Kayenne says Hi (kian! Poultry...)

Postby Emma & Kay on Tue May 31, 2011 8:08 pm

I wanted to post a quick "Hello" while I have five minutes tonight. :)

I’m Emma. I signed up recently, but have been a shadow-lurker for about 4 to 5 years now. When I got my first dog, a Jack Russell called Tipster...For short, of course 8) ... I started doing some basic online research. I found The Daily Puppy and loved viewing the dogs every day, so I stuck around. I was too young to know how to sign up to things, so I never did. About a year ago, I checked the registration terms, and saw you had to be a certain age. Now I'm that certain age.

The plan was to sign up as soon as possible, because I was eager to talk to other dog-people, but when I was able to register, life got in the way. Then there was no reason to register. And now there is again. :) I've been posting in a breed-specific forum and getting some very good answers on questions regarding training my not-so-little 6 month old Doberman pup, but I wanted to expand the variety of training methods for her. (Said forum is all well and good, but all the training advice is roughly the same.)

So there's no confusion, I'll break the important parts down.

I'm a "youngster" at 14. Home schooled (Home educated if you're in the UK, like a certain someone) and 'anti-didactic". Basically, lessons aren't planned. I ask a question, get the answer, learn something. I live with one sibling who used to be 'dog mad' but then switched to cats. And live with my mother and six dogs, plus poultry, a cat and some small critters. I also 'own' a fox. But, y'know. He comes with conditions. I'm not allowed to take pictures of him while he eats. (And, he doesn't like vegetables. Just sayin'.) 8)

Kayenne is doing well in her training (as am I!) and is currently learning instant commands (Sitting as soon as she's told sort of thing) and some distance commands, but those are just a refresher. She was already taught that "Sit!" means to sit where you are, not where you think you should be. She's got a few very good, solid commands...Such as "Wait". She knows never to move from the wait, until the person handling her tells her to (usually me, as I'm her owner). I'm proud of her "Focused Heeling" which all my dogs do...But, it looks just that little more impressive with a dog that could mash you into the side of a fast moving car.

I'm hoping to do a small bit of agility when she hits the 18 month mark, but that would just be for bonding purposes. I don't fancy running around a ring with a clutzy Doberman, sending her over jumps which she'll surely knock down  I was hoping to do some protection work with her, but failed to find a decent training in the area, for starters. And then I just plain decided "not to go there!"

I've grown up around dogs my entire life, of all shapes, sizes and colours. I’m definitely a “big dog” person, but, of course, I make allowances.

I've attached a few pictures, but there are more in the dogs' albums. :) I'd like to apologise in advance for the watermark. I've found a couple of my pictures elsewhere. Since I've started watermarking the pictures I post, nobody has mentioned them elsewhere, and I haven't seen 'em, either. But I don't want the problem to arise again. Ergo, watermark.

5 weeks.

Well, my dear, I don't know if there's anything we can tell you that you don't already know! I mean no insult or disrespect by that. If you really are only 14 years old, your mother has done a wonderful job with your upbringing and education. Add to that you are funny, and I think it's going to fun having you around here!

It's also very nice to see an uncropped Dobe. She looks like she has a great sense of humour, too!

Welcome to the DP from Phyrie, and Kiba the Cav.

Why thank you, Phyrie (and Kiba)! I'm definitely 14. Unless you ask my father, and then I'm 15. I assure you, I know nuttin' (apart from big words 8) I know plenty of those). And even if I did know a little bit...I'm a slow learner, so I hope you're all patient. Kayenne is a very funny girl at the moment. As I type this, she's upside-down in her dog bed. The noises she makes when sleeping are frightening sometimes.

Antidisestablishmentarianism ... No idea what it means. I just know how to spell it and say it.

Emma, it is lovely to have you join us. One of my very favourite girl's names is Emma and was the name of my beloved Golden Retriever. Now I have 2 Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Oliver the Blenheim and Henry, the Tri. I also have two sons, so I suppose I was destined to always be around the male species. Apparently there is only room for one bitch in this house.

