are volunteering for a 501c3 organization. We will offer to pay for fuel if we are incredibly desperate.

As for as I know, Tracy, the situation in the UK is no where near as bad as North America - thank goodness!

Lynners, if I still lived at home I would totally do the Fredonia-Buffalo run, as I pretty much grew up in-between them!! Audry is beautiful, by the way.

My friend is a foster mom for a Golden/Lab rescue here in VT. There is a guy who has a business called Animal Road Rescue. He spends his life driving down thru the southern US from Georgia, thru to Tennessee and Arkansas and drives back to New England, stopping in Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and ending in New Hampshire. He basically survives on charitable donations.

Golden Huggs brings up dogs almost every week. My friend drives down to NH to pick up the pups a few times a year to transport back to VT...about a 5 hour round trip. I am hoping to go with her the next time.

It never ceases to amaze me the number of dogs that come up to New England from down south.

The New England rescue that I am fostering with gets almost all of our dogs from Tennessee.
