Nothing new, just updating her thread for allergy tracking.

Switched her food again to TOTW Lamb & Sweet Potato. She was having a slight reaction to something and it may have been the salmon. She has been on the new food (adding it a little more at each meal) and so far things seem better.

Time will tell.

Good luck with that Linda. Once you find the right balance, it makes things much easier. Lamb is quite gentle, and who doesn't love a sweet potato?

Sadie is doing really well on the TOTW Lamb & Sweet Potato. AND she loves it!!

Her ears inside turned beet red toward the end of the salmon/sweet potato. I really do think she had a reaction to that salmon. I've had to clean her ears every other day, and they are now a very pretty light pink again.

When I leave for work in the morning now, I first go into the bedroom to tell her goodbye and give some cuddles. Then I kiss the OH goodbye and walk to the door. For about two weeks straight now, Sadie has been running to me full boar with what looks like a smile on her face. She wants some last minute cuddles and pets. I swear she is coming to tell me goodbye every morning, and it puts a smile on my face all the way to work

Sadie had to go to the vet today for her ears. When we woke up Monday morning I notice a dried crustiness in her fur under one ear. They had turned very red again and one was looking pretty bad. I cleaned them before I went to work then called the vet as soon as they opened.

They couldn't get us in until today (Tuesday). She has a yeast infection in both ears, and one is definitely worse than the other. She also has a secondary infection on the inner part of her back legs that is also related to allergies/ear problems. The vet gave her an antibiotic for both infections, ear drops, a steroid shot, steroid pills to take for the next two weeks, an antihistamine, a leave on after bath (or to use on just itchy spots) rinse to help with her itching, and a different ear cleaner than what the other vet had us using. Her temp was 103 and the vet said it should be between 98 - 101.

She said no more benadryl or claritin since she seems to have built up a tolerance to them. Yay!

She is now sleeping beside me on the couch, very relaxed, not itching and not digging at her ears or rubbing them on the carpet. It's nice to see!

Deb you were right when you said I may really like the new vet's office. I have to admit I had a wall up in the beginning, I was braced for the worst and had already been thinking about who I would take her to in the future if I didn't care for them. This place is very fancy compared to the other vet's office and I thought they would just gouge me with high prices and quick in the door out the door service. WELL, my wall came down very quickly. The vet tech and the vet herself were SO good. Sadie can be a rambunctious handful because she is OVERLY friendly. They handled her well, explained everything very well, and answered all of my questions in detail with a lot of patience. The vet was pleased with the TOTW lamb that I switched her to, she didn't try to push the Hills at all. The OH and I were both VERY pleased with this new (to us) vet's office, the staff and especially the vet. Sadie goes back in two weeks to see how things are progressing.
Oh, and the vet gave me an estimate of the cost after discussing all she thought needed to be done. The OH and I were trying to guess how much it would cost, but would not balk, we were just guessing. They are NOT price gougers, I was totally surprised at how low the cost was for all that was being done!

A big plus also is this vet had an allergy dog and fully understands. She suggested giving Sadie her pills in a marshmallow instead of cheese. I tried it tonight and it worked! I just poked the ends of the capsules into the little marshmallows and Sadie didn't even know she had taken a pill. The vet said it is very rare for a dog to be allergic to sugar. Who would have ever guessed, marshmallows!

Also the vet said the fall allergy season never went away this year, our temps have not been low enough long enough. She said Sadie is actually better than a lot of the dogs who have come in. That surprised me because Sadie's ears looked horrible tonight when I got home.

But she's better now ♥

Linda, first of all, I am so sorry to hear that Sadie has been unwell. I'm not surprised that the allergy season has never really ended with the warm winter we've had. Sometimes that deep freeze is what our dogs, and even the wild animals require, to thrive. We humans prefer more tepid conditions.

Just from seeing the Super Bowl coverage, it is easy to see just how mild it is in your neck of the woods. I'm so glad you like the new Vet, and the Clinic itself! That is just as important as feeling comfortable with our Family Physician. Having a Vet who is also a dog owner/lover, as well as one dealing with the same or similar issues as yourself, is another huge plus. I am pleased that part has worked out too.

Most importantly, Sadie is now on the mend. I can only imagine how much her ears must have been bothering her. I'm sure as with any drug, after prolonged use, it often loses its efficacy so it makes sense to change it up. Since dairy can exacerbate allergies, the idea of a Marshmallow is a great one. I never would have thought of it. Do you use the Mini ones, or a full on "Jumbo"?

(Oliver doesn't have allergies so in a small piece of softer cheese, we bury his meds, and it's one gulp and gone! Henry also has a wee nibble at the same time so they both think it's a "treat" ...the lengths to which we go, and it's worth it!)

Big hugs to sweet Sadie, and I hope she feels better soon. It sounds like she's well on her way. :D
