Must share my soccer excitement

Postby beach_angel05 on Sun Nov 14, 2010 11:10 pm

So a guy who I went to Middle and High School with, George John is on the FC Dallas MLS team! They're playing LA Galaxy right now and up by 3 pts to nil. He scored his first MLS goal just a little bit earlier and I am so happy for him! He's an amazing player and person all around! It's great to see him score, and in the playoffs no less! Check out a vid of him - He's number 14 (red-white striped jersey)

Congrats to George!!!

I'm excited for you! I know one of our DP members is an avid "Footy" fan and watches most of the UK matches, despite living in the US.

That is an exciting moment, especially when one knows the person. Thanks for sharing.

Chandra, I'm the avid footie supporter that O&H's Mum mentioned.

I don't watch MLS much...but congrats to your school friend! How awesome that he became a pro and beat the socks off David Beckham and Landon Donovan!!

I will try to make a point to watch the final to see your friend and I'll root for his team!!

Margie, good to see there's another avid soccer fan on here! Yes you should definitely catch the final if you can. It's the 21st of Nov at 8:30PM on ESPN (if you get that channel at all). It's really neat to see him play. When his team played our local team the Seattle Sounders, his family (who is VERY greek) and church all had 8x10 photos of his face from his prom picture and had it taped to popsicle sticks. It was funny to see a whole section filled with his face :)

I absolutely despise Landon Donovon, he comes off as a whiny bratty little kid to me. I have to say though I've loved David Beckham since he was on Man Utd. so I have a soft spot for him. But yes, I am totally stoked they beat LA! LA came into the match with the idea that since they were on their home turf and they have all these star players that they'd win. So when the final was 3-0 it was pretty great :)

Chandra, I have more channels than I know what to do with.

I'm a Newcastle United supporter so Beckham has never been one of my favorites.

Imagine looking up from the pitch and seeing your prom picture all over one end of the stadium!! Too funny...but how very special for your community that one of your own has become a sports star!!

I'm surprised that David Beckham is actually still playing any football. I thought he spent most of his time these days prancing about for the cameras.

LOL Tracy! He went to L.A. and apparently was on the bench for the entire time and being paid an outrageous sum of money to just "show up".

I like him until he opens his mouth to speak. I feel the same way about his wife.

I heard him in a recent interview and it's not as high-pitched as it used to be lol. I have to say, I still love them both. I always liked Victoria back when she was in the Spice Girls and whatnot. And I love her sunglass line. And I agree it is lame that David can sit on a bench and get paid millions. Freddie Ljundberg was on our team until mid-season, he was such a better example of how a player coming from out of the country should act, perform, make a deal, etc. I think that's why as a player he was so much more respected then David. Freddie got a pretty big paycheck sure but not nearly as much as David. Also, he didn't get injured so he wasn't just sitting around on the bench.

Double Ditto!

When he signed for LA everyone knew it was because it was the only high profile place left he could go and get a huge paycheck. But I do love how he plays one or two matches, get injured, and then the next day is in London or Paris at a big celebrity do.

Freddie Ljunberg has always been one of my favorites, even though he played for Arsenal. A much better attitude...and he just wanted to play football, not be the cover boy for every magazine in the world.

It isn't really the tone of voice of David and Victoria that I find so unpleasant. I'll just leave it at that.

I am enjoying the talk of the other players though, and I still think the original reason for posting this thread is wonderful. A true hometown hero that the OP knows is something to celebrate.

You ladies keep talking "footie" and perhaps I'll learn a thing or two.

I do miss Freddie on our team Margie, I must say. We weren't seeing as good of results the we needed when he was on the pitch mid-year unfortunately. We've done great this season, and it's too bad Seattle couldn't clench the win opposite LA in the playoffs to make the final.

It is really great to be able to see George doing so well and it's a great feeling knowing he's representing our hometown. Everyone loves him. He's may be on a professional team, but he's got an all around great personality and friendly to everyone which is a bonus. So many people who do go on to become more well-known it seems they forget where they came from.

How do you feel about Thierry Henry? Rumors are going around that Marcus Hahnemann may come back to the States. He's originally from Seattle as well.
