People always forget that it is COOKED bones that are the issue!!! Raw bones are fine.

Good point Tracy about the grapes!!! Most people forget that one as well.

How about antlers? I see them for sale online a lot, but are they safe for dogs?

Antlers seem okay, think common sense and get an antler size appropriate for your dogs mouth. Elk antlers might be better for big dogs than deer antlers because they're thicker all around so they're less likely to be swallowed.

Teddy LOVES the antlers we have left over from the elk ranch, I think there is a certain smell he loves over synthetic toys. He particularily likes the stubs that get shed after the big pointed part is removed for show or velvet removal(Thats the soft fuzzy stuff that grows on antlers before it gets shed for the winter). I'm not sure if the velvet is safe for dogs, but I know we sold it to humans in little capsuls as supliments. Besides the ones at the store are not sold with velvet on them, so you should be fine.

Let us not forget artificial sweetners and grapes to be added to this list of no-nos for your pet. These are highly toxic.

Antlers are great. Here whitetail deer are the common prey and I don't think their antlers can be broken without a hammer and anvil. I still have a good collection from cousins, brother and father. Dad and I used to use them in inlays and jewelry. I've had Labs who could crack open and destroy an entire cow hip bone, but couldn't crack antlers. They eventually grind them down, which is what happens to them when shed in the wild. Not dogs, of course, but possums, porcupines, mice, foxes, skunks, raccoons--it gives them a source of calcium all winter.

Cow bones really depend on your dog, if you have a beast who can crunch through anything (like our Chessies) they can cause issues... oh boy can they. We had to take our poor guy to the vet last year because he got over enthusiastic devoured the bone (a chunk of cow femur with the hip ball) and ended up with digestive system obstructions. Throw that on top of the pancreatitis our delicate little girly Chessie had a little later in the year and needless to say the babies no longer get anything other than their food, the occasional dog cookie (from the doggie bakery not to far away) and baby carrots as their before bed treat...
