Rollie is saying hello

Postby JesseGirl on Tue Apr 26, 2011 11:40 am

Hi,

I wanted to introduce myself and my soon-to-be-puppy, Rollie. We're not getting Rollie for 2 more days, but I wanted to introduce myself because I've been making use of the forums and posting questions related to training already and now I have a few more. Rollie is an 8-wk-old Havanese male and we can't wait to bring him home and add many more pics.

Hello back! Wow, I love how diverse this community is. I guess I should update my profile to reflect our location. We're in Connecticut, US - that's in New England in the north eastern part of the country.

Hello Rollie, we have been discussing you in another post. Havanese are suppose to be a nice even tempered small breed dog, I look forward to the pics. Welcome to DP, we are on the other side of the country, in the wild, wild west.

Rollie is coming home this evening! In just a few hours! Right after work! (Can you tell how excited I am?)

Tomorrow will be VERY hard - my husband gets to stay home with the puppers and I have to leave them to work all day. BUT, I am taking a bunch of vacation time next week so I'll have plenty of puppy time.

Hello warm, fuzzy puppy love (goodbye to sleep!)!

Oh, so unfair, you have to work while your hubby stays home and basks in Rollie's puppiness!
Rollie is adorable and I'm looking forward to many more pictures of your little fluffster.

Rollie's home! And I think we're off to a positive start. He ate in his crate, then romped exuberantly, then threw up his food. Then he ate again and romped again, but we encouraged much less exuberance the second time around. We've taken him out at least 10 times and I have no idea if he peed (doesn't help that it is dark already and it is damp and foggy out so there's no way to tell if the dampness on the grass is rain or puppy-piddle). He's been in and out of his crate several times. He fell asleep and we popped him in there and he's been sort of playing in there and half drifting off (with the door open). I think he's gonna like the crate!

I'm not sure exactly what to do about bedtime tonight - try for the crate near the bed or maybe the playpen instead . . . but I guess we'll figure all that out.

We have a puppy!

Congrats on the new addition! Do you pronounce his name "R-all-lee" or Roll-ee"? He's very sweet.

Well, first night's done! I'm pretty tired, but not because Rollie (pronounced "R-all-ie") cried - he didn't make a peep! He really took to the crate so we brought it upstairs and put the toys and towels from his litter in there. We took turns playing with him in and around the crate while we got ready for bed. We tried closing it by increments and then latched it a few times and he was completely not bothered. When it was time for lights-out, we nonchalantly closed the door, turned out the lights, and turned on our white noise (that's for us, but he might enjoy it too). Then I waited. I had one ear ready for his crying. After an hour and a half of tossing and turning I realized he was perfectly content. Then I started waiting for the potty cries and finally after about 4 hours with no noise, I decided to check on him to make sure he was ok. There he was sitting up with his little, white-tipped tail wagging. So my husband jumped up to take him out (really a funny thing - in his shorts all bleary eyed with this tiny puppy muttering "Outside, potty. Outside, potty!"

After potty, he went back in with no trouble. The trouble came this morning when I discovered he does not like to be in a room alone. I had him in his playpen eating breakfast while I was trying to do some things in the kitchen - next room over and within his eyeline - but he did not like that. He's really never been alone before so it's no wonder. Now it looks like he's looking for his litter and is more unsettled, but I'm sure he'll settle in with time. My hubby is home with him and he told me that Rollie is already taking his first nap of the day - in his crate where he put himself! Hooray! He likes the crate!

I can't wait to go home.

P.S. I tried taking a bunch of pics, but 9-wk-old puppies don't stay still much. I have a good one of him sleeping on the way home though. I'll get it up there.

Thank you for all the support and for sharing in with us during this special time!

First of all, kudos to your husband for enforcing the training "words" despite being half asleep...AND...being the one to get up and take him out. That is rare in my experience, and from what I've heard, I'm not the only woman to say that, so well done, both of you!

It's also wonderful to hear that already Rollie finds his crate to be his safe place. As you said, it is understandable that he doesn't enjoy suddenly finding himself alone. That is perfectly normal. Putting himself to bed, in the crate, for a nap is also a terrific sign.

Enjoy your weekend with Rollie!
