My wife and I lost Kayle just a couple of days ago on the evening of the 3rd to a driver who was speeding through my in-laws rural town while she was crossing the street to meet a little boy; the driver never stopped.
We had Kayle almost literally from the moment she was born. My wife wanted a companion while I was away on my first deployment and a friend of ours just happened to have a litter of puppies. My wife got to be the first to pick a puppy and she was immediately drawn to the only puppy with white paws and black spots (the wife is a sucker for polka dots). She fell in love immediately. Kayle was my wife's friend for a full year and they went everywhere together. After coming home Kayle became my best friend and she never left my side when I was home and was always sitting, staring at the door waiting for me to come home.
To say the least, my wife and I are devastated by her loss, but our other Lab, Kegan, has taken her loss the worst. He has spent the past two days wondering the yard looking for her and after giving up simply lays at my wife's feet and sleeps the day away. I am away again now and I wish I could have been home to say goodbye one last time. I just don't understand why she had to be taken away from us so violently and at such a young age.
