Oregon is the same...very artsy! I love the Pacific northwest.
When I went to the coast, they had tsunami route signs...that's something you'd never see in Michigan! :o

This first bit I cobbled together from Wikipedia and a few other places.

“About Texada Island
Texada Island, the largest of the Gulf Islands, is located about 50 miles north of Vancouver at its southernmost tip and about 5 miles southwest of Powell River. It is 32 miles long and six miles wide at its widest and is separated from the mainland by Malaspina Strait. Surviving middens and fish weirs show that First Nation People spent time on Texada long before Europeans discovered North America. These People didn't have permanent settlements on the island, because an ancient legend says the island rose from the sea and will sink again one day.

The Sliammon name for Texada Island is Si'yi yen. Don Jose Navarez, a Spanish seaman sighted and charted the island in 1791. Spanish explorers also named the small island just west from Texada (Lasqueti). While Spain did not have much interest in this area, Britain became a dominant force in the Pacific Northwest. At this time there was little activity along the coast, apart from fur trading, whaling, and cutting a few spars for sailing ships. Blubber Bay, which is now the site of the BC Ferry terminal was so named because it was used by whalers for the processing of their catches. Texada's modern history began in 1871, when iron ore was discovered on the northwest coast at Welcome Bay. That precipitated the boom of exploration on Texada .

Some time after 1877 marble was found, then in 1880 gold was discovered, where Van Anda is now and The Little Billie Mine began producing gold and copper. Logging has also been prevalent in this area during the late 1800s and 1900s. By 1898 Van Anda had become a boom town! People came from everywhere to live, work and spend their leisure time here. It boasted the only opera house north of San Francisco, had three hotels with saloons, a hospital, several stores and businesses, and an illegal distillery flourished in Pocahontas Bay supplying liquor to the United States during prohibition.

In 1910 the first of three serious fires completely destroyed the major buildings of Van Anda in only forty minutes. The optimism of the boom town led to rebuilding larger, more imposing structures - only to be destroyed by fire again in 1912. The third fire struck in 1917 leaving only Al Deighton's store which was saved by a bucket brigade. The building remains a fixture on the Van Anda waterfront today. Mining continued through the 20th century and today there are still a number of working limestone quarries on the island. The largest, located near the airport, ships out three million tonnes of limestone a year.

Today, Texada Island is largely a place where people come to to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and there are a variety of vacation rentals available. Many visitors spend their vacations here, returning in later years to retire in this peaceful community. The area boasts many lakes and hiking trails and most are accessible by car or 4 wheel drive.

There are many beaches accessible by land or water and beachfronts vary from large rocks to fine sand. You may also find a rock which can only be seen on Texada, " the flower rock" , If you find one please enjoy its beauty but leave it behind for the next person to enjoy.

Although much of the old logging roads have been reclaimed by nature you will still see signs of this history everywhere. Shelter point, located on the west side of the islands, still displays the remains of a once thriving logging area. There are 2 major population areas on the island, Van Anda on the east side and Gillies Bay on the west side. While not all services may be available on the island, most major amenities such as foodstuffs, hardware & gas can be purchased here.

A regular ferry service links Powell River and the main ferry terminal at Blubber Bay. The island also has two grocery stores, several specialty stores, a library, bank, gas station, elementary school, hotel, bed and breakfasts, bistro, and a museum and post office. Located near Gillies Bay, Texada Island also has an airport with a 3000' (900 m) paved runway for private aircraft and scheduled services. There are parks, forests, lakes, beaches and mountains. Parks include South Texada Island Provincial Park and Shelter Point Park.“

I’ve been here for almost 35 years, and Paul has been here his whole life. Texada is famous for more than just it’s history and mining. The Tilley sisters (Meg and Jennifer) lived here as young teenage girls, and my sister went to school with Jennifer, as she lets anyone know who will listen! *grin* I went to school here with Todd Duckworth, another not-quite-as-famous-as-the-Tilleys actor. Terry Jacks had a summer cabin in Blubber Bay years ago, and John Wayne (yes, THAT John Wayne!) used to park his yacht off Shelter Point Park every summer for a couple of weeks.

Texada is famous for a “special” green plant, that is known the world over as the best, so I’ve “heard”. *VBG!*

We, too, have a large "artsy" community, with many kinds of arts and crafts being produced. Texada is home to Amanda Martinson, a very talented watercolourist, and lots of other artists. Some work in glass, some in wood, some in other media. We also have a community theatre group who put on a show a couple of times a year. Not too bad for a population that hovers around 1000 people!

We have no predators here, so our deer are many. Because of the large population, they remain very small, and hunters are allowed to take three a year, instead of the two they are permitted in other areas. In addition to hunting, we have fishing, and lots of food for the collecting, such as mushrooms, clams, oysters, and other goodies. You would be hard-pressed to starve here!

