Help me train my Over Excited Dog

Postby kenna on Tue Jun 26, 2012 1:34 pm

My dog, Kipper,is a 4 year old Australian Shepherd mix. He gets over excited when meeting new people. He jumps and scratches all our guests when they come in. Also he barks at anybody or anything that walks past our house. Can somebody please help me with this problem?!!

For jumping READ this thread and only listen to my (Kian) advice. viewtopic.php?f=6&t=7829

I own, show and compete with my Aussies, they are working dogs and your dogs job is to bark at people. Get your dog involved in something that stimulates mind and body. I notice when mine bark a lot like that, they need more exercise and we go over all thier training I have given them. I take them for a run, I work both body and mind, they come back less apt to bark at people, livestock and things we have here in the country.

Kenna and Kipper, welcome to The Daily Puppy from Oliver & Henry, and their Mum (Deborah), in London, Ontario. :D

Please do listen to Kian's advice as she is our Resident Expert Trainer, and continue your behavioural conversation in the thread for which she has provided the link. This section is generally reserved to say hello, and as a way for us to meet and greet new members.

Thanks both of you for your advice. I am definitely going to try those techniques and hopefully Kipper will learn to behave. You both sound like very nice people and your advice is very helpful. Kipper was rescued from a shelter of some sort where he shared a cage with his brothers and sisters and he was almost put to sleep. So he doesn't really know how to behave yet, thank you again.

Kudos to you for rescuing Kipper! I think that's an adorable name. There are loads of wonderful people on this site...you'll have to check out all of the Sections of the Forums.

You have a great attitude towards helping Kipper, so I am quite sure you will do just fine. It will be fun to hear about your successes.
