Run Home, Tobe-lé-rone...♥

Postby Emma & Kay on Sat Oct 22, 2011 4:41 pm

At 8:30AM this morning, our dog, Toby, "escaped" out of the Dog Boarders front door. She either didn't notice he was gone and shut the door, or watched him walk away. At 11:30AM, we got a call from said Dog Boarder -who I AM going to name- Evelyn, saying that he was missing. Our friend, who was and is, looking after our other two dogs went around and picked up Tiffany, who was being boarded with Toby.

After posting endlessly and spreading the word from 11:30AM onwards to 10:00PM, we had no sightings. Not one. Still thinking maybe Toby was just hiding out in some shrubbery, or had been found by somebody, or was simply exploring the new place he'd been allowed to roam in, we kept the hopes high. At 10:16PM, we got a call from somebody who worked on the railway tracks.

The man who found him has kindly taken him to Evelyns home, where we intend for her to keep him safe until we can return home and collect him on Monday. Toby was 5 years old.

I can't believe this has happened. I honestly don't know what to say. We can't even go home.

Oh, I am so sorry! I just can't imagine the pain you, and your family, are feeling right now. I simply don't know what to say, other than "I'm sorry." Very, very sorry.

The stories we've been told by the husband of Evelyn and Evelyn herself aren't adding up, so we'll be taking it to court. Evelyn is trying to take the blame off of herself and put it on us for "not warning her of his recall problems".

There've been a few raised voices tonight. Evelyn keeps putting the phone down and walking away whenever I tell her what she's done. I've told her I don't want to see any of the posters she put up on Monday, so she has an early start tomorrow. I really can't believe this has happened. I'd have expected something like this from Tiffany, hence why we warned her to keep an eye on Tiff, but not Toby. Toby was Toby. Toby didn't run away. He didn't chase animals. He knew his name. He knew that he wasn't allowed out the door. He knew that "Come" meant now, not when you feel like it. I can't believe we don't have Toby anymore. We weren't even away for a day.

People have been telling us that "the worst has happened". It's not the best, but it's not the worst. The worst would be never knowing. I was fine until Evelyn wouldn't answer her phone. I just burst into tears. I can't believe how careless she was. She kept calling Toby "she" and "her". I don't think they even realise what they've done.

Oh Emma! My heart is breaking for you, and sweet Toby. Thank goodness you were able to have someone collect Tiffany and remove her from that situation.

I do know how you feel, and it hurts so damn much and adds such anger because it didn't need to happen. Good for you for accentuating what little positive there is in all of this and that is the knowing. Not knowing is worse.

I am so very, very sorry this has happened. Toby is now your angel, and you'll be together again someday, I believe.

My sincerest condolences to you, and your family.

I called Evelyn this morning at just gone 8AM to remind her that we'll be back on Monday and that we've sent someone round to pick Toby up, but she didn't answer. I called her at just gone 12PM and left a message on her mobile/cell and landline, telling her that we'll speak to her Monday, and that somebody was picking up Toby. No reply.

I just called Kim, who's gone to pick up Toby for us (think I said that part in my other posts), and she was pulling up at Evelyns house. She'll call me when she gets Toby back home.

Tippi, Star and Tiffany are all A-OK. I even heard them barking, hehheh. Evelyn seems to be trying to pretend nothing ever happened. Last night, the last time I talked to Evelyn/Husband Paul, I was accused of threatening physical violence. Kinda made me laugh a little. I was able to talk to Evelyn, but she had changed her story completely.

She first said that Toby did a left and a right then a left, or something along those lines, out of her house. Then, last night, she said the postman tried to catch him with her. We were never told there was a postman. When we get back home, I'll go to Evelyns at around 8AM so that I can ask the postman himself if he saw or tried to catch Toby, just out of curiosity.

I can't understand why she's lying to us.

She keeps telling me she didn't do it on purpose, and doesn't like it when I shout at her. She seems to think she'd be totally calm and collected ("polite" as she said) if somebody let her dog out of their house while she was hundreds of miles away, and let it get hit by a train, but gets so offended when I point out that her dog would look like Toby if she was smooth coated.

I don't know if we'll be able to sue. We're not doing it for the money. We're doing it to make her life terrible. It's an unspoken fact that you take more care of somebody elses property than you do of your own, be it their car or their dog. She wants us to look after her dog in November some time. I wonder if she'll talk about that at all, or just not drop her off.

If we can't sue her, then we'll just make it known what happened.

I literally just got off the phone with Kim again. She picked up Toby, and he was wrapped in a towel and put in a washing basket. Evelyn was there. The fact she's ignoring our calls just adds insult to injury. She said some crap about how she walked up and down all day yesterday looking for him, and that she asked the people at the railway to keep an eye out, which we know is a lie. I talked to the girlfriend of someone (The man who took Toby to Evelyns) who was working on the railway tracks, and she never said anything about her or her boyfriend being alerted of Tobys disappearance until I posted online. She also changed her story again. Yesterday, she told me she'd spent a 'good' half our looking for him. Now, she was looking for him all day.

Don't really know what's going on. I feel a lot better knowing that Toby's at home. Kim's put him in a spare rabbit hutch, in a (empty) chicken coop in our back garden. We'll be home tomorrow.

It doesn't matter the story or how many times she changes it, the fact remains that she was irresponsible and Toby got out. She does need to stop all the stories and just apologize and make amends. Is this a friend or someone with a actual boarding facility?

Kian, she used to come to dog classes with her JRT, but stopped. We've been boarding her dog whenever she wants to go away, or when she has to work a full day. She's not a friend, but she's not a total stranger. When we wanted to go away, she offered to look after Tiffany and Toby, and we paid her to have them. Having our dogs was a job for her.