We have four seasons, but they are mild. Fall and winter tend to blur into each other, as do Spring and Summer. We rarely have snow, and we are ill-prepared to deal with it. It rains here, a lot! But when it’s sunny, it’s beautiful, and not too hot.

If I could live anywhere else? Probably over on Vancouver Island. Same climate, but closer to shopping!! Although Arizona is rapidly becoming a favourite area for us. My nearest DPer is Lynner's heart, over in Naniamo, where we go several times a year, for shopping and the casino. Closest "whole" DPer might be Kris in SoCal, but I'm not sure. (sorry...)

This is a very interesting thread!
Phyrie, I had always pictured your island on the east side--Nova Scotia or somewhere in Lake Erie ( ). It sounds and looks beautiful.

I live in San Francisco--Bernal Heights, south-east-ish near the Mission District. I've learned that Bernal Heights was built up after the 1906 earthquake that destroyed most of the city. The workers that were re-building the city were housed here. It's on a very steep hill and they just kept building more houses on these steep little narrow, wind-y streets (as in not straight!) Very quaint with killer views of the city! There are coyotes on Bernal Hill!

This is a beautiful city, very dog-friendly--you can take smaller dogs almost anywhere except where food is served, of course! The weather is very different from what one might expect from California. Summers tend to be down-right cool. Ya want to swim? Better wait till October! It rains in the winter (with all the hills, I am so glad it doesn't snow!)

We San Franciscans are about to win the World Series (baseball)--have to admit I'm not much of a baseball fan, but, it's just about impossible to ignore --and that Tim Lincecum ( one of the pitchers) is absolutely adorable!

I've been to San Fransisco Janis. I loved it. The trolley buses, that one really winding road, the seafood, the bridge, the redwoods - all of it.

Phyrie, your area is beautiful! I wasn't sure exactly where you were located either. That has to be an amazing place to call home.

Janis I have a cousin who has lived in San Francisco for several years. He loves it out there too. I think I need to get together with his mom and plan a visit so I can see the area. I've always wanted to ride the trolley up and down the steep hill.

Yeah, the hills can be kind of like roller coasters! I scare my mother to pieces just driving around when she comes to visit. And, we've received tsunami warnings here, too!

Tracy, A long time ago, I was in England. It is so magical! In the United States we think buildings are old when they reach 100! We've got some family in London & Wales and a lot in Ireland (the majority of my family is Irish) that we keep in contact with. I'm not sure I've been to your little spot of England, though. Where are you planning to move?

Oregon is the same...very artsy!

RJM: My daughter lives in Portland, OR and really loves it. All that rain was the only thing that got her out of her jeans and into a skirt (all that wicking of water up her legs :o )

Kwak: I loved Knott's Berry Farm!

Oh, and Sadie G, you and your aunt (?) should definitely come on down!

Janis, I have to tell you that San Francisco is one of the places on my list of destinations I have yet to reach. It is such an interesting city with its China Town and its rich history. I also wish to go to Alcatraz.

I'm really enjoying this thread and reading all about everyone's place of residence, and their interpretation of it.

Phyrie do you have picture of the "flower rock"? Sounds very pretty and unique to the island. I could wander that beachline for a very long time, so pretty.

Janis my ex FIL lives in Marin County, I enjoyed seeing the city and of course the Golden Gate Bridge. I do have a picture of me hanging off a trolley, it wasn't allowed so I had the Ex take the picture quickly. My ex FIL knew all the good places to eat in China Town which made it really fun.

The Republic of Ireland is where i live,...in County Westmeath which is one of the 26 Counties,..in the center of Ireland,..and close to Clonmacnoise which is shown on the map.
There are six more Counties in the North East,.. but they are under the rule of England.
Image

I live in the Town Of Athlone,..which is shown near the bottom left of this picture,..and live about 100 yards from the River Shannon,..and close to Lough Ree.

Image

Athlone gets a huge amount of tourists due to the many water amenities,...our population here in Town is only 15,500,..and the entire County has only 79,000,..it is a huge farming area,..breeding Cattle,Sheep and Horses,...there are many horses due to having a very flat area,..and of course the plains,..We have a Whiskey Distillery and a Tobacco Processing Plant.
The County is named after the historic kingdom of Mide,..and the town Castle was first built around the year ten hundred,...which is not very old as many of our ancient buildings were built around 360 AD.

I don't want to give too much away, but I live in Virginia in the United States. I think I'm the closest to Angie in West Virginia or Cher in NC. Virginia has tons of history and lots of different scenery to offer, such as the Blue Ridge Mountains, the James River, the capitol, Virginia Beach, and the downtown in my area is really old and also has lots of history.
