Help with mix breed

Postby milo21 on Mon Dec 03, 2012 11:50 pm

I'm looking to adopt a new dog from a rescue shelter. He is still a puppy and they are not sure what kind of breed he is. The lady who running the adoption believes it to be a chow mix. Can anyone help by looking at these pictures? What breed and maybe what I should expect from the dog when it is older?

I forgot to add he also has a pink tongue where most chows have a darker pink/purple tongue.

He could be any number of mixes, including Rottweiler, GSD, or Chow. Just because a dog may have some Chow in it, does not mean that their tongue will be blue. There is another breed that also has a blue tongue, but I can't for the life of me think of it right now.

One also can't predict personality by looking at those adorable pictures. Even if the Breed Mix was known, it still would not necessarily be a predictor of character, as who's to say which Breed impacted the personality the most.

He's an awfully cute little fellow. :D

I run a small dog rescue in NC and see this look of dog all the time. I saved a brother and sister who were identical to your pictures. They were Lab/Shepherd mixes and a lady adopted them together and they are her best buddies and wonderful dogs. Mars has a mixed breed DNA test kit you can buy online if you are interested and it's cheaper on Amazon. The pup will be a wonderful companion and it's always a good idea to take them to Petsmart or somewhere to start training them early in life. One more thing my groomer said there are over 50 breeds that can have purple on their tongue. My AKC black lab does. I hope you adopt the pup and use high quality dog food which will increase his chances for a long life. :-)

He is cute! Puppies change quite a bit during thier first year and many times you have no idea until the pup is older. I see no Chow however. DNA tests are not perfected and not always accurate. If you like the puppy, get him and see how he grows and changes. Chances are he is not a purebreed and remember mixes don't mean each of his parents were purebred, he could have several breeds in him.
