Kris, I had no idea that "appies" meant "appetizers" or hors d'oeuvres or a "first course". I've heard them referred to as "Apps" which I find ridiculous, as that is also something one adds to their telephone, and when used in that context means an "application" and has nothing to do with food.

Perhaps it's the Canadian English, as I would call those "starters" or hors d'oeuvres, but never "appies". I suppose it's the same "lingo" used by certain restaurants where they ask which type of "side" one wishes with dinner. Side????? Do they mean "side dish", and if so, be more specific as in what are the options?!

I saw Phyrie's beautiful Phyllo Crab creations which I would refer to as an hors d'oeuvre, or a "starter" if I was being casual.

The use of the English language is interesting indeed. :D

Tracy, do you call them "appies" in England? What do you call them?

Inquiring minds need to know.

LOL Deb! Actually, Phyrie was the one who referred to them as "appies", in her post with the photo...so maybe it's a BC thing!
At first I thought it said apples, and was oh so confused...heehee! But I agree, they DO look delicious....yum!!

I don't know if it's a local thing, but it's used everywhere here! We don't have "Happy Hour" any more in bars (that encourages over-drinking and our government must create stupid laws and rules for us too-stupid-for-our-own-good citizens) so a lot of them have "Appy Hour", during which they serve little snacks and hors d'oeuvres. One of our local grocery stores have an "Appy Hour" every day between 4:00 and 6:00 when they offer a really good deal on a selected item. Last week they had 2 pound bags of shrimp on 2 for 1, and I picked up a really delicious Boston Cream Cake half price a while ago during "Appy Hour".

Sorry for the confusion. I hadn't even considered it was a local custom, and would be unfamiliar to you.

That is hilarious!!! I've never heard of "Appy Hour", and we in Ontario also had "Happy Hour" outlawed back in the 80's or early 90's. It's all a blur to me.

Here I was thinking Kian was using some "Western US speak" of which I'd never heard, like "Wally World" means "Wal-Mart"! I am enjoying a chuckle over here.

RJM, I didn't even notice (obviously) that Phyrie had called them that!

Phyrie, I am just going to have to conduct a survey around here to see if anyone else calls them "Appies". As I mentioned, they do like to use the term "Apps" which as I said, seems ridiculous to me. I could probably create a whole routine based on the variances in the English language depending on where one lives. Perhaps it's a Western thing or I've been living under a rock for far too long. It's probably the latter!

ETA: I just went back and looked at Phyrie's post. I know now why I missed the bit about the "appies". I was swooning over how delicious the food looked, as well as Phyrie's new rings. That's my story and I'm sticking to it! :P

I'm laughing so hard now! I thought Phyries term "appies" was the kind of pastry she made (with apples).
Here we just call them "appetizers", that's it. No Western Slang for that one....LOL!!

Kian, that's even funnier!!!!

RJM mentioned "apples" as well. Oh I am laughing over here. I am honestly going to ask people I encounter (and generally know, not perfect strangers) if they know what "appies" are. :D 8)

Meanwhile, had I not been ogling the food, and jewellery so much, I would have realized it was Phyrie's phrase and not Kian's. LOL!

We don't have "appies" but we do have "happy hours". Our local pub does "buy one get one free" from 5-7 on a Friday. Our appies are starters or hors d'oeuvres.

Thanks for the info Tracy. As Phyrie mentioned, several of our Provinces outlawed "Happy Hour" as it seemed to encourage drunk driving for people coming home from work. We don't have "locals" that one can walk to and from, so instead they started offering free food in the form of starters or hors d'oeuvres. However, I had never heard them called "appies" so I think that is a BC thing, which is rather cute. :D

Some bar/restaurants here offer "half off apps" during certain times. Firstly, I am not even keen on the term "appetizers" but then to shorten it to "apps", like something for ones telephone really puts me off. It's a personal preference I realize, and my sons tell me I could do an entire stand up routine on "apps" alone.

For BC, Appies it is! I think that's rather cute and it's regional making it unique, and therefore, special like "Hotpot"

Whew! I'm glad we passed the "Deb-Raw" test! I would hate to have Deb come blowing into town, hell-bent on teaching us all how to properly describe individual bites of prepared food! Oh, wait, I would LOVE that!! Hell's bells, how can we tick you off enough to accomplish that, Deb? Hmmm, I'll have to think of some, and post them all at once, to ENSURE a visit! LOL!

Seriously, though, I think it's kind of neat that we have our own colloquialism. I collect them, actually. Going to visit my parents down in Arizona I discovered that not only do we have an "accent" but we pronounce several words and phrases in a very Canadian way. And they say that we all really do say, "Eh", although I swear I've never heard that expression come out of my mouth! LOL!

LMAO!!! That would be great, wouldn't it? Of course we would need video, Phyrie.

Tell her you've started a campaign to change the term "appies" to "APPS"...LOL! :P

LOL!!! Oh my goodness, am I *that* bad?! Phyrie, I wouldn't want to change a local colloquialism, ever. Those are the types of things that endear me to a region or an area. Travel is the best educator, and when in Rome....

RJM, your answer of calling them "Apps" cracked me right up! LOL!!!! I know it's silly, but calling them "apps" is just as silly, IMHO.

Perhaps I'll just have to take a trip to "the Rock" where Phyrie lives so I can enjoy the local Appies and wax profound about how delicious they are. :P Food + Excellent Companionship = Good Times! :D

I remember being teased unmercifully for referring to my hosiery as "pantyhose" when I was last in England. Mind you, I was surrounded by young men, and I asked my friend to take me to a shop where I could buy some "pantyhose". That was the funniest thing they'd ever heard! I nearly acquired the nickname of "pantyhose". 8)

This is what makes the world go round.

Pantyhose is hilarious. We had a thread ages ago that celebrated our differences in language. Maybe we should resurrect it.

LOL! Tracy it amuses me that you think "pantyhose" are hilarious still. It was funny to hear these British boys attempt to imitate my "accent" when saying "pantyhose". These fellows were attending the Royal Ag in Cirencester, and I had many memorable and wonderful experiences in a fortnight. :D  8)

The language differences are always interesting and amusing to me as well. Just the parts on a car alone can make for a long discussion. Boot, Windscreen, Bonnet...etc. :P I also love the expressions like "Phwoar". My Mum still does that, but I never knew how to spell it. 8)

Sorry to thread hog Phyrie....or Phy as Tracy so lovingly calls you, which suits! ♥