I think you will find lots of useful information on this site. Couple that with what you've already learned, and I'm sure you will be able to form your own opinions, as well as offer suggestions to others.

Kay is simply beautiful! I'm so glad that the UK does not allow for the mutilation of dog's ears! Dobermans looks so much better when they are "natural".

I am located in London, Ontario, Canada and we have members from all over the world. We have many members from the UK, including some younger members like yourself. It's unfortunate that I am unable to say that all of the young people who join this site are as mature as you. No question is too silly so ask away!

If you are allowed to say, in what part of the the UK are you located?

Welcome to the Daily Puppy from Oliver & Henry, and of course their Mum (Deb) in London, Ontario

Hiya Deb, Oliver, and Henry.

I've seen you mention your Golden a few times (as creepy as that may sound! ) and now associate the name with a soft meaning. To be honest, mother named me Emma to spite my father. (Their relationship totally hit it off right from the start. ) He wanted to call me Catherine. (Thank you, Mum!) Not that there's anything wrong with Catherine. There's just something wrong with naming your child after somebody you weren't familiar with, and who is now diseased...If I do say so myself. :| Anyway, I'm rambling.

I've already picked up quite a lot from the forums (and that was before registering...) such as "IAN DUNBAR IS THE BEST!" As I don't have a credit card, it's just breaking mother down and getting her to use hers to order the book for me online. Then I shall have the ultimate knowledge.

Of course I'm allowed to say where I live. Mother trusts me. Plus, y'know. Big scary guard dog. Not really comfortable with new people yet. She growls. Or whimpers? And 'oofs'. (Then runs away, but that's not the point.) I'm just outside of a London, myself. We frequent there, because my uncle lives in Comegetme Drive-a-Way. 8) Of course the name was a joke. (har-de-har) But I do reside in the far-outer skirts of London. :)

Cropping has been banned in England for years. And year and years and years. I tried finding out exactly when it was 'deleted from our system' a couple of weeks ago, and failed miserably, so I'll just settle for saying "It's been banned for forever." And docking tails, since April 2007. To be perfectly honest, I wouldn't have been too bothered if Kay had been a dockée. I quite like my Terriers stubby tail. Couple that with the fact Kay is a Happy Dog 24/7, and her tail just about reaches any table-top...Again, back to serious things, docking is classed as "more humane" in most of the Dobe world, because it's done days after the pups are born, as opposed to cropping ears, which is done when the pup reaches about 6 weeks. Days old = less nerve endings. Weeks old = stopped twitching in their sleep. It's weird. I keep seeing discussions on animal neglect and abuse being brought up on the Breed-Specific website I visit, but most of the users crop their pups ears. I think I prefer neglecting the animal to purposely causing it unnecessary pain. (I don't condone any. Just sayin'. ) It has NO purpose what-so-ever, because most of 'em aren't show material, even with 'mutilated body parts'. But hey, both procedures are banned now, so who cares? (Referring to people in the UK. We don't care anymore. 8) )

Thanks for the welcome, Deb & Boys, as well as the compliments to a certain black and tan Duracell battery. I'm quickly turning into a Cavalier kind of person. Welcomed by three Cavs (and owners) at once...'tis all too much Blenheim fluff. (Sorry, Henry; it's 2-1. You're outnumbered. Adorable, but outnumbered.)

Hi Emma, I'm happy you've decided to join us, you lurker you!

Kay is such a beauty and I love the nickname you've given her.

I also prefer undocked dogs, I wish we were up to speed here in the US in regards to docking. I personally don't think it makes a dog any more attractive. Of course, I have three mutts, I like the look of floppy ears and wonky tails!

