introducing baby Luna!

Postby cwm33 on Tue Jan 25, 2011 4:10 pm

Greetings all!

I'd like to introduce our new puppy Luna to you all (and myself I suppose  ), she is 3/4s Golden Retriever, and 1/4 Great Pyrenees and was born on December 11th, 2010 and due to circumstances with the mother we had to adopt her at just under 6 weeks old. At 6 weeks old she was already 9.5lbs and built like a TANK! My wife has already gotten in the habit of calling her 'dozer' short for bulldozer.

She is definitely a smart little pup, and already recognizes her name and comes when we call her (most of the time, depends on distractions for the time being!!). She's doing absolutely great so far, and hasn't had a #2 accident in the house since probably the 2nd or 3rd day we had her home. I thought it would be wise to join your forums here to get some tips/tricks/advice when I need it on the best way to raise up this little girl to be my best friend.

Well anyway, enough of my drivel, onto the puppy pictures!

Thanks!

I suppose I completely neglected to put down location. I'm in Alberta, Canada. Poor little girl is doing pretty darn good for housebreaking considering her potty is outside in the snow!

Luna's daddy, how are you managing with her being so young? Is she managing her food alright? Do you moisten it or add lactol to it?

She looks like an albino Panda bear (all white!)!

She's very cute. As Tracy alluded to, you will have some extra work to do, and some particular concerns with such a young pup. I'm sure you've done your research about this already. We have some folks here who could advise you, too, if you need it.

Actually her mommy weaned her off fairly early, and she transitioned from pablum to dog food "mush" amazingly quickly according to the woman we got her from. The litter was actually an 'oopsies', so she wasn't a professional breeder but it wasn't her first litter and she definitely knew her stuff!

Her food/water intake has been fantastic so far, she practically cleans her bowl every time (a few little bits left, nothing major) and her attitude towards her kibble has been more along the lines of "GIMMIE GIMMIE GIMMIE!!!" than anything else.

When we first got her at 5.5 weeks and the breeder told us the best thing to do for her food was to let it soak in some hot water for about 20 minutes so it would be a nice mush, which we did. Zero problems! Just yesterday I tried giving her dry kibble only, and she munched it right down without any problems at all. Seems to be drinking like a camel though, but I imagine the only problem with lots of water intake would be daddy having to run her outside more often.

I'm always open for advice and tips, heck that's why I joined the forum! She seems to be getting along VERY well so far, and manages to sleep through the night without any problems. I only had to get up once at 3am to let her out for a potty break, which was my own fault for letting her have a big drink of water before bedtime. The only thing I'm really concerned about that she would have learned from her littermates/mommy would be the whole bite inhibition thing. She does love chasing after our one kitten and chomping on his belly, but I don't think he has enough power in his paws to let her know that "HEY! that's too hard!!" so I've had to keep an eye out to intervene. I think I'm doing a fairly good job at training her that biting people is a no no and it ends playtime, but being only 6 weeks old I imagine that's not a lesson she'd pick up on right away to begin with.

I do intend to start doing clicker training with her as soon as it's viable, and already have a thread started in the behaviour section in regards to that. Just need someone to post there to clear off a bit of the fog.

Knowing about bite inhibition is a good first step. Get and read Dr. Ian Dunbar's book "Before and After Getting Your Puppy". He is the definitive authority on bite inhibition, and his book is invaluable in this regard. He also has some very interesting theories about what age to bring home a puppy (he would have loved you!) and how to socialize a very young pup. If you can't afford to buy your own copy, I would suggest getting it at your local library. Whichever way you get it, just get it. It really will help a great deal!

CWM, I raised a four week old kitten with deerhounds and believe me cats have no problem teaching overly enthusiastic dogs about bite inhibition. The kitten we had was the same size as the dogs' jaws but he soon told them if they were playing too rough. As long as your cat has a safe haven to escape to it should be fine.

Luna sounds like she is doing brilliantly. You appear to have bagged yourself Saint Luna. Well done. Enjoy your little angel puppy.

Luna is just lovely and what a wonderful mix of breeds. It sounds as if, and looks as if, you are already off to a great start. I noticed the crate and playpen, as well as the leash, so well done you! I have a feeling this isn't your first puppy. Sometimes we need a refresher course when it's been a while since a pup was in our home.

I was also pleased to read about your sensible, positive approach to puppyhood and not complaining about having your sleep disrupted. I'm sure Luna will manage this frigid winter with her potty training. Sometimes it helps the pup to do their business faster.

Welcome to the Daily Puppy from Oliver & Henry (Cavalier King Charles Spaniels) and their Mum, Deborah, in London, Ontario.

You're off to a good start! She is a cutie, which part is the 1/4 pyrenees? Love the pics, she looks so soft and she will love the snow. Have fun with her, she will sleep a lot right now, hence the pictures! That will change  :?
