Warren and Charlie: New Bunnies!

Postby Phyrie on Fri Jun 29, 2012 5:37 pm

Hi folks, we got two new bunnies last week, and we are hoping to convince Kiba they are friends, not food. He gets so excited, especially when I touch them, with whining, barking and all kinds of vocalizations. He also strains to reach them through the cage wire, and we are working on keeping him calm around them. He's been doing pretty good, so we thought we'd bring the bunnies inside for a closer introduction, while Paul cleaned the cage.

I put barriers on each side of our tiny hall outside the bathroom. Kiba got quite excited, but I just kept telling him to calm down, and then basically ignored him while I sat with the bunnies. I opened the crate and let the bunnies come out or not as they pleased. I made sure the door stayed open so they could run back in whenever they felt the need. Charlie is the bravest, and was first out. Warren followed, but was much more tentative. Neither of them seemed bothered by Kiba, who kept forgetting himself, and would whine or bark to be let in. They were much more unsure of me, especially when I sat down on the carpet with them. They froze when I touched them, although they didn't try to run. Charlie let me pick him without any fighting or scratching, and he just lay in my hands, calm. Kiba, on the other hand, decided he didn't like that AT ALL, and started barking at me for holding him. Kiba is a jealous creature, and doesn't even like me touching Spyder, whom he's known all his life! He will jump down off Paul's lap to run over and chase her away from me, if she dares to jump onto my lap where he can see her! NOT because he wants me; he doesn't, and he just goes back to Paul after she jumps down and runs away from him. He just doesn't like to share.

Anyway, the bunnies were happier if I stood up, and they were soon both exploring the little area. It was so cute when Charlie found Kiba's toybox! He wasn't interested in the toys, but he had a good look, anyway. They had a little nosh on a baby carrot, but they weren't really interested. Charlie kept trying to dig up and eat the carpet, thinking it was grass. If we EVER get a day that isn't raining, we'll take them out and let them run in the grass a bit. Charlie also tried chewing on the board blocking off the kitchen, and on the door frame to the bathroom. Charlie is a chewer!

When Paul was done outside, he got a leash and collar on Kiba, and it was time for a face-to-face. Kiba had been sitting quietly beside the baby gate, and was even laying down at the end, just watching me with the bunnies. He was calm, so we thought we'd give it a go. The only other creature Kiba has met (other than dogs) is Spyder, and we all know how that went. *sigh* We are NOT experienced in introducing dogs to other animals, but we figured as long as we kept firm control on Kiba, and didn't allow him to become over-stimulated, the bunnies were safe.

It went better than I thought it would. Kiba was curious, but calm, and tried to sniff the bunnies like he would a dog! The bunnies couldn't care less about him, and just kept hopping around, exploring, and basically ignoring him! Brave buns!

After a few more minutes, Kiba got a little more excited, and made a quick move towards one, and I called the first meeting to a halt. I'm sure the bunnies had had enough, and I didn't want to push our luck. I got these pics, and a video of the event. Hope you enjoy!

I've been waiting and waiting and waiting for this and haven't said a word! I was there when Charlie and Warren first came home.

I'm so glad you took a video of Kiba, Paul, Warren and Charlie. Charlie is a brave little one, whereas Warren is far more quiet. Kiba is so funny...he wants them to play like a puppy. :D

Paul is always hilarious...."Glossettes" even!!! I see cohabitation as a strong possibility. 8) What a great idea to cordon off the hall even if it is carpeted, for their first indoor excursion.

Loved it, and it made me miss you more.

Bunnies!!!! :D Warren and Charlie are handsome boys.
They have identical coloring, although the markings are different, are they brothers?

Kiba did very well, for not ever meeting bunnies before...if only my dog/goat meetings went as well *sigh*

They are so sweet how fun!!
When we first got guinea pigs Daisy would sit and shake while I held her it took every ounce of self control not to jump on them. I think her natural instincts were to chase. One day we finally let her go and she just followed them, and began really liking them. She would follow them around and lick them it was so cute she would clean them like they were her babies. She would also try and heard them like sheep when it was time to put them away. Enjoy your new bunnies!!

Teeny, that is funny about Daisy and the Guinea Pigs!

The lovely thing about Cavaliers is they do not have a desirous bone in their body to kill anything! (Flies don't count!) Unlike most dogs, especially any of the "working breeds", Cavaliers are simply there for loving purposes. They just want to be friends with everyone and everything. :D 8)

Calling a Cavalier a "Spaniel" is almost an misnomer as it implies they might even be useful for something other than loving. Fortunately for those of us who enjoy the love of one, it isn't so.

Good natured bunnies! Slapped in the face by Kibas tail was hilarious and they didn't do anything. I thought Kiba did rather well, the buns are so cute.

Kian, I thought that too!!! They were so cute just sitting there being lightly grazed by Kiba's happy tail. :D

I found some pictures of Charlie and Warren from my trip, but I haven't uploaded them yet to this computer (or Photobucket). If they are decent, I may add them to your thread Phyrie, IF that's alright with you darling. 8)

Add away, Deb!

I don't know if they are brothers. I ASSume they are, as I got them from the same person. She was a student with THREE part time jobs, and just didn't have enough quality time to give the buns.

Teeny, I recognize that shake and tremble! Kiba is doing better, and can look into the bunny hutch without whining or woofing at them, which is a nice improvement. If they wouldn't MOVE, I'm sure he'd do SO much better! LOL! But, we continue to teach him, and remain hopeful they will all be buddies some day.

If only those Buns would hold still, Kiba would be fine!    8)

Phyrie, he was fine with them when it was just me out there, but the moment you showed up, he went into "that's my Mum" mode. He'll be fine with them in no time. :D

I still have to look at those pictures. I had a busy day today. :|
