I can't believe I missed the Introductions section! Here is Maya's story and how we became a family:
Maya is a Yorkie/Poodle mix who will be celebrating her 1st birthday later this month. While Maya is a happy and playful puppy now, it wasn't always this way. While most of her litter-mates were spoken for well before 6 weeks old, poor Maya couldn't find a home. "That puppy is WAY too big," everyone said. Her brothers and sisters disappeared, and soon her other puppy friends did too. The weeks turned into months, and still nobody wanted "that big puppy."
After more than 4 months, Maya had pretty much given up on ever finding a permanent home. The last time she got on a scale, she was 5.5 lbs! No wonder nobody wanted her!! She longed to be a little puppy again so maybe someone would think she was cute too, just like the others. She considered not eating, but that only lasted until lunchtime. She thought maybe if she could just convince the humans to cut her hair, they would realize that she wasn't really that big, that she was just a ball of fur. But no matter how much she tried to tell them, they didn't seem to understand.
Then one day, a lady came by to see the puppies. Maya figured it would be like all the other times, that she would pick one of the cute little puppies. She looked over at the lady and noticed there was something different about her. She didn't call Maya "that big puppy;" she called her, "that cute puppy." Maya thought, "Cute? Me??" She initially thought the lady was confused, but she wasn't! Maya was finally getting a home!!
After a long drive, they finally got to the place the lady (me) called "home." Maya didn't know what she meant. It was different than where she had lived before. It was BIG, and the floor was really soft, and there were toys and treats, and there were all kinds of places to explore. It was scary being all alone that first night, but then it got better. Over the next few days, other people came to say hi, and although Maya was really shy at first, she soon learned that people give treats and belly rubs. Some also offered her presents like toys, but she really just wanted the belly rubs.
In the months since Maya first came to the place called "home," she has made a lot of friends. Her best friends (a Yorkie and two cats!) live just a few doors down. She's so sweet, all the neighbors love her. And she's a great teacher -- she taught a neighbor's dog (Bailey) how to act like a puppy. Until meeting Maya, Bailey was scared of everything and her mom said it was like she didn't know how to play. But Maya brought her out of her shell. She still loves exploring new places and learning new things. We've had a few hiccups along the way, but we're figuring it out together.
I still can't believe that Maya is the puppy nobody wanted. She's the cutest, smartest, sweetest puppy ever, and I'm lucky to have her. She's definitely made the place called "home" into a real home.
