Achillies mom....See theyre everywhere..I know one well known breeder in Jacksonville Fla. and another in New Orleans. There is also a famous Siberian breeder in port Arthur,TX, She formerly lived in Charleston WVA and was part of our circle.

Since your OH allready has experience with the breed and their rascally ways, perhaps you could foster one just for fun? Mine got along well with my OHs GSD and Keeshonds when we married and combined packs, got a SS in the seal too.[He is now 38 and has his own SS,now 14].

..You will find the Siberians temperment different, both are quite intelligent but the GSD lives to serve, whereas the Sibes main concern is "Whats in it for ME" Achillies would'nt mind haveing a pretty little Siberian girl around y'a know :P

As I have said before, the main requirement for ths Sibe owner is a healthy sense of humor.

...Lots Of Luck  ...Richard

My husky Jack is just the love of my life. When I was given Jack (as a gift from my friends who raised his mother) I didn't know much about the breed. When I started researching, I knew it would be a lot of work wearing him out and keeping him entertained. I've bought a lot of those "work for food" toys out there and he loves them. Any other ideas for stimulating him mentally? He also gets a lot of playtime with other dogs in the area which is good. I want him to be well rounded and accepting of other dogs and people including children and babies.

He's only a year old now and is still a little rambunctious- as in he loves to chase anything small- but we call him the anti-husky because he's not very vocal and actually enjoys being lazy and laying around the house. From what I hear, they usually need tons of exercise to be content and although he loves to go out and run, he's quite the couch potato too.

Has anyone gotten into bike-joring or scootering? I've been looking into it and am really curious about it.

Rambunctious is a good word to describe Siberians, they are born that way but usually get over it by the time they are 14 or 15 years old.

.They are happy to pull anything anytime, thats their job...They are NOT as a rule guard dogs they are just as fond of burglars as their own people...The average Husky feels that it is not in his job description to defend you...If you want a protection dog get a GSD...He WILL however. defend his right to food and bitches in season

Most Siberians rarely bark although they certainly can..They will communicate through various vocalizations and the singing is really impressive..I used to be welcomed home from work at 4am with a group howl.....My neighbours loved it.

The Siberian has always been one of my favorite breeds. I would just feel bad having one anywhere other than a colder northern climate. I know they would probably be fine, especially if kept inside with the A/C running, but still would have the issue of exercise to contend with.

I also saw a youtube video once of a couple who combs out their siberian's coat during their shedding season (I believe the term is blow out their coat?). It looked intense... Considering I've become spoiled with my miniature schnauzer, who doesn't shed, I wonder if it'd be hard to transition from a non-shedder to a major shedder.

How does everyone cope with all the fur?

Regardless, I hope to be the lucky owner of a Siberian Husky one day. :D

Fritz_Dog, My Siberian Husky, Dusty, would typically blow his coat in July. It was a major brush-a-thon for a couple weeks, I could actually pull clumps of fur out with my fingers. He looked like a homeless stray, it was so bad. But once he was all brushed out, he was beautiful for another year.
Dusty did live outside and loved it, he was never comfortable in the house, even though I tried to make him a house dog. I'm sure it would be a big transition for you, going from a non-shedder like a Schnauzer, to having a Sibe in the house. But like all things dog, we deal with it, right?

Heh. I know a lady on another group with seven, eight or more Siberians at the same time, all living in the house! And yes, they all blow coat at the same time. She says it's like walking through snow drifts. The fur piles up in the corners a foot deep! Oh my!

RJM, your post would have been perfect for one of our Grown Up Pups recently named "Blue". He is a Hound who lives outside and sleeps in the Chicken Coop. He's happy there, on HIS farm, and his terms. The thrashing his humans took from some of our members was ridiculous.

Not every dog is meant to be a house dog, and you of all people, are best to explain this. Needless to say, many posts were deleted and several members, who are regular posters on the Front Page received messages from me.

I even used the Siberian as an example of dogs who live to be outdoors.

My first experience with the breed was more than 30 years ago with our au pair who bred them, along with her husband and how July and August were extremely difficult months, especially on the Show Circuit because they "blow their coats". Many breeds shed endlessly like Cavaliers!!! It is simply a matter of constant brushing and vacuuming.

Richard knows the most about this. I've been in recent contact with him and I'm sure when he is able, he'll respond in here.

First of all, blowing coat refers to periodic sheding of the soft undercoat....It is a fact of life for ihe Siberian owner. One can help the process along with daily brushing and combing as well as warm baths..My Siberians are comfortable inside or out but the undercoat grows best in cool conditions.

..Unless you are showing coat care is all wash and brush...Local temperature is not that critical...the pups will work it out.
..When I was showing I competed against Sibes from Florida to Canada year around...There are of course extremes in temperature where I bring everybody in,95-100f or 20 below 0 is an example...I have also won at shows where the temp. was 100f.

Right now the girls are out in the kennel, its 32f and they think its a day at the beach.

Hi! I have an almost two year old husky malamute mix. While he his excellent indoors walking around and playing in the backyard, he almost always takes ME for a walk and not the other way around. We have been to a couple of trainers and things have not worked out. I do realize they are bred for pulling but its out of hand. We just moved to an area with a lot of huskies and the ones we see are very good on leashes and off! Any advice on how to stop the pulling?

co-Kay,I would suggest you find a good obedience training club [look in the phonebook]. Take their beginners course and they will train you to train your dog.

...You will be instructed by experienced trainers, usually in a class of similar size dogs...If you are not satisfied with the results many clubs will let you repeat the course without further charge....You will also meet lots of nice people and make new friends.....Generally you will be invited to join the club if you wish and you may train as space permits at no expense other than your annual dues.

Siberians CAN be trained it just requires a bit of innovation, what works for a Golden Retriever does not always work for a Husky...One of our girls is still the youngest Siberian to finish her CD title [at 6mo 3 weeks ] in the history of the breed..

So Good Luck.....Richard 8) 8)

co-Kay, Richard has bred and shown Huskies for at least 40 years, so he knows more about them than anyone else on this site. Follow his advice, and if you need further assistance, come back and ask more questions. I know he will be more than happy to help.

Hi, I'm Catherine and i have a Siberian husky named Bandit and i love him to death.

We adopted him at maybe 5 years of age. He loves to run and sleep but, is not so obedient. When we adopted him he only new sit ,stay , and come and it seems to be impossible to teach him anything more. He also, loves to greet people with his singing and get quite jealous when other dogs are near. Also, it seems like he was abused before because if someone yells or raise their hands he tends to run and cower but, he has soon learned that it is safe now and no longer runs.

But what i want to learn are grooming techniques and how to get his shedding hair out easier. I use a furminator and love it but, I'm curious. Also, giving him a bath such a long process since i don't have a high powered blow dryer. So any advice? On shampoo, combs, conditioners, etc.? Also, i plan to do some amateur urban mushing with my to dogs any suggestions in equipment?

Here's Bandit