I've read some pretty hideous descriptions of injured whippy tails that won't heal (it's always very happy dogs that have this problem) so I suppose I can understand the tail docking in THAT case. But I have to wonder why the breed (whichever it is) that has tails that long and whippy. Is it because they were designed to be docked? I am not 100% on the purpose of the Doberman Pinscher, but I am going to assume it's protection and security, for the sake of this conversation. In that case, I can see not wanting a whippy tail, for the quiet factor, and the "bad guys" not having a handle to grab the dog. But if that's so, do Doberman breeders now breed for shorter, stouter tails, to help prevent broken tail syndrome?

Hiya RJM! Thanks fer' the welcome.

Phyrie, I'm 90% sure that the tail wasn't Louis Dobermans first (second, third, or fourth...) concern when he was 'perfecting' the Doberman. He was after a sleek and fearce look, and once he got the rough outline (so to speak) other people took over and added the finishing touches. They're docked to remove any sort of "handle" that thieves could use on the dog, as well as to stop possible injury during a chase and all that, as I'm sure 'ya know. Cropping was done because it makes for an "Ahhh" look, rather than an "Oh" look. The plus-side to cropping of a Dobies ears, is that it gave them a better hearing advantage. Dobermans were bred to protect a tax-mans money, so, they were pretty much a furry body guard. You can't have your body guard being swung around by his tail. Their tails are just as long (naturally) now as they were in the 1800's.I wouldn't mind a 'bred in' dock, though. Just finished cleaning up a glass, which was once filled with water.

I've been stressing out a lil' bit today, and so I decided, instead of biking with Kay, I'd take her for a walk to the lake so she could have a swim and I could unwind before going out tonight. I took my camera along, and thought a few of the pictures were quite nice.

To ruin a good morning, I bumped into one of my Sergeants (Junior Sergeant) - or, rather, got in his way while he was on his bike. (I think I might have forgotten to mention my "Cadet Career" as our adult instructor calls it, in my first post. I'm a beginning Cadet for the local Army Cadets Detachment. My future will involve army work, and what better place to start than Cadets? ) I'm socially awkward (even as a little girl I was awkward  ), and even more so if I'm not expecting company! It was an amusing 5 minutes. What was not amusing, was Kayenne being all lovey-dovey with Sergeant, and then chasing him up the road on his bike! I apologised for it tonight...But still. A big Doberman getting under your wheels. Must've been annoying. He clearly agreed, as I was picked upon. I'm just hoping I didn't sound as bad as I thought I sounded.

Kayenne enjoyed her walk though. As did I. Now we're just relaxing. Well...SHE'S relaxing, and I'm revising. I have my basic test next week, so wish me luck!

[My last post is a little jumbled, innit? ]

Hi Margie! Jose is a very handsome little guy. I know a little JRT / Chihuahua who lives in the village. Apparently they all have the 'cute factor'.

Hullo Louise, Saffy and Pingu. I've always wanted to go to Australia. I think I'd probably die in the summer, though. It's 18C degrees, and I'm already contemplating streaking through the house. 8)

Haha, I always die in our Winter.... and it only goes down to about 14C degrees... I'm more of a summer person, our Summer(where I live in- coast of Queensland) is around 32C degrees average.... just right. 8)

As much as I'd love to see snow, I can't imagine feeling the coldWINTER, living in northern USA, Canada and London..... EEEK!!! :)

Somehow, it stayed fairly cool over the winter in my part of the UK. I was able to stand outside comfortably in a t-shirt and tracksuit bottoms during snow-fall a few times. A real life-saver when Kayenne decided that at 5AM, she needed a wee. 8)

Welcome Emma and Kay from Amy and Dixie in Nova Scotia.

I too like the name Emma, it is in my top 5 girl names :) Kay is beautiful! I believe recently Nova Scotia and New Burnswick have banned vets from cropping and docking dogs. I total ban would be great, but it is a step in the right direction. I own a Rottweiler/German Shepherd mix and she has a thick tail that has left bruises on my legs and broke many glasses :D I prefer the natural look too!

A lot of my family is from England. Actually my boyfriend and his siblings are first generation Canadian in his family. We are planning a trip out to England next summer, I am very excited!
