Hi Deb,

I spoke to all three vets about gabapentin vs. lyrica. All three felt that Georgia was responding well even when these flare ups have hit. So far, her two BIG flare ups occurred around Christmas 2011 (when I found this board) and now. She's had mild flare ups but nothing like these two. I do keep a journal for the neurologist in case we need to make a change. All three vets were in agreement. I see the neurologist again in October and will ask again. I did ask the emergency neurologist two weeks ago and they had me increase the gabapentin not change the medication yet. I think if she had more chronic flares without long periods of stability it would be more of an issue in their minds. Plus, her allergies really contributed to this big flare up so the antihistamine is also helping a lot. A lot less face rubbing and scratching/biting.

Personally, I hate gabapentin b/c of how it negatively affected me when I took the medication but most of Georgia's pain is from her hips and legs now. That is the medication that I'm working on right now :( She is still have a really good day. Only one episode of head rubbing when she got excited. She gets so excited when the nurses come to visit....she swears they are here for her! hahaha. I'll have to post the photo of how she sits waiting for the nurses to pet her. She knows not to interrupt my mom now....it will make you laugh. I don't know how it is comfortable but she sits like this the entire time.

Also, JACKNYC....thank you so much for the kind words. My mom is really improving. Tomorrow will be the last of her IV antibiotic infusions. I can actually sleep through the night without having to administer one! Not that I'm complaining....I'd do anything for her...but I should be able to leave soon and return to my home. I'm hoping in the next two weeks.

Kelly

OMG Kelly, Georgia looks absolutely adorable in that picture. I can't get over how cute she is!!!
I am so happy to hear your mom will be finishing up her antibiotics soon. I am the same way with my mom- I would do anything and everything for her.
I am glad the antihistamines seem to be helping Georgia . I can't imagine dealing w the SM symptoms and allergies, poor girl.

Deb I have heard that Lyrica will be available in the generic form starting this fall/ winter here in the states. so far Jack is stable on the gabapentin ( I hope I didn't just jinx myself) however I know we will eventually need something stronger and Lyrica will be the way to go. I want to avoid any long term use of steriods.

oh by the way I just got my saliva kit from that study in the mail today. Its two little brushes you rub inside each chek. I've put it in the mail already. I do hope those of you outside the US get your kits soon.

best, Irene aka Jack's mom:)

Kelly, that photo of Georgia actually made me laugh out loud!!! She is a cutie, and so full of Cavalier personality. I also love her "mop top". (Henry's is similar, but Georgia's is so much more. :D ).

I must admit that I forgot about Georgia's allergies which would of course contribute to the itching, and scratching. I feel so helpless sometimes, as it breaks my heart what our little friends have to endure. Georgia looks very happy in that photo, and comfortable, although it might not be a position you or I would enjoy for prolonged periods of time. How sweet that she thinks the nurses are coming to see her. That's lovely.

What wonderful news about your Mum. Of course you would do anything to help, but I'm sure a whole night's sleep will make you feel like a new person in a couple of days, after you have two or three in a row. You must also be looking forward to returning home. Thank goodness your Mum is on the mend. You are a wonderful daughter!

Irene, I'm glad you received your DNA kit. I haven't received mine yet, but that doesn't mean anything. The mail in Canada is generally very slow, but for some reason, my new(er) neighbourhood seems to have the SLOWEST mail delivery in the Province! Honestly, people don't believe me sometimes when I tell them..."nope, not here yet"! I've resorted to receiving as many of my bills and important mail, as possible, via email as I would often receive things either on or past their due date.

When my Mum is in Florida during the winter, she will put a birthday card in the mail for one of us here no less than 2 weeks in advance, and it often doesn't arrive on time. Outgoing mail seems to move much faster probably because it leaves Canada immediately!

I'm glad you are participating in the Study, and hope that we can all participate. Wouldn't it be wonderful if an identifying gene was found, and a blood test developed (which could be performed on all pups at their first Vet check, or sooner) so that these dogs are NEVER bred, hopefully eradicating these diseases altogether?!

