Wow, that's amazing! I love the photo of the Goanna. Not something I'd see during a picnic!
I also love kangaroos! In the Pittsburgh zoo they have a huge enclosure for Kangaroos with a path that goes right through it. You could reach out and touch them, I never did, never really felt like being punched  I like to look, not touch.

The wildlife there just sounds so incredible!

Lets see, I grew up on the south shore of Long Island and then moved to Potsdam NY which is near the Canadian border for college and then I relocated to Fairbanks Alaska  After meeting a guy over the internet and he flew out to NY to meet me and we got married 5 days after meeting. That is how I wound up in Alaska!

Fairbanks is famous for The World Ice Carving Championships, some of the work these ice carvers do is beautiful, http://www.icealaska.com you can see the sculptures from this years competition.

Fairbanks is right in the center of Alaska, the Chena River flows thru it and meets up with the Tanana River going south.

In the winter it is dark, bu December 21st Winter Solstice we get about 4 hours of daylight, in the summer we get almost 24 hours of daylight by June 21st which is Summer Solstice.

In the winter it can get to -40 or -50 (F) and in the summer it can get up into the high 80's (F) or sometimes into the 90's (F)

So far this summer we have not gotten a whole lot of rain which has been causing forest fires.

Oh and we are also famous for the Yukon Quest Sled Dog race that either starts in Fairbanks going to Whitehorse Yukon Territories or it starts in Whitehorse and ends in Fairbanks, the race is held in February and next year it will start in Fairbanks.

I would say that Fairbanks has a LOT of dog mushers in the area.

Oh and unfortunately Alaska is also famous for Sarah Palin

Hi Jaye, I did not know you lived there. We have friends in Fairbanks and have been to the southern part of Alaska. It is a beautiful state, however, in the summer I wouldn't sleep much too much play in the light! The ice sculptures are something I would like to see.

Yep I lived here when I was on here before. Butters is 7 years old, one of my neighbors took the picture that is in my Avatar she says that picture of Butters reminds her of "Mamma" from a TV show that is eluding me at the moment.

When I first arrived in Alaska it was the middle of May (the 14th) 20 years ago and there was still some snow on the ground after a record snow fall winter. My ex husband had a blackening film over the windows which made adjusting to the constant sunlight a bit easier. But I agree I find myself going to bed later and later because of the sunlight!!

Caramel, I loved your photos! You do live in a beautiful place. The beaches are so pristine.

That was a lot of gear on the beach! It almost looked as if you (or whomever) had disembarked from a flight and landed on the beach. Why not?! I'm not very familiar with my Australian geography, but I do know that the Great Coral Reef is located off of the coast of Australia. Are you near that area? Please forgive my ignorance. I only learn if I ask.

From other pictures I have seen from our other Aussie members, it looks wonderful to me! 8)

I also enjoyed the information about Alaska. My Mum took an Alaskan cruise not too long ago and loved it. I had a friend who lived in Whitehorse, in the Yukon Territories for a while. She returned to Ontario after living in Victoria for a while. It is a beautiful part of North America. Most of us Canadians live within 100 miles of the US border all across Canada. It's warmer.

I do enjoy this thread.

That's no problem Margie. If we run out of room in this house I am friends with the owners of three guest houses (B&Bs). There's room for everyone. Plus Linda could take her painting home with her.

I love your town! 2013, I'm coming with camera around neck, I paused it so I could see your store. Looks like you have
a great location. I could never get sick of the beautiful scenery that is your home now, wise choice Tracy!

My thirteen year old niece here in England is collecting postcards. She has quite a few now but, I thought it would be nice if she had some from all over the world. That is where you lovely DPers come in. Would anyone be interested in sending a postcard to my niece Pip? If so pop a pm to me and I'll give you her address. For obvious reasons this request goes to the DP regulars, not complete strangers (no offence intended).

Thanks guys.