I buy "Dogs In Canada Breeders' Guide" every year (although this year is the last for print publication) and I'm still surprised that in the description of Cavaliers, they mention heart issues, but nothing about SM/CM. I guess more people use the Internet now days for information, but it's like the Breeders' and the Kennel Clubs want to keep this a secret instead of informing the public. :|

Thanks for the updates!

Thanks Margie! You have always been a wonderful supporter to those of us with dogs that aren't 100%, health wise. It is greatly appreciated. :D

Shirley, you have also been a tremendous source of kindness, and thoughtfulness. ♥

Speaking for myself, there are times when my dog is having a "bad patch" and one can feel very alone in it, especially in the wee hours of the morning. I find it very comforting to know that when I have a chance, I can come here and share it, and I'm not alone.

Thank you!

Hi Everyone,

Just a quick update on Georgia. She had an eye infection so another trip to the vet :( Two days later and her eyes are clear! My poor girl...it's always something!!

On a positive note, I'm heading home tomorrow. My mother is doing very well and can take care of things on her own now. She still has nurses coming in twice a day but she is driving and showering all on her own. Still has a long road until completely well, but she's off to a good start. It's been a long and crazy summer.

Another positive....we've had some really HOT weather in Pennsylvania. One day, I felt it was too hot to take Georgia on a walk (and her hip was giving her discomfort). I took her into my Aunt's fenced in yard to walk around and I always take a ball to throw to get her to move around. Georgia was quite the fetcher when she was well. Lately, she just walks towards the ball then keeps on going. On this day, she actually FETCHED. The first time in over a year!!! I cried and took photos and video to document!! Too bad I can't post video here ;) Georgie is so happy that her Grammy is more active with her...she follows her around and barks at her constantly to pay attention to her. I'm sure she will go on a hunger strike and drive me crazy when we get home....that always happens when we leave my parents house.

I also painted a picture of Georgia (a cartoon version) for a fund raiser. After they display it, I'll post it for you all to see.

I hope I received the swab kit at home. I'll send it in soon. I hope everyone is doing well!

Kelly what wonderful news about your mom!!!
I am also happy to gear Georgia had a nice time playing ball. I can just picture her running around feeling so happy.

Definitely would love to see the cartoon painting when you are able to post it.
take care ,

Kelly, I so enjoyed your entire post! I do love hearing about sweet Georgia, and all her "moods". She is a lovely, funny, girl. I can't wait to see the video and pictures of her actually playing fetch for the first time in a year. I would have had tears of joy as well if I were in your shoes. ♥

You have certainly had a long and trying summer. I think it's so sweet how much Georgia loves your Mum. Georgia will probably protest the change of going home, but I'm sure will settle back into things easily and quickly. Poor girl with the eye infection....dear oh dear! I'm glad that has cleared up nicely. :)

I too am looking forward to seeing your artwork of Georgia. I still need to check and see if the DNA kit has arrived. It hadn't at last check.

The best news of all is your Mum's recovery. For you, I'm sure it's comforting to know that the nurses will still be coming by so someone will be checking on her frequently and there to give a hand if needed. She has made an excellent recovery, and the fact that she is now bathing and able to drive is a milestone and a good indication that she is well on her way.

You are a terrific daughter!

Thanks for the update. It's wonderful to hear the happy news. :D

Irene, how is Jack managing with this extremely hot summer?

I'm so pleasantly surprised at how well Oliver is doing. He was actually playing like a puppy over the past couple of days. We've had a bit of a change in our household as well. I am quite "single" after 11 years, by my choice. Fortunately Oliver and Henry seem to be rolling with it rather well, which is a load off. Normally Oliver would pine terribly if his "Dad" left the house even for a few hours. Oliver seemed more concerned with my whereabouts after my trip out west in June, so when the change started to occur in early July, Oliver was just happy that I returned. Henry also frets when all of his "humans" aren't at home, but he too seems to be fine with it.

Many items still have to be removed from my home, mostly clothing and stuff in the garage (that has been there for 10 years). I'm going to be purchasing a new bed soon, and going from a King back to a Queen. By doing this, I'll have room for "steps" for Oliver without me tripping over them. It's been an interesting year.

I also recently had a birthday, and an impromptu Birthday party at my house, that wasn't planned at all. One of my friends brought over his JRT, "Little Man" whom Henry adores so the two of them played for hours. Oliver wanted none of their shenanigans, but the house was SO happy, loud and full of merriment. We're all older now, so the whole event was over by midnight but my sons, my dogs and me all had a wonderful time. 8)

Deb
I actually received two of the saliva kits. I sure do hope they get them out to those not in the states and not send those of us here doubles!

It has been a tough summer for Jack, on the really hot humid days, he turns into an old man just walking around the block. Some days I limit it to half a block because he just looks too tired and pants too much. Jack always seems to do better in the cooler weather so hopefully things will look better when the season changes. We go for his annual neuro visit in two weeks. I am hoping no big changes are noted on clinical exam (fingers crossed).

I think Henry and Oliver are probably more in tune with how happy their mom is and that is why the change has not been as hard on them as one might think. You sound wonderful and I am glad this is a positive move in your life.
By the way, Happy Birthday! :D

Kelly- how are things? I hope all is continuing on a positive note.

Irene, do let us know how Jack makes out at his appointment. I have kept Oliver in on the very hot days, except to do his business. It is just too hot this summer. I know Jack will feel better as the Fall approaches and the temperatures start to drop, as well as the oppressive humidity. :)

You aren't the first person to mention how much "happier" I am, and how it positively affects my sons and my dogs. Even though my sons have had a few more verbal disagreements of late than normal, they are also laughing more, talking more and seeking each other out more. They also feel freer to have said arguments and clear the air.

Both dogs sleep with me now, all the time, except occasionally Henry feels the need to share the love and he'll seek out one of his brothers for the night. He's quite funny about it. Oliver is never far from my side.

I hope my kit arrives soon, and thanks for the Birthday wishes.

Hi All!

Georgia, Lola and I returned home today. I had a rheumatoid arthritis/fibromyalgia flare up on Friday that knocked me for a loop, so I delayed our return. Georgia and Lola seemed very happy to be home. Both returning to their regular routines almost immediately. Georgia was outside and barking like a maniac....I think she was letting all her dog friends know that she was home!!! :D Then she went to the neighbor's house and barked for Darla to come outside. They weren't home. It was quite funny.

Deb, best of luck with your new situation! It's never easy but sometimes it is absolutely right. I wish you, Oliver, Henry and your boys lots of happiness on your new journey!

Irene, Georgia has been struggling with the heat, too. Now that her flare has passed, she is stronger with the walks but I am limiting her greatly. I did buy her an ice collar and that seems to keep her cool with walks. I noticed at my family's house, she never wanted to be outside. I had to drag her out each night to go to the bathroom. We returned home and she was scratching at the door multiple times. My parents live near the Pocono Mountains and I live near Philly. Could it be Georgia is more of a city girl?? More likely, she didn't want to miss out on any food that my dad might drop ...hahaha I'm just thrilled she is happy to be home.

Lola (my cat) is happy too....I have another cat, Isabella who was a feline terrorist ;) She constantly stalked and/or attacked Georgia and Lola when she lived with us. She ended up hiding at my parents' house one Christmas when it was time to come home. I left her there "temporarily" and now she is queen of their house. My beautiful Isabella is meant to be an only child :)

Kelly, Gerogia is just so sweet! I know she loves Darla. :D

I'm glad you delayed your trip, and didn't realize or remember that you suffer from Fibromyalgia. I have a friend with that, and I know how difficult it can be. You were smart to wait until you felt better, especially since you had a 2 hour drive.

How fortunate for Isabella to be an "only child" once again. It sounds like a win/win for everybody. I also think it's wonderful that Georgia is right back in the swing of things. Perhaps she is a City girl at heart.

Thanks for your kind wishes angel. This was the right decision for all of us, and while it is change AGAIN, it was time after 11 years to acknowledge that things just weren't working for any of us. We are all much happier lately. :D

I'm sure you'll be happy to sleep in your own bed tonight and be in your home. Your parents will miss having you around, I'm sure but you aren't so far away that you can't visit fairly frequently. I've always wanted to visit the Poconos. It is beautiful there from what I've seen. 8)
